How to temporarily store music files outside iTunes ?

I have been searching and toying but don't seem to find "the" solution.
my 40 Gb iTunes library resides on an external drive which is running out of space and would like to keep it that size as it is the size of my iPod.
How can I remove say the whole several Gb "Classical Music" content of iTunes and store it to a different location but keep it with its structure in order to be able to re-incorporate it into iTunes later on.
My question I guess would boil down to "how to remove chunks of iTunes" in their format to rotate those chunks back and forth always keeping iTunes max load to the size of the iPod ?
many thanks for reading me and happy new year to you all
jacques

Many thanks dwb and Matt
I wanted to avoid just that.
I have been experimenting several ways to remove (mouse draging) the files to other location (like the hard drive of my eMac which has spare room) and re-inserting those files back into iTunes either via Finder, via Import function of iTunes, via drop onto the iTunes Library ..etc.. no luck to have the the structure kept and iTunes able to "see" again those files,
hence my post here
I was hoping there was a way-
However thank you for pointing to the "Playlists" which I have never needed. I am taking with great interest your advice to get familiar with their use.
So from what you are saying you can turn "on" and "off" blocs of your library that way and only feed to hungry iPod what you need.
cool
incidentally I don't know why my count of posts has dropped to 1 when I have been around here for years.
Many thanks again
cheers

  • How do I manage music files using iTunes in the iCloud?

    HW: HP laptop running win 7 and itunes 10.6.3.25; home sharing is on; itunes match is on;
iPhone 4S w/iTunes; itunes wifi sync will use the hp laptop; itunes match is on; use cellular data is on sho all music is on; auto downloads for music is on; icloud says 4.1 gb available
I have about 1000 music files on my pc
I spent 3 hours sending them all to itunes match
    now I have:
duplicate tune files on my phone
files on my pc that lost their track/artist info and now appear as Track 1 (2,3,etc)
i have listened to all of these and renamed them manually
music files that were on my phone are now missing
music files that were shipped on my pc that I never played/wanted are on my phone
In addition, I used to be able to select and play music from "music" on the phone through the radio in my car. Now, the selected music only plays through the phone speaker, while, at the same time, the radio starts playing the entire library in alphabetical order from the first song title.
    This is a nightmare.
How do I delete unwanted tunes from my iPhone? How do I get everything to match up? How do I wipe all the music from my phone and my laptop so I can just start over?
    much gratitude and many thanks.
And if anyone can tell me how to change my "name" in profile, that would be great too.

    should have mentioned:
iphone is connected via usb to pc and they are on the same wireless network
itunes on the pc occasionally freezes/loses the iphone (it disappears from the device list)/says it does not recognize the iphone
all device, app, and os updates have been run in the last week.
All of this misery started on Tuesday--i spent 3 hours on the phone with an apple tech to step me through the match process, and didn't discover all the problems until a few hours later.
    Thanks again...

  • How do I get music files into iTunes?

I am switching from a PC, and have downloaded my music files from my cloud site. I seem to be able to drag the digital files from Finder into iTunes, but not the ones I scanned in from CDs. I guess they're Windows media files. What is my next move?

Do you still have the PC (or *a* PC)?  Itunes for *Windows* will import WMA files and convert them to a supported format.  Follow the instruction here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1844
You can then copy the new files to your Mac.
This capability is not built into iTunes for Mac, so if you don't have access to a PC, you'll need a third party utility, eg:
    http://download.cnet.com/Free-WMA-to-MP3-Changer/3000-2140_4-75703803.html
(disclaimer: I'm not personally familiar with this utility).

  • How do i transfer music files from itunes to an external flash drive for the car

I would like to listen to my music from itunes in the car, how do I transfer files to a usb flash drive?

Open iTunes, go to the music library, highlight the files you want to transfer and right-click and Copy.  Minimize iTunes and right click your flash drive, Paste.  Should copy the files to the flash drive.

  • How to move my music file to iTunes library

On June 20, 2008, I burned 149 songs by the same singer into a DVD and also a CD-R. Later, I somehow lost most of these songs from my iTunes music library. Today, however, I seem to have found them, or almost all of them. I found them in Music>iTunes>iTunes Music>Annette Hanshaw>Red Hot Jazz.
How can I move these songs from where I found them to my iTunes music library?

2nd reply: As it turned out, I could do it. I just dragged the icon "Red Hot Jazz" out of the Hard Drive with my cursor into the Annette Hanshaw screen of my iTunes library. It was easy, although I did make one mistake that I'm going to have to correct. The mistake I made was that because it looked to me as if the transfer of files was being done in installments, I dragged the icon into the iTunes page many times. However, when I saw that it was going to transfer 800+ files, I realized that what I had done was simply to put several copies of each song in the iTunes library. Now I have to delete the extra copies, but I'm not complaining. Now I'm going to go after all of those song files that are scattered throughout my hard drive, and consolidate them into my iTunes library. There will probably be many extra copies, but fixing that will be a simple matter. Tedious, but simple. Thanks for your help.

  • I can burn CDs from Windows Media Player, but not from itunes.  I always get Error 2131.  How do I transfer music files from itunes to Window Media Player Library?...or convince itunes to burn a CD?

    Cannot burn CD from itunes.

The thing is, they are in the unprotected format? (
They are protected WMA from when you RIP'd them with WMP. iTunes will not read them.
Go to WMP Tools -> Rip Music.
Under Rip settings, it is set to *Windows Media Audio* and most likely *Copy protect music* is ticked. This is how it is protected.
You will need to reRIP them all from CD.

  • How do I move music files from the startup disc to iTunes in the other internal hard disk os 10.5.8?

How do I move music files from the startup disc to iTunes in the other internal hard disk os 10.5.8?
The music I want to move was in iTunes but is now just files. I had to reinstall a new iTunes and lost all my old music.
    Thank you!

That article is about using your iPod as an external hard drive, to move files from one computer to another computer.  It is not related to your question.
You can't use iTunes to move song files from iPod to computer, except for songs you purchased from the iTunes Store (and you can also re-download purchases).  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can move song files from iPod to computer.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
Once the song files are on your current computer, add them to that computer's iTunes library by dragging the files (or folder containing the files) to the iTunes window.  After confirming everything is there (and fixing the data issue you mentioned) you can sync the iPod.  You may want to do a Restore on the iPod, if it might have a data corruption issue, which will erase the iPod's hard drive, re-install the latest software, and set it to defautl settings.

  • How do I import music files from a flash drive to my iTunes library on my laptop

How can I import music files from a flash drive to my iTunes library? I put the flash drive into my laptop, selected " add file to library", selected the songs I wanted from the flash drive, and it looked like they were added as the names show under " recently added". Then I removed the flash drive from my laptop But when I select one of the songs and try to play it a message saying "the song could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"  So it seems the actual files did not transfer. What do I do? I have done this. With a cd in the past with nsomproble,.

Thank you!! This worked. It does seem there should be an easier way but this did work.
Dragging the files to "Automatically Add..." is pretty easy once you know where to look.  Just make sure iTunes is running when you do it; otherwise the files will just sit there until the next time you open iTunes.
(Interestingly, the way you originally tried to do would have worked fine except for one little detail:  you have to first go into Edit > Preferences > Advanced, and check the box for "Copy files..."  If that is not done, iTunes will reference the files on the flash drive, which of course are not accessible once the drive is removed, as you saw.)
Anyway, glad that all is now sorted.  Enjoy the music!

  • How do I move a music file in iTunes on my PC onto my iPad to add to an iMovie project?

How do I move a music file in iTunes on my PC onto my iPad to add to an iMovie project?

    CBellC-
I do not have iMovie, so I can't try this!
Run iTunes with your iPad connected to the computer, either by the USB cable or by WiFi.  Select the iPad under DEVICES in iTunes.  Click on Apps at the top of the window and scroll down to File Sharing.  If iMovie appears there, select it.  The Documents window to the right is where you transfer files to (Add) and from (Save To) the iPad.

How can i copy the music files from itunes in mp3 format to my PC

    Dr. P,
Song files are just files.  You can copy them the way you copy any other files, like photos or documents.
If any of the files are not already in MP3 format, and you wish to create MP3 versions, then you can convert them using iTunes, by following this guide:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1550
