How to tell if an image is CMYK?

Hi everyone,
I'm new to color schemes / printing, and I'm working with converting a file from RGB to CMYK and I have a few questions.
Before I start, you should know I'm just working with Pages '08, and I don't have Acrobat Professional, Photoshop, Illustrator, or anything like that.
First, how do I tell if a file is actually CMYK or not?
Second, is it only image files that can be CMYK - or can PDFs be CMYK as well? If PDFs can be CMYK, again, how do I tell if the file is actually in this format?
Thanks.

Hi,
If you need to know if an image is CMYK you can just so a simple Get Info on it (Apple + I) then click on More Info. This should tell you the colourspace of the image.
If you are worried about sending a Pages PDF to print then the best thing to do is speak to your repro company. I recently sent a Pages created PDF to a repro house for printing. It wasn't idea (as you can't set things like bleed and crop marks, which a printer may ask for) but in my case it printed fine.

  • How to batch convert RGB images to CMYK

    Hello,
    Can anyone explain in a step-by-step way how to batch-convert many RGB images to CMYK?
    Thanks in advance

    If you do want to use Photoshop for the bact conversion there are a few ways, including Batch and Image Procesor under the File>Automate or File>Scripts of PS.
    However, my preference is to use Russell Brown's script: Image Processsor Pro, via Bridge:
    http://www.russellbrown.com/scripts.html
    As similar one is Picture Processor:
    http://www.scriptsrus.talktalk.net/
    Both allow you to do multiple conversions simultaneously, to different sizes and file types, and running actions before or after the conversions.

  • How to tell b&w image from color?

    Sounds spectacularly dumb, I know, and maybe it is, but here goes:
    I have been scanning old b/w photos as color for a book; however, I believe that when I wasn't paying attention, a handful were scanned as b/w. How can I tell whether they were scanned in color or in b/w, in which case I'll have to rescan them?
    flat-screen iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi Eliot,
    I don't understand why you would want them in RGB. A b&w photo is just that, b&w. Having it in RGB is still b&w (all pixels with identical values in each channel). The only thing you succeed in is tripling the size of each image by having them in RGB rather than grayscale.
    Then there's the problem of RGB when it comes to printing. I'm talking about professional publication here, not ink jet or laser prints. If you convert a b&w file saved as an RGB file to CMYK, most of the color will be converted to the CMY channels with a minimal black. This causes huge headaches on press. Any slight variation of ink on paper will cause the images to shift blue, pink or green depending on which of the CMY inks go off balance during the print run. You are far better off saving b&w images as grayscale. Both for printing and saving space on your drive. A grayscale image will print as black only. With no problems of color shifting as would happen if separated as a CMYK image.

  • How to tell if an Image is loaded using Toolkit.getImage()

    If I use Toolkit.getImage(url) it always returns an Image object, no matter if the image located at that url is a correct image or not.
    The w/h is always -1, -1 right after loading (since it hasn't been loaded completely of course).
    Anyone know how I can tell if a correct image is loaded or not, without adding a MediaTracker?

    Why don't you want to use a MediaTracker? It is by far the most convenient way to do what you want to do.

  • How Can I Tell If An Image Has A Preview?

    I searched around and couldn't find the answer to this and I'm sure it's been asked and answered.
    The only way I've been able to tell if an image has a preview is if I see the Loading ... box when I click on an image in the Viewer.
    Is there another way?
    I couldn't find anything in the Metadata, but maybe I missed it.
    When I Right-Click an image it seems I always get Delete Preview as an option, even if I just deleted it. (in Preferences, I'm not generating Previews)

    This is why I was asking the question.
    I found out (I think from another discussion here) that if you drag an image out of Aperture, you will get the Preview, not the Version.
    So, I wanted to see if there is an easy way to tell if what I'm looking at has a Preview. But it appears the only way to tell is to do things like dragging an image out of Aperture to see if a Plus sign appears, or if you click on an image and see (very briefly) Loading ...
    Right clicking the image doesn't really tell you if there is or is not a Preview.
    I was hoping there would be an easier way. Wouldn't it be helpful if there was a tag to indicate this? Maybe not a tag for a Preview, but a tag indicating a lack of a Preview?
    I think I'll send Apple feedback requesting a feature for this. I'm not really hung up on how it's implemented. I'm sure Apple could come up with something useful.
    Thanks.

