How to tell apart a 5th generation to a 5th late 2006 model (5.5) ?

Hi, I will be checking out a used iPod 30gb 5th generation model in order to possibly purchase it tomorrow. Though I've never extensively used an iPod. How can I tell if it's a late 2006 5th generation or not ? What should I look at to find out ?
Francis.

Is it possible to install a 160 GB Toshiba slim-fit HDD from an iPod Classic 2009 model into a iPod 5th Gen Late-2006 model that originally had a 30 GB Toshiba drive?
I have had my 30 GB iPod video for about 7 years, it was a gift and has served me well. Unfortunately it was in my pocket when I brushed up against a very powerful magnet which latched onto the unit and scrambled the hardware. Sad iPod icon.
I was told I probably need to replace the HD in order to get it back to working order. What I am wondering is, would I be able to replace it with a larger capacity drive so long as I got a unit that was slim enough to fit into the casing?

Have you tried resetting the PRAM? http://gigaom.com/2011/07/26/when-to-reset-your-macs-pram-and-smc/
Which Windows version are you trying to install? If I remember right, you can't use windows 8 on these older machines.
Other than that it's hard to say what could have gone wrong. I can only suggest going through the steps again carefully and making sure everything worked the way it should.
Have a look at this article too for a slighly more verbose instruction on making a drive bootable: http://www.instructables.com/id/Install-Windows-7-without-USB-or-DVD-without-upg ra/

  • How to tell apart

My Daughter recently egave me her ipod shuffle for the gym. The problem is she has no idea where the charger is and I am going to order one to sync it with my itunes. I need to figure out what generation it is. It's not rectangular at all, it is square and pink with a white circle dial. It has abolutley nothing pronted on it. Anyone want to help me out here???

    Hello RawkAngel,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
Take a look at this article named Identifying iPod models found here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353.
It lists all the iPods we've made, from newest at the top, to oldest at the bottom. It should help you identify the iPod Generation you have there.
Also if the product is registered to you or your daughter, you can log into https://supportprofile.apple.com, and it will tell you there what generation it is.
If its not registered, you could register it to get that info.
    All the best,

  • HT5639 how to install bootcamp on windows 7 64 bit on late 2006 imac

I ma trying to get Windows 2007 ultimate to install boot camp on my late 2006 24"CTO iMac. I am able to install the OS but when it come to install bootcamp it tells me that 64 bit is not supported on this machine. I need to be able to install it so all drivers get installed and the boot selector gets installed.
The machine I know is not true 64 bit and I wish it was a cheap way to make it 64 bit but I can't afford a new Mac at this time.
    The specs are:
    2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo
    4 GB Ram
    1 TB HD
    256 MB Nvidia 7600GT

  • How to tell apart ready:form-event and ready:layout-event

    Hi,
I would like to call the same function in a script object from different events.
As I cannot make layout changes in the ready:layout event I would like to find out in the function: Which event called me?
event.name gives me the event name nicely for most events. (Although the returned strings are somewhat peculiar....)
But: The ready:layout-event as well as the ready:form-event both give me "Open".
Therefore I would like to know:
How can a function tell whether it was called from ready:layout or from ready:form?
I suppose there is a much simpler solution, than trying "event.name".
    Ulrich

    Hi Ulrich,
Check out event.activity in LC Designer help. This gives a closer description of the event fired, eg 'docReady' instead of 'open'.
    Good luck,
    Niall

  • How much RAM can I put in my Macbook Pro (late 2006), and how much will it cost me?

I am currently running at a:
2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM in Memory
ATI Radeon X1600 256 MB in Graphics
Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) in Software
& it's a 15inch Macbook Pro incapable of upgrading to Mountain Lion.
I know i have a lot of limitations due to the age of this mac, but I would like
to know as to how far I can go with the one that I have. Please help.

Your MBP will be able to use a maximum of 3 Gb RAM.  The exact specifications are: 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM.  Best sources are Crucial and OWC.  Their websites will have the prices.
Snow Leopard is an excellent OS.  I have it on my 2010 MBP and have no intention of installing Lion/Mt Lion.  It is stable and efficient, more so than the newer ones.  Do not view that as a handicap.
You might also consider installing a larger HDD.  Your MBP can handle the largest ones available to day (1 Tb).  For a pre-unibody MBP, it is a bit harder than the current crop but achievable of you have rudimentary mechanical skills and a bit of patience.  See the OWC website for excellent how to do it videos.
    Ciao.

