How to tell connection speed?

Seems like my iPad sometimes connects up as N and sometimes as G speeds. I can run one of the Internet speed apps to tell but it seems like there should be an easier way to tell. Any one know?

I have a UK Virgin cable broadband service that is advertised as 50MB, it actually caps out around 34-38MB average, they gave me a free Netgear Draft N router but the throughput performance of that thing was worse than my 802.11G Airport Express and I run two Mac Pros and Powerbook two iPhones and a new iPad of that.
As I said Draft N is LARGELY Hype unless you are moving larger amounts of data on your LOCAL network.
Fact is very few internet services, a few cable providers yes (AT a Premium Cost ) but virtually no ADSL lines can deliver internet connection speeds consistently over 40MB yet.
And I do Know that Korea and an Eastern European nation have invested heavily on fibre so that really high speed services can be delivered but these are NOT typical of the likes of the UK US and much of northern Europe that continues to deliver the internet over copper telephone lines and will do for some years ahead.

  • How to improve connection speed?

    I recently converted to AT&T Uverse, and it's at a 6 rate speed. But my connection acts awfully slow.
    I don't have a full memory; I seem to be using only 40% of my hard drive memory!
    Any notion of why it's slow here? Suggestions for things to check into?
    BEST!

    Connection speed is dictated by your ISP, I would STRONGLY recommend contacting AT&T and letting them know what your poblem is. How much RAM and HD space on your computer has absolutely no bearing on the Internet connection speed.
    Good luck.

  • How To Increase Connection Speed

    My IP profile has been steady on 2.5 Mbps from a connection speed of 2.9 Mbps for months. After a recent power outage, my connection speed has fallen to 2.78 Mbps and my IP profile has gone down to 2 Mbps. If my IP profile was going to go back up I would have expected it to have done so by now.
    Is there any way to push my connection speed back up to around 2.9 Mbps so my IP profile will return to the previous value of 2.5 Mbps.
    Thank you.

    need some information first so please can you post the adsl stats from your router may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or use a-z, if netgear enter 192.168.0.1) and run btspeedtester (MAC users may have problems) bt speedtester and post the results .
    are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
    Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
    Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • How to tell wireless connection speed?

    Hi,
    I've just bought a new draft-n wireless router, I bought the Netgear DG834N as it has a Broadcom chipset in the hope that it will be more likely to interoperate with the Broadcom chipset in the iMac.
    My question is, how can I tell what speed my mac is connecting at via wireless? I'm running Leopard and I've looked in wireless status, just shows me what network and that it's using security. I also tried 'ifconfig en1' from the terminal, but that doesn't mention it either. The admin page of the router just shows connected MAC addresses, not what speed etc. that they are connecting at.
    Thanks in advance!

    I am still curious about iStat Pro. When I copy a large file over my network, AP Grapher will report 130/130 (presumably transferring at 130Mbps, however iStat will report 6MBps (48Mbps). Can any explain this?
    When discussing the “speed” of a given Wi-Fi device, it’s important to make a distinction between the unit’s theoretical maximum data transfer rate and what it actually does (the actual throughput). A Wi-Fi device’s data transfer rate refers to the speed at which data is transmitted to and from the device. For most 802.11n products currently available, including the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), this number hovers around 300 Mbps, which includes the video or audio media you’re streaming, as well as a large chunk of overhead and control data necessary to maintain security and reliability.

    Alternately, the term “throughput” refers to the amount of video, music, Internet traffic, or gaming data that can pass through your wireless network under real-world conditions. For instance, even though 802.11g networks offer 54 Mbps data rates, the actual throughput is typically less than half the speed of the data transfer rate. Below, I’ve listed the data transfer rates as well as ballpark throughput rates you might encounter under real-world conditions. Your results may vary.
    Wi-Fi Standard / Data Transfer Rate / Throughput
Rate
    802.11b / 11 Mbps / 4 Mbps
    802.11a / 54 Mbps / 23 Mbps
    802.11g / 54 Mbps / 19 Mbps
    802.11n / 300 Mbps / 82 Mbps

    The BT checker will tell you your profile and your throughput but not the speed you are actually connected at.  These are 3 different things and it is useful to know if your profile is a lot lower than your connection speed.
    There are ways to do it but I'm guessing such discussion wouldn't be wanted here.

  • How to tell current wifi connection protocol?

    Since my Time Capsule is set up to use radio mode: 802.11n (b/g compatible),
    how can I tell which speed/protocol my iMac is actually using for its current wifi connection?
    (I don't see this info in System Profiler.)

    If your mac is wireless N capable it will connect to your base station using the wireless N protocol however you wont benefit from the extra speed wireless N offers in a mixed network you have to setup and exclusive wireless N network.
    To see how fast your connection is install menu meters from raging menace
    http://www.ragingmenace.com/
    Then in the menumeters preferences set it up to monitor your network connection. This will then show you what speed your wireless interface is connected.

    Do you have a wi-fi network in your home ? If you do then you should be able to connect your phone to it via Settings > Wi-Fi on your phone - that should show any networks that are available, and tapping on the network that you want to use (and typing in its password if it's password protected) should connect the phone to it. If you don't have a wi-fi network then yes, you will need wifi router in your home, which is connected to the internet (e.g. via your phone line) to be able to back up your phone to iCloud.

  • How to tell if my connect is a gigabit connection?

    I have a WRT600N running on Vista SP1 and I know that I have a gigabit network card. But when I have it connected to the router, my network status icon only shows the connection is 100 Mps.
    Does this mean that for some reason my connection speed isn't 1000 Mps? or is this just the way it is?
    If so, is there a way to tell if you're really on a gigabit connection?
    TIA

    Hey try resetting the router reset button in such a way that power
    light is blinking on the router & then do a complete network power
    cycle i.e., unplug the power cables from the modem & from the router &
    then plug in the power cable to the modem first once all the lights are
    solid green you could plug in the power cable to the router & check out
    it will definately work!!
    Open the setup page of router using 192.168.1.1 then put in the
    password as admin...all you need to do is do the wireless settings such
    as Radio Band Frequency to Standard 20 MHZ frequency,channel to 11.
    Also,the advanced wireless settings to Beacon Interval=50,Frag
    thres=2306 & Rts thres=2307 & then uncheck a Block Anonymous Internet
    Requests & it will definately work!!!

  • How do I connect my drive to iMac for best transfer speeds using an adapter

    Hi,
    My question is: which port on my "old" LaCie hard drive should I use to connect to my iMac for optimum speed transfer? Should I use an adapter?
    I am a pro music producer/songwriter & sound designer. I use large audio files in my AVID DAW Pro Tools 11 application both to read and write constantly.
    For this I have dedicated hard drives such as a 6TB Promise Peagasus with Thunderbolt 1. But it's starting to run a little slow due to all the information residing only on this 1 unit.
    I want to spread out my audio files on other hard drives as well. The one I MAYBE want to use, is a LaCie hard drive I have had for a couple of years.
    Important: I only have 1 Thunderbolt port left to use on my iMac and 1 Ethernet port.
    So do I need an adapter and what would be the speed then?
    My question is how do I connect it for optimum speed transfer?
    It is a LaCie D2 Quadra V2 E hard disk with 32mb cache.
    It has:
    1 FW 400,
    2 FW 800,
    1 High-Speed USB 2.0,
    1 eSATA 3Gb/s.
    I have an iMac 27" Mid 2011, 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 with 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 running OS X 10.9.4.
    I look forward to your replies.
    Kind regards,
    Michael

    Thanks. Yes it is nice. Sounds interesting with your G force. I think I did put the Raid to 5, but cannot really remember. All I know is that when I did use Raid 5, I agreed to use 1 of the 6TB for some backup or security stuff that it takes care of on it's own. I thought it sounded good and safe when I installed it.
    Am unsure how to check it.
    I just read about the Raid block size which can be set to higher than my 32k in the Disk Doctor app to work faster with large amounts of continues data transfers. But it means that I should perform a new Raid. Not happy at all about this as I am very careful about my audio files.
    Yes, I'll definitely go for the Thunderbolt/FireWire adaptor!

  • I had to get a new iphone and want to know how to tell if my pictures from my previous phone were backed up on itunes.  when i connect my c even if i'm going from a 4 to a 5s?

    i had to get a new iphone and want to know how to tell if my pictures from my previous phone were backed up on itunes.  when i connect to itunes, does it automatically sync / backup even if i'm going from a 4 w/IOS 6 to a 5S w/IOS 7?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    Yes you can probably delete the 2 incomplete back ups they are unlikely to work.
    However, I'd be inclined to back up to a computer as well and restore from there, if you are changing your phone.

