How to synchronize itunes with the hard-drive's directories ?

Hi everyone,
I'm new at iTunes and iPod.
I'm used to put all my mp3 files in the same folder. I add every weeks some new mp3 files.
How to tell to iTunes to synchronize and get the new files in the music folder ?
In the same way, i try to refresh the ide3 tags from my mp3 files.
I use Tag&Rename software. But it seems that itunes doesn't xant to see the ide3 tags modifications ?
How to tell him to refresh in its own library the newly updated tags ?
thx for your answers

I got the same problem. The only thing which worked for me was moving with my files too, onto the harddisk.
Start/MyDocuments/rightklick on it/ change the location to your external HD and hit enter.

If your CDs are on your iPod/iPhone, they can be recovered from there, see this post:

Your problem shows the importance of making backups.

How can I completely wipe the hard drive with out the Mac OS X disc? I don't need any of the info on the computer.

You can't unless you have a bootable system on an external drive you can use. Otherwise, you need either the original disc that came with your computer or a retail copy of Snow Leopard DVD. The latter contains 10.6.3, so your model must be capable of booting from that or an earlier version of OS X.
You can purchase replacement discs from Apple:
Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 or visit online Help for more information.
To contact product and tech support: Apple - Support - Contact Apple Support.
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.

  • I was given an iBook G4 with the hard drive erased. Is there a free reformat/reboot download available?

I was given an iBook g4 with the hard drive erased. A local Mac tech stated the unit could be reformatted online.  I've not been able to find anything to help. Is there a downloadable program?

You should be able to gain a clue if the sticker with the serial number on it remains intact.
Check out the Apple Knowledge Base article on How to find the Serial Number for that information.
Is there any other path to pursue other than paying bucks to have a local Mac Tech restore it?
Yes, but you will need the Install and Restore discs.
Can another Mac cink with it to retrieve this data?
There is no data to "retrieve," since the hard drive has been erased. What you need is an installation and restoration of the operating system and original applications. This is accomplished with either a compatible full retail install disc (or discs) or the original Install and Restore discs. We are right back to needing to know which exact model it is in order to advise you further.

  • How can my daughter use the hard drive in the Time Capsule ...

So, I am in Oklahoma and my daughter is in Tennessee...
She has a Time Capsule where the Wi-fi base station quit working, but the hard drive may be OK.
She bought an Airport Express to use as a wi-fi router.
    The question, then, is:
How can my daughter use the hard drive in the Time Capsule to do Time Machine backups?
Thank you very much for your insights.
    Roberto

It can be done but is very messy. That is assuming the TC is still functional which I kind of doubt.. the wifi is seldom the only thing that will die .. so whatever problems it has the wifi would be the least of it.
Anyway.. do a factory reset to get started.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
If the LED is not lit then the TC is dead, not just the wireless.
The setup for using the TC is explained in the bottom of this thread.
TC in a second local network.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4817218?tstart=30
The idea is to set the TC to provide router function.. and the computer plugged in by ethernet to as a second network.. but there are rules on how this is done which I have explained in that thread.
I notice that Mountain Lion deals better with order of network priority than Snow Leopard used to .. so it might not need to have manually set gateway and dns.. although I would still recommend it. It simply stops the second network causing issues.
It is much easier to simply purchase an external drive and plug that in.
It is cheaper, faster and more reliable than using the TC for TM anyway.
Plus a lot of the later machines no longer have ethernet ports.. and using dongles is far from neat.. although thunderbolt to ethernet is IMHO necessary accessory for anyone without ethernet.

  • How does the 1st gen appletv with the hard drive work?

I want to know what the hard drive records and stores. Poscasts? Purchased media? Rented media? Your itunes media? Ripped DVD's?
What does the hard drive hold media wise?
Does the 1st gen have the same features as the 2nd, netflix, poscasts, PC media streaming?

Does the 1st gen directly access podcasts without going thru itunes? Like the 2nd gen can do. Can the drive store podcasts?

  • How to use Mac with 2 hard drives?

I have a MacBook Pro that I have been using with one hard drive for 2 years. I am about to install a second hard drive inside of the computer, and I would like to know how use my laptop with these 2 hard drives. The drives I will use will be...
    60 GB SSD (primary)
    OS
    Applications
    750 GB HDD (secondary)
    iTunes library
    Docs, pictures, music, movies, misc.
    Everything else
Is this possible? Do I need to simply drag and drop the folders onto the hard drive that I want them in?
    Thanks.

  • What is going on with the Hard drives?

I purchased my macbook in Feb 2007. I've had two 160GB macbook hard drives corrupted (beyond any data retrieval) since then (and in the last year). I lost a great deal of PhD Thesis the first time.
Both times i had the screen freeze (unrelated to power since both were fully charged) and when I rebooted the HD could not be accessed. Seems to be corrupting the category B-tree in the catalogue. I have no idea what this means except i have no love for the B-tree. Off to mac repairers. Apple will not replace your HD without the old one which does create dramas when your old one is at data recovery.
I've learnt my external hard drive lesson (but always remember to back up your iTunes and iPhotos) since then but what's a reasonable expectation for your macbook to corrupt it's hard drive? Each HD took exactly 8 months to corrupt. coincidence? unlikely.
I have extra applecare protection cover but apple seem to think it's reasonable to replace the hard drive again and won't replace the macbook. I'm don't think that living in fear for the next 8 months is an appropriate resolution?
Is there an issue with macbook hardware that explains the HD corruption epidemic?