  • How to choose an external harddrive for booting an iMac G5 (Intel Core 2 Duo, late 2006 model MA589xx/A)

The internal harddrive of my 20" iMac G5 has failed and I would like to run the computer from an external drive until I can purchase a new one. I don't currently have an external drive available to do this so I would like some recommendations regarding which type would be preferable for this use. My neighbor suggested buying an external firewire enclosure and a 500 GB drive to go inside it. Is that adequate? If so, which brand is good to buy. In the future I will be using this new drive to backup files from whatever computer I end up purchasing. I am also considering replacing the internal drive of the iMac since the rest of the computer works well and, if possible, would like to use this new drive for that purpose.

I agree with your neighbor. A good source is OWC. You want a 3.5" SATA I or SATA II (1.5 or 3.0 Gb/s) hard drive. The enclosure should have a power supply and support at least Firewire 400/800 and USB 2.0. OWC even has tools. Good drives to choose from include Seagate, HGST, and Western Digital (stay away from their Blue drives.) Avoid so-called Green drives.

  • USB cable compatibility between Classic and 5th Generation

Does anyone know if the Classic and 5th generation can use the same USB cable and charge either one successfully. Or, asked another way, can the Classic use the same portable charger as the 5th Generation?

A 5th gen iPod is not a Classic. See this link for assistance in identifying your iPod:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353
If what you have is truly a 5th gen, you should start a new thread with an appropriately descriptive title in the 5th gen iPod section:

    Best of luck.

  • How do I tell if my Ipod is 5th generation?

I have an ipod, that I have had for 2 years. I have just spent £275 getting a Parrott car kit and ipod blue tooth installed in my car. After installing it, the ipod software isn't supported and according to Parrott, they only work with 5th generation and up. I dont know what generation mine is and I can't seem to find out either.
    Can anyone help!!

    Hey there,
The fifth generation iPod only came in the sizes of 30 GB, 60 GB, or 80 GB. There are other things you can check to verify the model and generation of your iPod with the Apple document below. Hope this helps.

Whenever I go to iTunes with my iPod 5th generation 32 gb iPod Touch, running iOS 8.0.2, It tells me that the "Other" category is using up 14.59 gb of data. I have no clue why it says this and I have searched the internet for fixes and none worked. I have tried on a windows and a mac and noticed no change. I have tried restoring to a backup but that didn't help. I haven't had time to do a full restore but I will try if the problem persists.

An "other" larger than about 1 1/2 GB indicates corrupted files.

Next, usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.

  • HT1212 Up to how long will my iPod touch 5th generation be disabled with ios7? The screen doesn't say anymore...

I can't remeber my iPod touch 5th generation's pass code. I know the four numbers included, just not the sequence. It disabled yesterday at 6pm, and it's now 11am and still disabled. Also, when I first got my iPod, my friend synced it with her iTunes, so I can't plug it into mine.
I have a lot of pictures and songs that I really don't want to lose, by just restoring it, if I can even do that.
    So, my question is either,
    1. Up to how many hours can my iPod be disabled for? (The new iOS won't tell us!) And how long will it disabled after each try??
    2. Is there any way to get the pass code off my iPod touch without losing all my apps, music, pictures, ect.?
    Thank you!!

If it says "iPad is disabled" it is never going to time out.  At that point, your only option is to restore it in iTunes.
If you have a backup in place now (in iCloud or iTunes) once restored, you can restore from backup, but the only way to un-disable the device is to restore it.

  • I have my ipod nano 5th generation and when i plugged it to my computer it is recognized but i cant do anything. On the ipod all i can see is a black screen with the apple sign! How can i fix this?

I have my ipod nano 5th generation and when i plugged to my computer it is recognized but i cant do anything. On the ipod all i can see is a blackscreen with the apple sign! How can i fix this?

    Howdy Lumagofe,
I was thinking that you may need to reset the iPod Nano, outlined here How to reset iPod http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1320.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and Volume Down button simultaneously for at least eight seconds or until the Apple logo appears. You may need to repeat this step.
If the above step did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep. Try resetting the iPod while it is connected to power.
If that doesn't quite get the iPod going again, then it will need to be restored. Use this article to help with that Restoring iPod to factory settings http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1339.

  • How can I sync a tv show without having to sync the whole library from a different computer?(For 5th generation ipod)

So I have a 5th generation nano, and I want to put a tv show on it from my friends computer. (I'm able to put songs on my ipod) But everytime I drag it to my library it says: it was not copied because you are not autorized on this computer.
so when i try to do it manually it says I can do it but i have to erase everything I have and sync whats on her computer to my ipod. How can I just get this **** tv show onto my ipod??? is there a way?

Is this a TV show you purchased with your own iTunes account or your friend iTunes store account?  If it was your own account, simply authorize your purchased content on your friend's computer.  To do this, head to the Store drop down menu in iTunes and choose Authorize This Computer.  Then enter in your iTunes store credentials and then try resyncing the TV Show to your iPod.
