How to tell between SATA2 and SATA3 hard drives?

Hello all.
Googled my little fingers off and couldn't find a clear answer to this ...
How (the heck) do you find out if a hard drive is SATA3 or SATA2 and/or how do you find out if a hard driveis 6Gb/s or 3Gb/s?
The situation: WIth the price coming down on SSD drives, I finally caved and bought an SSD to upgrade my 2011 Macbook Pro.  First up, wow ... I realize this SSD drive is brand new and performing at it's best but holy doodle!  It's so fast it feels like a whole new computer. Great upgrade, well worth the money.
Anyways, my plan was to install the SSD as the primary drive and run the OS and applications off it.  Then take old main HD (a 1TB, 72000rpm HD) and rotate that into the optical bay (for file storage).  I am using the OWC data-doubler kit and that's where the problems started.  The data doubler rack is fine but apparently I can't put a SATA3 (?) drive in the optical bay ...  only SATA2 drives. Something about the optical bay not being able to handle 6Gb/s and only 3Gb/s.
I might have an out here.  I have three other 2.5" HDs in external USB enclosures (Western Digital My Passport, Freecom etc.) that if I can successfully identify as SATA2 and/or 3Gb/s then I will break open and use that in the optical bay.  Before breaking the enclusore open, I would ideally like to positively identify the drive as having the proper specs.  These enclosures don't appear to be designed to be opened and closed again so it might be a one way mission if I break them open ;-)
I plugged in the drives and tried System Information and wasn't able to spot anything (maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention)
If anyone can tell me if it's possible to plug these USB drives and indentify them as SATA2 / SATA3 or 6Gb/s / 3Gb/s that would be awesome.
Tnx!

Yeah it does, it tells me its one of those OLD HD that was made with the "lets save 2 cents and make it all one piece" philosophical designs.

iPhoto doesn't scan anywhere. It imports files offered to it. If it spots a duplicate it will warn you.

  • Conflict between iPod and external hard drive

I just got a 250GB external hard drive made by SimpleTech so that I could store all my music and video off my computer hard drive. However, when it's running, it disconnects my iPod and won't let me transfer files to it through iTunes. Seeing as how I want to sync all the files on my external with my iPod, this kind of defeats the whole purpose of the external. It doesn't matter what USB port I try it in, every time Is tart it up, it stops my iPod from communicating. Anyone have any ideas what this is about or how to fix it?

Try changing the drive letter of either the ext hd or your iPod.
Click on control panel/admin tools/computer management/disk management/right click on the iPod to re-assign the drive letter.
Choose something lower down the alphabet, say 'M' or something similar.
The iPod can be confused by any other storage devices assigned a similar drive letter even though they may not connected at the same time.

  • Is there a big difference between 5400 and 7200 hard drives?

I dont know which one to get. Should i upgrade to the 7200. Right now i have a 7200 hard drive in my powermac g5 and its great so would it be alot slower with a 5400 hard drive. Also to upgrade the drive do i have to order it online or can they upgrade it in the apple store?

Barefeats did some tests, and they conclude the Momentus 7200 is worth the upgrade. Also note this drive is slower than some other newer drives, so you could even get a greater advantage from other models. I've bolded pertinent information. Please note most performance increases are not seen in everyday emailing, web surfing, etc.
    http://www.barefeats.com/hard56.html
    Their Conclusion:
    ANALYSIS
The Seagate Momentus 7200.1 takes notebook drive speed to a whole new level. It's not as fast as the fastest 2.5" (ed) 7200rpm drives but it's impressive nevertheless. And its quiet. It's a no brainer for a PowerBook internal drive replacement or as an external drive in a FireWire 800 enclosure.
WILL A 7200RPM NOTEBOOK DRIVE DRAIN MY BATTERY FASTER?
The short answer is, "Probably not." You see, the 7200rpm drives are as much as 28% faster doing random reads and writes compared to the 5400rpm drives. They are as much as 80% faster than 4200rpm drives. Yet the Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 uses the same amount of power as the Travelstar 5K100. The Seagate Momentus 7200.1 uses only 10% more power than the Momentus 4200.2. The Momentus 5400.3 uses less power than the Momentus 4200.2. My theory is that the "speed to power" ratio is so good with the 7200rpm drives that the net effect on the battery is negligible.

  • How to tell between Aluminum and Titanium?

I have a PowerBook G4 15" laptop, but I don't know if it's Aluminum or Titanium. How does one tell, and which one is the newer model?
    Thanks!

Even easier (because you don't have to open it) the Titanium the ports are on the back, where as on the Aluminum they are on the sides.
If you need to identify a PowerBook vs. a MacBook Pro, the first thing I always look for is the built in video camera at the top of the bezel. If you can't see that, perhaps you can notice where the power cord goes in. The PowerBooks have a round hole for the power, whereas the MacBook Pros have the rectangular MagSafe connector.

  • Scripting: How To Tell Between Audio and Video Track?

When I create a collection of tracks from the main library and iterate through them, I get everything (in my case, video and audio tracks - no podcasts or TV shows as of yet). In checking the "Kind" class, they all have a value of "1".
How can I tell if a track I'm looking at is audio or video? Also, when I do start downloading podcasts and/or TV shows, is there a way to differentiate them also?
    Thanks

  • How to tell between update and insert ?