  • How to convert sRGB images to CMYK retaining icc profiles?

    I was given the follwoing info. but not sure it answers fully - it still doesn't resolve the problem of converting to CMYK with the icc profile. I think this might be an option if the profile is loaded into the colour setting (colour settings under edit menu as oposed to convert to profile and its convert to profile I have been trying to action. Am I missing something straightforward?
    thanks!
    you can do batch process in Photoshop

    -There is a fast and easy method to batch convert many RGB photographs to CMYK files by using Photoshop
    -Please open an image, then open the Action Tab (Window > Actions)
    -Please click 'Create new action' button, name the action in the text field and click the 'Record' button.
    -Now it is recording, so select 'Image > Mode > CMYK Color', then hit the 'Stop' button in the Action Tab.
    -The action is now created ready for the next step.
    -To batch convert a folder of images, just select 'File > Automate > Batch' and the following window opens.
    -Choose the 'Convert RGB to CMYK' action from the drop-down list, choose the source folder where your images are stored, then choose a destination folder where Photoshop will save the converted images.
    -Click the 'OK' button and the batch process will start. How fast will depend on the number of images that need converting.
    -The action you created will be stored, so you only need to perform a new batch process the next time you need to convert a batch of images.

    I think we may need a little more information to fully address your question or issue.  sRGB and CMYK are two very different color spaces, and converting from one to the other requires significant shifts in color.  Are you refering to a specific input or output icc profile?

  • How to tell which photos in iPhoto are HDR images.

    Does anyone know how to tell which photos in iPhoto are HDR images.  When I click on the Info button for the image it doesn't indicate if it was an HDR.

    You can do a filter on your library with "File Status" is "Missing". The "File Status" query is not available by default, but you can add it by clicking the upper-right button in the filter window.

  • Problem using images of CMYK colorspace in PDF file

    I am reading a PDF file that contains an image with CMYK colorspace, I am reading the image data correctly but couldn't convert it to RGB color space, as I need to display this image in my own application so please tell me how can I convert it to RGB color space or how can I display it by remaining in the CMYK colors pace. Any help will be highly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Ali

    Adobe Reader will convert for display, there should be no problem if you use Adobe Reader. Adobe Reader will use the CMYK profile from the PDF, or your default profile, and will convert to your default RGB profile for display.

  • How to tell N6.5 DHCP to use a W2k8 for PXE?

    Hello,
    could anyone give me a hint, how to tell my netware DHCP to use a Windows Server 2008 R2 running Acronis with PXE Server?
    Actual Situation:
    Netware 6.5 Sp8 Server with ZENWORKS in Cluster mode
    Netware DHCP Server
    ZEN7 SP1 Imaging
    --> works fine so far, and no problem in other subnets, IP-helper are configured in the switches
    New Situation:
    Netware 6.5 Sp8 Server with ZENWORKS in Cluster mode
    Netware DHCP Server
    Windows Server 2008 R2 running Acronis Snap Deploy with PXE-Server - in future may be a clean Windows Deployment service without Acronis
    --> that would be nice :)
    I found serveral ini-files (dts.ini, pdhcp.ini, tftp.ini) where I configured the new IP-Address of the W2k8 PXE Server.
    Now:
    The Client gets its correct IP-Address from Netware DHCP
    but after that the following messages:
    Auto-select:
    ZENworks Boot
    Boot Server IP: --.--.--.-- (the correct one configured in the ini-files!)
    TFTP.
    PXE-T02:
    PXE-E3C: TFTP Error - Access Violation
    PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent
    Any ideas?
    Thanks a lot.

This option should only be set if both DHCP and PXE services are on the same server (as is probably the case in your situation as I'm guessing both DHCP as also PXE get loaded in the same cluster resource script).
    For subnets serviced outside of the subnet your DHCP server is running in, you will need to configure multiple ip helpers: one that points to the DHCP server and one points to the PXE server so those requests on other subnets get serviced correctly.
    To get things running it's probably easier to try to get this to work on the subnet your DHCP and PXE server are running in (so you are not also having to deal with the ip helper setup just yet). If that works, then expand you configuration to different subnets & ip helpers.
    Hope that helps,
    Willem
    As a ps and for clarification, don't load the PDHCP on any of the NetWare servers... just have the PXE PDHCP service running on the Windows server.
    The PDHCP/PXE service for ZenWorks won't understand/work with the Arconis one and visa versa.

  • How do you shuffle the image order when creating a new slideshow in apterture 3?  i would like to do this automatically when creating a new slideshow.  i see how you do it when you just play a slideshow.

    how do you shuffle the image order when creating a new slideshow in apterture 3?  i would like to do this automatically when creating a new slideshow.  i see how you do it with presets when you just play a slideshow, but i don't see an option to randomly shuffle the slide order when you create a new slideshow.  i know you can sort it by different fields, but i want it to be random.  thanks.

    If you want to rearrange images in random order you can try an AppleScript:
    retrieve a list of selected images from Aperture
    shuffe the list properly
    create an album in Aperture and add the images from the list to the album (make sure that the album set to be orederd manually)
    Here  is a sample script that shuffles the selected images and displays them in random order in Full Screen Mode:
    on removeItem(ims, i)
      -- remove the item at position "i" from a list ims
              if ims is {} then return {}
              if (length of ims is 1) then return {}
              if i < 2 then return rest of ims
              if (i = length of ims) then return (items 1 thru (i - 1) of ims)
              if i > (length of ims) then return ims -- should be error?
              return (items 1 thru (i - 1) of ims) & (items (i + 1) thru (length of ims) of ims)
    end removeItem
    on shuffle_items(ims)
      -- shuffle the items of the list "ims" randomly
              local numitems, ims_shuffled, nextrest, nextpick, i
              set numitems to length of ims
              if length of ims < 2 then return ims
              set ims_shuffled to {}
              set nextrest to ims
              repeat until nextrest is {}
                        set i to (random number (numitems - 1)) + 1
                        set nextpick to item i of nextrest
                        set beginning of ims_shuffled to nextpick
                        set numitems to numitems - 1
                        set nextrest to removeItem(nextrest, i)
              end repeat
              return ims_shuffled
    end shuffle_items
    on shuffleIms()
      -- retrieve the selected images from Aperture
      -- and display them in random order in full screen mode
              local imageSel, shuffled, i
              tell application "Aperture"
      activate
                        set imageSel to (get selection)
                        set shuffled to my shuffle_items(imageSel)
                        set fullscreen to true
                        if imageSel is {} then error "Please select some images."
                        repeat with i from 1 to count of shuffled
                                  reveal {item i of shuffled}
      delay 3 -- chnage that to the time you want
                        end repeat
                        set fullscreen to false
                        return shuffled
              end tell
    end shuffleIms
    shuffleIms()
    Some more code snippets to go from here:
    To create an album:
                        tell library 1
                                  if not (exists album "shuffledAlbum") then
      make new album with properties {name:"shuffledAlbum", image version:shuffled}
                                  end if
                        end tell
    And to add the images from the shuffled list to the album:
                        repeat with i from 1 to count of shuffled
                                  duplicate item i of shuffled to album "shuffledAlbum"
                        end repeat
    Regards

  • How to insert or upload image in RichTextEditor ?

    Hello everyone,
    I am new to flex and trying to design a full-fledged RichTextEditor in flex builder,Can anyone tell me how to add or upload image
    in RichTextEditor at users cursor location ?
    also user should be able to resize and move the image around the text editor.

    It can be done in either. There are 3 steps.
    Learn about greenscreen (keying) including lighting, filming, best formats for video (the way they do it in the weather segment) or masking and roto.
    learn about image editing including sizing images, color correcting, applying effects
    learn about controlling motion and editing duration of stills in a NLE or After Effects
    When you have a few of these basics down and have designed your production you then load up the video and the stills, key out the background or mask around your talent to separate the talent from the background, add your photos to the time line and animate their duration and position.
    This is extremely basic stuff that can be accomplished in a NLE or in AE. You can basically reproduce just about any effect you've ever seen in a movie in AE with the right planning and plug-ins. You can do just about anything you've ever seen in a news broadcast in any modern NLE.

    javax.imageio API allows you to write/create a jpeg/png/bmp/wbmp ... image format. I don't think there's support for svg. you'll have to look for some third party plugin.