  • How to tell the actual nic speed in Windows 8?

    I really !.....  hate many things about Windows 8 but the nic speed has to be one of my most despised "features".    I used to go to monitor my nic in task manager and BOOM it told you that you had a gigabit connection and you
    might be using 10% of your throughput or in mbits the actual throughput you were consuming.
    That is exactly the only thing I ever want to see - total possible speed and the percentage I'm using - I can't figure out if my computers are connecting at gigabit or 100mbit or even 10mbit now.   Can you please tell me an easy way of finding
    that out without trying to transfer a HUGE file and watching the graph go up?   Is there any way to get it back to the way it worked so well in Windows 7?    I know there are a lot of addons like classic shell to fix the cluster !.....
    that is Windows 8.   If there is a way to get this simple informative network detail back I would greatly appreciate it.

    What I see in the graph is my throughput is 64Kbps for send and 280 Kbps for receive.   What I know is that my connection speed is 1Gbit and my throughput would barely register above 0% at the moment.
    I care about the 1Gbit and the 1% but can't get that chart to show up.   That is the chart that is far more meaningful to me than a sliding scale.
    I just noticed I can right click and get that info under network details.   Is there any way to get the graph to show me what matters instead of a ticker that has no stable foundation?

  • How to know current speed of connection in Kbps?

    Does anyone know how to know the speed of network/internet connection? I couldn't find any member method of JAVA's class that returns this value. Very appreciate for all your hints.

    Try something like this:public class Test
      public static void main(String[] argv)
        try
          URL url = new URL("http://java.sun.com"); /* put a pointer to some big image here */
          InputStream is = url.openConnection().getInputStream();
          int bytes = 0;
          long ms = System.currentTimeMillis();
          while(is.read() != -1) bytes++;
          ms = System.currentTimeMillis() - ms;
          double kbps = ((double)bytes / ((double)ms / 1000)) / 1024;
          System.out.println("kbps = " + (long)kbps);
          System.exit(0);
        catch(Throwable t)
          t.printStackTrace();
          System.exit(-1);
    }I suggest you repeat this test for several pointers and take the average...

  • Connection Speed - How do you know?

    Isthere any real way to tell if your internet speed is up to par or out of whack with online broadband speed test sites?
    I used  speakeasy.com  (bottom right corner for speed test)
    and I usually get 2.9mbps download, and 900kbps upload maxes. It goes up to 10-10+ on the meter.
    I use startstream cable internet. I have 3-4machines on my network, 1 wired, but usually only 1 wired running and 1 wireless.
    Any insight is appreciated!

    To test your internet speed, ideally you should use a computer wired to your router.  Turn off all the other computers and network devices, so that you are certain that they are not using any bandwidth.
    Use the broadband speed test of your choice.  Run the test several times.  Print and save a copy of your best speed for future reference.
    When you do the speed tests, you should realize that the farther the test signal travels, and the more internet relays that it goes through, the slower the connection speed will be.  Your fastest connections will usually be to sites within a few hundred miles from home.
    Ideally your best speed tests should show that you are getting a speed close to what you are paying for.  If you are paying for 3 Mbps and your speed test shows 2.9 Mbps, thats just fine.  If you are paying for 6 Mbps, but only getting 2.9 Mbps, then you need to track down the problem.  ( I had this very problem once.  The phone company had "forgotten" to turn on the higher speed!).
    Other speed test sites include:
    a)   2wire.com
    b)   pcpitstop.com
    c)   http://support.sbcglobal.net/dsl/speedtest/
    The last site belongs to the new AT&T  (formerly SBC).  I don't know if it works for everybody, or just users on the AT&T system.
    Also, be sure to check your ISP (internet service provider's) web site.  Most of them offer speed tests.

  • How can I tell wireless speed?

    Hi,
    How can I check the connection speed on my Mac? I am assuming there is a way - on my boyfriend's PC, the mbps is given right with the signal strength. I can't see on Internet Connect where you are given the actual mbps.
    Thank you! Amy

    You need to log onto a service that reports broadband speed. There is not just one standard. The speed depends on the distance to the server (you get faster rates with closer servers) and the way the test is performed.
    I do ok with visualware (http://myspeed.visualware.com/) but all you need to do is Google broadband speed tests and you will come up with 20 free ones and lots of pay ones, too.