There have been some reports of a couple of runs of bad drives from the drive manufacturers, most reports being of Seagate drives, but I've seen nothing confirmed by any of the manufacturers. But all laptop manufacturers get their drives from the same vendors, so any vendor is equally likely to have a problem in such a circumstance. It's possible that your replacement drive was of the same series and so had the same problem, if such a problem really does exists. But laptop drives, being of very tiny parts, are more susceptible to failure; they're just not as robust as desktop drives, and of course are subject to more shock from travel. In my experience, support hundreds of laptops from various vendors, MacBooks are no more prone to hard drive failure than are any other manufacturer's system. So it could well have just been bad luck (presuming that the problem was indeed a hardware failure).
As to replacement, it's quite reasonable for Apple to just replace the hard drive again in the case of another failure, as there is really nothing in such a circumstance that would make replacing the entire MacBook help the situation.
Sorry you've had bad luck. I hope that your system behaves well from now on.
    Regards.

  • Using Itunes with multiple hard drives

I'm a new mac user and have a 250GB external hard drive with two FAT partitions. They appear as two individual drives to my MAC. Each partition has a lot of music. Its more that one of the partitions can hold. I can access and play songs in itunes by accesing them through the file system on the hard drives.
I saw the option to point itunes to an external hard drive in the advanced general preferences tab, but it seems to have a limitation of one location/folder. I can't seem to find a way to make itunes aware of multiple folders which could exist on multiple disk. I'm using Itunes 7.02, on MAC 10.4.8. Is there a way to do this, or is it a limitaiton of itunes?
    Joe

    Jeveland,
    Welcome to Discussions,
Although iTunes only has one 'iTunes Music folder location', the music can be stored at any location and added to the library.
The 'iTunes Music folder location' is the location where iTunes stores ripped CDs and purchased music. It does not tell iTunes where your music is stored.
The locations of your songs are stored in the 'iTunes Library' file.
Read more about the library files here.
Uncheck 'Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to the library' in Preferences>Advanced>General. Then add your music to the library.
    Hope this helps.

  • Is there a 'how-to' anywhere about upgrading the hard drive?

    Hi Guys,
I'd quite like to upgrade the hard drive in my 24 inch 3.06GHz iMac to 2TB. Is there a step-by-step 'how to' available anywhere or has anyone done it successfully?
I've done laptops on many occasions but the iMac has a difficult looking case to crack!
    Thanks
    Rich

    Hi mate,
Haha, no I have no preconceptions about firewire! My iMac has a 400 and an 800. The 800 is connected to a Sony DV video deck and the 400 is connected to a RAID drive that is then daisy-chained to another external firewire and a Wiebetech bare hard drive device that I just swap out various hard drives to for clients.
I suppose I should really be looking at a tower, but I sold a G5 Quad to downsize to the smaller footprint iMac and have been happy with it's performance - but the new ones have more space and more RAM capability - it's just a shame they don't have the connectivity options of even this iMac.
    Cheers
    Rich

  • How to install lion cleaning the hard drive

I have a MacBook I am currently running Liuon but have previously installed Leopard and Snow Leopard without clearing the hard drive first.
The machine has now three operating systems installed and is running very slow.
It has been suggested that I make a copy of the hard drive, before erasing all the information and loading Lion on a clean hard drive.
    How do i do this?

Install Lion to a blank drive or partition, including one created with the Disk Utility, and then either use the Migration Assistant or copy your files to the new system manually as desired.

  • How to recover data from the hard drive?

I've always heard that data is never really gone from the hard drive even after you delete it. How do I recover that data? My problem is some photos (my honeymoon photos) have been deleted from my computer and they have also been deleted from the recycle bin. I sure would like to recover them.

First stop using your system, then get a copy of a program that will recover files like Data Rescue 3.  If you have a time machine backup you may be able to restore them.

  • What can I do with the hard drive from my broken iPod Mini?

    Hello all,
A friend of mine has an iPod Mini that is broken beyond repair. However, the battery and the hard drive works fine. The question is, is there a way to utilize the hard drive as an external USB drive? If so, can anyone point me in a resource that outlines this? I have checked online but haven't had any luck.
    Thanks so much,
    Ed

Yeah, but I may have not descriped the issue with the iPod. He tried to replace the battery himself and broke the ribbon cable that connects the circuit board to the control wheel. The battery and HD are o.k. so I mentioned that he may be able to take the HD out and use it as a separate storage device. I thought they drives that had the same form factor as a compact flash card.
I told him to pay the 50 bucks to have Apple replace the battery but did he listen? I know it sounds like I have an imaginary friend and I did it, but really it was he that tried it on his own. <ggg>
