How to tell wireless connection speed?

Hi,
I've just bought a new draft-n wireless router, I bought the Netgear DG834N as it has a Broadcom chipset in the hope that it will be more likely to interoperate with the Broadcom chipset in the iMac.
My question is, how can I tell what speed my mac is connecting at via wireless? I'm running Leopard and I've looked in wireless status, just shows me what network and that it's using security. I also tried 'ifconfig en1' from the terminal, but that doesn't mention it either. The admin page of the router just shows connected MAC addresses, not what speed etc. that they are connecting at.
Thanks in advance!

I am still curious about iStat Pro. When I copy a large file over my network, AP Grapher will report 130/130 (presumably transferring at 130Mbps, however iStat will report 6MBps (48Mbps). Can any explain this?
When discussing the “speed” of a given Wi-Fi device, it’s important to make a distinction between the unit’s theoretical maximum data transfer rate and what it actually does (the actual throughput). A Wi-Fi device’s data transfer rate refers to the speed at which data is transmitted to and from the device. For most 802.11n products currently available, including the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), this number hovers around 300 Mbps, which includes the video or audio media you’re streaming, as well as a large chunk of overhead and control data necessary to maintain security and reliability.

Alternately, the term “throughput” refers to the amount of video, music, Internet traffic, or gaming data that can pass through your wireless network under real-world conditions. For instance, even though 802.11g networks offer 54 Mbps data rates, the actual throughput is typically less than half the speed of the data transfer rate. Below, I’ve listed the data transfer rates as well as ballpark throughput rates you might encounter under real-world conditions. Your results may vary.
Wi-Fi Standard / Data Transfer Rate / Throughput
Rate
802.11b / 11 Mbps / 4 Mbps
802.11a / 54 Mbps / 23 Mbps
802.11g / 54 Mbps / 19 Mbps
802.11n / 300 Mbps / 82 Mbps

    No.
The BT checker will tell you your profile and your throughput but not the speed you are actually connected at.  These are 3 different things and it is useful to know if your profile is a lot lower than your connection speed.
There are ways to do it but I'm guessing such discussion wouldn't be wanted here.

  • Dropping Wireless Connection & Speed Slowing Down

    Hi,
Up until a week ago I had two BT lines, I will call them line 1 and line 2.  Line 1 (front room) was used purely for phone calls, and line 2 (middle room) had Broadband activated on it. When it came time to renew the yearly line rental I checked and had it confirmed by BT that the available Broadband speed was faster on line 1, so I decided to cancel line 2, and move my Home Hub 4 into room 1 having arranged to activate Broadband on what in theory should be a line that gives a better speed.
My current problem is two-fold. Firstly I am not yet getting the line speed that I was expecting. I have spoken to the Technical Help Line, and understand that following the activation of Broadband on the line in Room 1 I should wait 10 days for the available speed to stabalise. Currently I am 7 days on from line activation.
A few days ago I was getting download speeds around 2.70 Mbps, with upload speeds around 0.38 Mbps. The IP profile for the download speed at that time was set at 2.77 Mbps. The IP profile for the upload speed was set at 0.45 Mbps. Over the past week I have done numerous speed checks and found that the speed did vary, as might be expected, but was generally always around these figures. Because of the line check speeds I was given by BT's own staff I was expecting the available speed to get better, not slow down! I was originally advised to expect line speeds of between 3.5 Mbps - 5.5 Mbps.
Over the last 24 - 36 hours the speed has slowed down, and a few minutes ago these are the figures I observed:
Download speed achieved during the test was - 1.3 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 0.8 Mbps-2 Mbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 1.33 Mbps
Upload speed achieved during the test was - 0.34Mbps
    Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 0.45 Mbps
Line speed then is one issue, but there is another.
My second, presently very frustrating problem is that even though the Hub 4 is consistently powered, and maintains a steady Blue light showing that Broadband is available, my wireless connection that I receive from the Hub keeps dropping. I should add that the distance from the Hub 4 in Room 1 to where I work with my laptop in Room 2 is only about 15 - 20 feet. I used the old Hub 2 until a few weeks ago, and neither my daughter on her laptop, or myself, had any problems with 'dropping' the wireless signal, whichever room we were in, or even if we used our respective laptops elsewhere in the house. I was convinced enough by the publicity 'blurb' to believe that Hub 4 was more reliable, with fewer drop-outs. So far this has not proven to be the case.
I know that I need to wait a few days more till the 10 days are up, but would really appreciate some kind soul commenting on the above. I have looked at the Logs, but without knowing what segment would be helpful in aiding a diagnosis of my two issues I didn't want to provide unnecessary information. So if any particular element of the Logs would be useful, please let me know.
    Yours in hope,
    Alan
    Solved!

    Hello again,
With your help I was able to locate the place to change the channel manually, which I did, thanks for that. It only resulted in a marginal improvement, but any improvement is good I guess.
HH4 has now been showing a steady connection for three + days, so, as requested, here are the noise stats:
    16:14:16, 26 Nov.    ( 76.170000) DSL noise margin: 22.00 dB upstream, 12.20 dB downstream
    16:14:16, 26 Nov.    ( 76.080000) DSL line rate: 448 Kbps upstream, 3104 Kbps downstream
I have done several speed tests and they all show broadly similar results, namely that my download speed is usually around 2.67, whereas my IP Profile is set at 2.74.
I don't know whether this is worth mentioning but I only have an old style BT socket on my line, not one that has a test socket inside, so I can't do any of the tests using that facility.
Although my broadband connection has been stable and active on the HH4, as far as using wireless to connect my laptop in another room I do still get several dropped connections each day.
Even when I am connected to my HH4 by wireless, and my signal, as now, is only in the four bar bracket, by looking at the other Networks that are active in my street/area I can see, although it is rightly secured, that someone is using a HH3 and the signal on that is powerful enough to register a full five bar (excellent) strength on my laptop. How near or far away from me that user with a HH3 is I do not know, the point is however I can receive a more powerful and consistent signal from their Hub than my own. I must confess to being puzzled by that. What could be the reason?
Is there any further help or guidance that you can give that might assist in raising my IP profile, in the hope that my speed might increase? Or do you have any further suggestions as to how I might reduce the noise on my line to a more acceptable amount, so that my signal might give me a better wireless connection?
Thanks again for any advice or help you are able to give.
    Regards,
    Alan

  • Has anybody solved the slow wireless connections speeds of the new Imacs

I have just purchased the new imac...and was made aware of the disastrous connections speeds using wireless.. Does anybody know if apple have come up with a solution...or are they just not dealing with the problem?

I am a brand new Mac user with a new 24 inch iMac purchase. Macs are supposed to be hassle free right? Right. No question I was about ready to throw it out the window because the wireless connection to the expensive AP base station was, oh, 100x slower than my Dell laptop side by side about 1 foot away. Nothing changed even if I connected directly to the AP using an ethernet cable. My connection consists of an Actiontec DSL gateway connected directly to my AP extreme that allows wireless to my PC laptop as well as my new iMac. Hours and hours go by until I find this help link on Mac Orchard Forums:

+WOW!! everyone else with this problem read this! i was having these same huge speed problems using the internet with my new 24" dual core intel imac with 2 gigs of ram and found a posting on another site's thread that fixed it completely.+
+"Try setting your DNS servers to OpenDNS (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220) and see if that helps at all. Maybe the ISP's changes increased the load on their DNS servers."+
+my guess is that somehow these DNS servers work the way tiger likes them to while others dont, i have no clue other than to say it works!!+
+heres a site i found that helped me understand how to change the settings:+
    +http://portforward.com/networking/static-Mac10.4.htm "+
With the new Leopard installed I went to the "portforward" link first and followed the instructions exactly to set a static IP address, then I reset my DNS servers with the exact numbers you see above - IT WORKED IMMEDIATELY!!!!! I didn't have to call my ISP or anything, it just worked exactly as it should with both Safari and Firefox. Now this Mac is flying and I will not be tossing it back to Jobs.
    Good Luck!

  • Any programs to display wireless connection speed?

Just curious to find out if there's any way to see how much mbps my wireless AirPort Extreme card is operating on? Is there software that can show more details about the connection speeds it's running?
All that the AirPort utility shows is signal strength and not much else...
    Thanks.

Jus to clarify, when you check the up/down speeds at a site like speakeasy.net, it shows you the results you get at that particular site.
It does not mean that those results are what you will get at other sites performing other functions.
The speeds you see from realtime software like Activity Monitor show what is actually going on at any given moment.

  • How do I wirelessly connect my iPad 4 to a Sony Bravia TV?

My Sony Bravia KDL-32W653A recognises that my iPad4 is on my LAN. But I just can't get the iPad content ( videos ) to show up on the TV screen.
The iPad Settings shows the " direct -GC-Bravia" other connection, but it wants to revert to my (John Lewis wireless connection.
If I tap on the other, Bravia panel I am asked for a password. I don't have a password for it and never have had. If I try to use my Apple password or that of my Sony support log-in or even my LAN home group , the iPad just messages:-  "Unable to connect to Diect-GC-Bravia"
I seem to go round in circles and get nowhere- Can anyone out there who has an iPad 4 (retina display AND a Sony Bravia TV help me please?
Maybe even a Sony employee? who owns a similar iPad?
    Davidthebass.

You dont.  Apple won't allow widely used standards and Sony is so behind the times in this area it's painful and almost as bad.  Apple forces you to buy an Apple TV whereas Sony forces you to own an android phone to do this natively.  Surprise!
disappointed I started my smartphone tenure with Apple; had no idea how badly it was going to burn me in about 100 different ways over the years.  All they have on android these days is more efficient hardware...: and since they don't take advantage of it... It's a moot point at the price premium.
as for Sony.  I just spent more than I did on my last car for their flagship and id be satisfied if it costed about 75% less and wasn't a "smart" TV.  Since it is - and this is 2015; the cost coupled with the inability to properly stream or mirror from.... Meh.  Not gonna waste another word.  If neither get it by now, they never will.  Talk with your wallet guys, it's the only language they understand.  Unfortunately they are wise enough to know the sheep outnumber dramatically so it's in vain anyhow.

  • WRV54G Slow Wireless Connection Speeds

    Good Afternoon,
I purchased a WRV54G recently to replace my WRT54G as I needed to run a road-warrior VPN setup. This for the most part works fine overall using QuickVPN.
The issue I am having is the connection speeds I am getting when my local lan PC's connect wirelessly to the WRV54G router. For some reason I can never get a connection over 11.0 MBS while using the WRT54G I always got 54.0 MBS which I would expect since all PC's are running 802.11G cards.
I did upgrade to the latest firmware on the site thinking this may have be the issue, this however did not help. The other thing I noticed was if I place the router in a G Only state, no wireless PC can connect to the router.
Any help would be appreciated. It is odd I get full 54.0mbs connections using the WRT54G, but when using the WRV54G I get 11.0mbs. It like it is connection B only which is very odd.
    Thanks,
    Chris

hi...try out the following wireless settings
on the router's ui , go to " wireless " tab and change the channel - 11 , go to "advanced wireless settings " and change the "Control TX Rates"  to 54mbps , beacon - 75 , fragmentation - 2306 and RTS - 2307.....let me know if that works for you...

  • Wireless connection speed over Infinity 1.

Hi there, I have infinity 1 with the hub in an adjacent room to my computer, and when I do a speed test wirelessly the speed comes out at ~5mpb/s. I understand that wirelessly the speed tends to decrease a little, but why is it so low????

There are many reasons why your wireless speed could be low such as wireless interference, out dated drivers on your computer, and the construction of your property.
If you have a smart phone, download a Wifi Analyser app. It will show you the wireless channels and which one your Homehub is on. You want to find the channel with the least congestion, ie. least number of users. Once you have that you need to change your homehub onto that channel. If you can't use a Wifi Analyser select a channel and see if it improves, if not select another until you find the best one. This will also switch off "smart wireless" that can cause problems.
See link how to change channel on homehub
    http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/14094
On your computer, check that the wireless network card drivers are up to date. Use the card manufacturers website rather than Windows which can be out of date.
Make sure that "Smart set up" on the Homehub is turned off

  • Wireless connection speed fluctuating:  please help if you can.

    Hi there,
I have a problem with wireless Internet connection speed which spinning my head off, I desperately need other people advice please.
My AirPort Express (AirTunes) serves the flat with Internet, two pc’s and an iMac (Intel Chip). The first pc is a sony laptop that has the Centrino platform (i.e. Wireless ready) and the other pc has an internal D-Link Air DWL-510 wireless PCI (IEEE 802.11b)
The laptop seems to get the maximum speed of the internet connection anytime anywhere in the flat, the iMac gets 70% of the connection speed. While the PC with DWL-510 gets only 30 – 40% of the connection speed only. However, sometimes all the sudden, both the iMac & the PC will get the maximum speed as it should! On a random bases.
I am puzzled trying to establish why is that happening? what could it possibly be that is curbing the connection speed to start with? And what changes that sometimes the pc will get the full connection speed? I have a wireless phone at home, I have a wireless temperature controller as well, and there are wooden walls dividing the rooms in between. I tried switching the wireless devices on and off but the results produced had no affect. My AirPort Express is password protected, so (most likely) no one is steeling my bandwidth. So, what else am missing? What other factors that causing this fluctuation in my internet connection!!?? Please advice if you can think of anything?
    Many thanks.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   iMac 17' 1.8 MHz PowerPC 1.25 mb RAM

hello Satchmo.. thanks a lot for your reply.
In regards to the first point (ISP connection), I agree. When I tried to test the line some time ago (on a wired link) I noticed the fluctuation, but it was acceptable. The problem I have now is that the 2mb connection I have, this particular pc receives only 600kb (+/- 10% variable), where is the other 1.4mb going? Sometimes, all the sudden I notice my connection go mad and I get the full speed for a while! I don't know what has changed from the surroundings.
The other things you mentioned (source of influence i.e. other wireless networks that might be crossing mine, bluetooth devices and Ethernet port is used while the wireless is in use) all are viable possibilities. I’ll start testing to check if any of ‘em is the case. Especially other wireless networks, cause its seems that my wireless card discovers at least other two connections along side to mine. I guess if it was the case, nothing much I’ll be able to do about it.
Also thnx for the link.. I don’t understand why I failed to find it when I searched the net!!

  • How do I monitor connection speeds on the E4200?

All my previous routers have allowed me to monitor my connection speeds however I can't find this in this router.  I found the client table under "status" but I have not been able to find the connection speeds anywhere.  I like to make sure that my devices are running at close to 300Mbps and not 54Mbps in case I have a connection setup wrong.  I have searched in the forums without much luck.  Thanks.

Tomato or DD-WRT opensource firmware would allow this...keep in mind that the E4200V2 will NEVER be supported by any opensource non-OEM firmware!

  • How to secure wireless connection with additional laptop and ipod touch.

    Hello,
We are new to Mac and struggling with internet security.
We have a wireless internet dongle that connects into a USB port and some days our ipod touch can connect other days it cant, I am never prompted for a password to connect.  This morning we were setting up a new laptop for our daughter and it found our wireless network and informed us it was unsecured. So we assume anyone within range is utilising our wireless connection.
If I turn on firewalls it shuts off everything, if we look at airport we get even more confused.
Is there a simple way to resolve this so our internet connection is for our house only and new devises that try to connect need to enter a password.

  • Photosmart Premium C350g how to tell wireless working?

Installing on a MacBook Pro hooked up by usb to new printer - Configuring the printer, no network showed up - even with that network visible to 3 other computers that are farther away from the router (the router is a Time Capsule). I have read through a number of threads, all seem to indicate that I should be able to see the printer's presence or it should see my network, but I can find no indication that this is true.  If I wire the printer to the router, it is there and configurable, but still will not see my network (after pulling the wired connection, restarting the printer, and using the panel to turn radio on).  In short, if the radio just didn't work in this printer, I would be in the same boat.  How can one tell that the radio works?  I haven't seen entries in the router log that would suggest it tried to connect.

Thank you for the reply - I appreciate the help.  I wrote that first post at 1:30 AM, so first a correction - it is a Photosmart Premium AIO, model C309g.
The blue 802.11 light is on when it is trying setup, or when turned on from the control panel.  The wireless test page shows it is on but not connected.  The printer shows up on the router when connected by ethernet cable, and I can look at wireless config settings in a web browser at that point.  I can set it up by USB but it doesn't see the network, either when it searches, or when it accepts the connection parameters my laptop is using successfully.  I tried setting it up again through the ethernet cable/web browser route, then disconnecting the cable and changing to wireless, but it still does not see the network.
The router (Apple Time Capsule) I am using is advertising its existence, and shows up on 802.11n and 802.11g devices (laptops, iPhones, my neighbors can see it).   In addition, HP's tech specs on this printer say it has 802.11n wireless, so I don't think the g/n issue is in play.  What I am looking for is a way to confirm that the printer's wireless is actually working when I can't get it to see a network everything else has no problem seeing.  There is no Mac address filtering on the router; I have used WEP and WPA/WPA2 setups for the router, no luck.  Can I set the printer to broadcast an ad-hoc network ID or something so that it would show up to other devices, just to show that it is actually on the air?  Should it show up in the router's log files in any event? I can look for a Mac address from it, which I have from the config page, but I don't see it.
I may have missed something in the settings/connectivity area, but I don't know what that would be.  At this point I am trying to eliminate the possibility that the 802.11 radio in the printer is faulty.

  • Huge drop in wireless connection speed

Hi, I've had my MacBook Pro for a month or two now, and have been connecting to the internet through airport extreme, which was working incredibly well.
All of a sudden, it's taking me 1+ minutes to load up more complex sites, perhaps about 10 seconds to load Google; occasionally safari informs me that I'm not connected to the internet, even though my signal is very strong - it happens when I'm sitting right next to my router, but if I click on network diagnostics, it tells me my connection is fine and working.
The second error message I find is "cannot find the server"
Firefox encounters the slow page retrieval issue as well (I say page retrieval because once I finally get to a site, the file downloads are at good speeds). I updated to the safari 3 beta as a stab in the dark, but if anything things got worse.
I've tried multiple channels, turning interference protection on and off on both the router and the MacBook, switching DNS server, turning my wireless security off completely, nothing I've changed is making a difference.
Has anyone got any ideas what could have gone wrong? I'm amazingly frustrated right now!
    Thanks, Ed

    Hello Valerie,
It sounds like you want to be able to see what you have on your computer screen, on your tv screen wirelessly.
This function is called Airplay Mirroring and is done through an AppleTV found here:
    http://store.apple.com/us/ipod/ipod-accessories/apple-tv
It is a device that attaches to your TV with an HDMI cable and when it is set up, will allow you to use the Airplay Mirroring function.

  • Wireless connection speeds

I have a nother post about a nother problem, but on an unrelated note,  what kind of things can cause changes in speed?  i have the router connected  wirelessly to a computer right next to it ( so distance is not an issue), and most of the time it says 54 Mbps for speed, but it drops to 18, 11, or whatever every so often.  I have "excellent" under signal strength.  what would cause such a speed change?  its in a fairly cool location...

Use your wireless card to scan for other wireless networks in your proximity.
You can also use a tool like netstumbler which also shows you the channels which the other networks use.
If you find a lot of other wireless networks it is likely that you have collisions with other networks, in particular if those are running on the same channel as you do.
Moreover, devices like some cordless phones, microwaves, etc. also emit waves in the same frequencies as the wireless network.