I have a form where a user can enter a value, press a button and anoher input would appear, add another value, press the button again, etc. When done, he submits and I use cfloop list to insert the data into a table.
When I bring up this form again, I check to see if there are any values in the table. If they are there, I display the values in a table, one per row.  At the end, I have the button again, just in case they need to add more values.
Here is the problem that I am running into and do not know how to solve. How do I know whether they added a new value, or simply changed one of the existing values ? Or what is they did both, change an exisitng value and add a new value ?
This is the code I use if they chagned an exisitng value :
    <cfloop index="dateCodeID" list="#form.dateCodeID#" delimiters=",">
    <cfquery name="qryUpdateDateCodes" datasource="db">
    udate table
         set dateCode = '#Evaluate("form.dateCode#dateCodeID#")#'
        where stockScreenID = '#form.stockScreenID#'
    and dateCodeID = '#dateCodeID#'
    </cfquery>
    </cfloop>
and I would use the cfloop list to insert a new value, but how would I know which one to use when they submit ? I do not know whether an exisitng value(s) changed or new value(s) added.
    Thanks

So if I have three existing values displayed, and add a new one, would I first loop thru the insert to check for the three existing records, and then insert the new record if no insert is performed ?
You would loop and call the stored procedure once for each record to be handled.  The stored procedure contains the logic to handle the insert or update determined by whether or not a record with the matching primary key value exists in your table. Some databases have built in functionality to handle insert or update logic for you.  Microsoft SQL Server 2008 has MERGE ( http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb510625.aspx ) and MySQL has INSERT ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE ( http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/6.0/en/insert-on-duplicate.html ).
Is the statement IF ( COUNT_OF_RECORDS_UPDATED = 0 ) the actual statement to check for udpated records ?
Yes, this statment is used to determine if the previous statement updated any records in the database.  The exact syntax will depend on your database server version.
What if I update only one of the three existing records, and also add a new record ?
I'm not sure I follow you.  Perhaps if you could post your ColdFusion and SQL code we could offer better responses.  You might also post a SQL specific question in a forum for your database version.

  • How can I organise photos and reduce hard drive ?

    Hi,
I have a 750GB HD and with only 30GB available now. Without replacing the current HD what is the best way to find out file size and where the storage is being used (iphotos is 40000 photos so big !) Whats the best way to reduce and transfer files ?
    Thanks

To move your iPhoto Library to an external disk:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    Regards
    TD

  • Difference between 5400 and 7200 hard drive

Looking at buying a new MBP - can't decide on the 750 G 5400 HD or the 500G 7200 HD. I like the extra space for photos on the 5400 HD but will the 7200 be a snapper unit ? I can always use an extra drive for storage - but is the speed benefit noticeable ?  I can't seem to find any recent reviews. They all seem a few years old. Plus - not sure whether the bigger drive will be just as snappy (more space) as the faster drive (possibly fulling up).
    Advice anyone ?

And probably to your surprise, they still spin at the same speeds. 5400rpm & 7200rpm.

  • Temperamental Connection Between Computer and External Hard Drive

Recently added an eHD to handle my music and it seems to work fine for the most part, well sort of.....
When I put the computer to ‘sleep’, it fires up with the connection to the eHD intact and I go about playing around. But if I need to ‘force quit’ iTunes, or ‘re-start’ or ‘shut down’ or ‘log out’ of this gizmo, the connection is lost. Usually I am reprimanded for an improper disconnect, but not always. On a few rare occasions the disconnect has occurred out of the blue; on these occasions I always get a reprimand.
However the disconnect occurs I have to unplug the eHD(firewire) from the computer and from the power source, and re -plug the eHD, in reverse order, to get that little icon to re-appear on the desktop.
What have I failed to do so that this gizmo won't reject the eHD for any reason?

Does the external drive get its power from the USB bus or does it have its own power brick? The later are usually less temperamental but I'm not sure that a self-powered powered drive would help with the force-quits.
The root cause of your trouble may be the programs wanting force quits, not the edrive, unless that ONLY happen when the edrive is connected. If you could eliminate what is causing you to force quit, then the type of drive might become a moot point.
May be worth posting in the forums for the software that's requiring you to force quit.

i have deleted my private folder and do not have enough space to reinstall my operating system. How can i transfer files from my hard drive to an USB drive to free up space when the operating system isn't working. or do i need to erase disk through disk utilities without erasing data (but will it delete my programs such as photoshop, office, creative suite?

Connect the computer to another Mac and put it in FireWire Target Disk mode, or use the Disk Utility to clone the drive or image specific folders with the USB drive as the target. After you've copied off everything you want, you'll likely need to erase the drive and reinstall the applications.

    Thanks!

I called Apple Support and they walked me through it. They told me to basically copy and paste my music to the external hard drive. (I think.) Or maybe it was they had me transfer a folder to the EHD. I don't exactally remember it was a few years back. But I tried to plug in the EHD before starting and...nothing. Still says same thing, "locate file."

Right click on your device in the device list and choose "transfer purchses" to copy all music bought in iTunes to your new iTunes library.
For all other media you'll have to use 3rd party software, examples are mentioned in this thread:
