How to test DVD burner

Plays DVD, but won't burn with iDVD. How can I test if DVD burner is working?

you could try a different burning program or just open Finder and select a file or 2 and then Right Click and select Burn, Have a CD or DSVd disc in the drive. If they get burnt to the disc it is working. If it pops up an error then more then likely the drive is failing.
You could just go out and buy any external DVD drive and it will work with your Mac. It does not have to be solded by or have the Apple name on it to work on your Mac, or any Mac.

  • How to keep dvd burn session open

When i backup my photos for storage onto a DL DVD or on any cd/dvd the burner closes the session after the burn. Are there settings that can be changed to allow a burn session to remain open so i'm not wasting storage space?

There is nothing remotely resembling a standard for multi-session DVDs. That is probably why Apple provides no option for this at all.
The other poster included a link to instructions on how to make a multi-session CD. Those instructions won't work for a DVD.

  • How To Control DVD burn speed?

I want to burn the DVD at some speed lower than the default of 8X. How can it be controlled?

    Hello Doc,
I want to burn the DVD at some speed lower than the default of 8X.
    Wise decision
You'll need to create a disk image (File > Save as Disk Image) in iDVD. The resulting .img file can then be burned with either Disk Utility or, if you have, Toast.
    hope this helps

  • How to: turn dvd burn verification OFF?

I burn DVD all the time and walk away, and come back to find the disk in verification, which cause more time than I want.
How do I turn verification off?
    thanks

I have the same question and it is regarding burning
with OS X 10.4.7, where you insert blank media, click
it open, drag files to burn onto it and hit the burn
bar at the top of the window.
It will automatically start verifying after burning.
This is probably smart, but not desired from my
    standpoint.
Once it gets to the verify phase you can click the cancel button in the progress window to stop it.

  • How to play DVD burned on to surperdrive on a DVD player?

Ok I burned a slideshow on to a DVD-R Disc,  using a Mac superdrive and can view it on my macbook air, can I view it on a DVD player?

If you’re able to view it in the DVD Player on the Mac, you’ll be able to view it in a standalone player.
If you burned it as a data DVD, you can’t.

  • Testing DVD's. How far do you go?

Just a general question on testing DVD's. What is sufficient for delivering to a client? Do you watch the whole DVD? How many different players? Is there software that will test it for you? What does everyone do?
    Just wondering...
    - Tom W.

There is never enough testing that you can do, I know I pound the heck out of the DVDs and can still miss things (this also depends on the complexity of the disc) the more players that you have the better to try them out on. And you should watch all the material on the DVD to make sure everything worked out properly in the encoding and muxing process.
DVD SP gives you some warnings, such as missing links or assets, and it is good to watch for them. Also take care to follow all the suggestions you see here for compatabilty (encoding rates, A.Pack/Dolby, etc.) Many problems can be avoided.
Another thing to try to do (and this is probably the hardest) is to step off from a project before proofing. I know this one is almost impossible with deadlines and so forth, but if you can burn a disc to look at and then wait a bit of time before looking, you may be able to catch more. Sometimes you can get just too close to what you are working on. (Along the same lines if you have someone else to look at things, they will catch things, such as typos or other elements that you have just looked at too much to see anymore. This also serves as a reality check to some degree, after sitting in front of the computer and encoders you can drive yourself crazy because you see every fault that you would love to clear up, yet no one else would ever notice.)
Some of this also depends on the scope of the project and how it is going to be used. For instance, if you are just dropping wedding footage on a DVD for someone thaat is pretty straightforward (and subject to the issues what DVD Players will properly play DVDs from computer burns), you can do it fairly quickly, check links, navigation, etc.
If it is going out for replication, have a QC run on a test disc. Though it costs some money (and even more if they catch something to redo test disks) it is better than replicating the discs.
Also Trai Forrester, for instance, offers services http://www.dvdverification.com/public/department49.cfm where he will do some testing. If you have a big project it is something to consider, especially if you have not gone through the drill before of preparing DLTs and dealing with replicators.
So all of it comes down to balancing time and the scope of the project.

  • How can i improve burning quality of dvd.looks fine in preview on idvd, but final burn quality is poor/

how can i improve burning quality of dvd.looks fine in preview on idvd, but final burn quality is poor.

Had same problem with iPhoto pictures and poor burn quality. Went back to original picture file and dragged images into idvd project from there. Set encoding at professional quality and burned at slowest speed. Got very good result with high quality slideshow when played on TV.
Also tried Old Toad's Aug 30, 2011 advice to get a slideshow into iDVD with transitions, music, etc. from iPhoto.
Again the quaility of the burned CD was very good.

How do I export a 98 min video edited in FCP 7 to IDVD for single disc DVD burning?

Your current settings should match the source material in your timeline. Though, it probably doens't matter what it is as long as your settings are not for a highly compressed format like h.264 or mpeg2.
iDVD should take any all "I" frame format and encode it. (All I frame formats include DV, DVCProHD, ProRes).

  • How to identify which applicarion is using the DVD burner?

How to identify which applicarion is using the DVD burner? Ot is not allow me to burn the DVDs genetrated in the Final Cut 7

I think you'll find that the application is Final Cut Pro...  the message is bug.  I get a similar message when disconnecting external drives after using them with FCP (even when the project is no longer loaded.)
As I mentioned above, the accepted workflow is to export the sequence to one of your hard drives using the Export>QuickTime Movie path with Settings:Current Settings and Make Movie Self-Contained checked like this:
This gets you a high quality "master copy" which you open in Compressor for transcoding. You should use the DVD: Best Quality setting for the duration of your movie.
this gets you the high quality MPEG-2 and AC-3 files for DVD Studio Pro authoring.
If you've never used DVD Studio Pro before, you can use iDVD instead. For iDVD, you just drag and drop your "master" on iDVD and it takes it from there. Both make a very professional product.
    hope this helps.

  • How to burn iDVD with no DVD burner..

Hi - I have a new MacBook but foolishly didn't buy the one with the DVD burning capability. I have created a nice slideshow with pics and music, nice transitions, etc. in iDVD which I want to be able to play in a DVD player on the TV, but can not burn it as I have no superdrive. Can you think of a way around this, or other software I can use to create the same slideshow and burn to a CD and play on the TV? Thanks.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Your DVD player attached to the TV will probably be looking for a DVD, unless it will also play video CD's. One option is to buy yourself an external DVD recorder. You can scan the discussions to find ones that work with macs (not all specify that they will work with macs). For example, OWC has 3 external recorders from $80 to $120 at http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/ . If you follow the path I've seen others follow, once you find out how easy it is to create various materials for DVD's, you'd probably get your monies worth from an external DVD burner.
Another option would be to hook your computer directly to your TV, if the TV will allow it. Many newer LCD/plasma TV's allow for computer hookup.

  • How to convert MP4 movie to dvd burn ready disc image?

I have a 15 minute MP4 movie (640x480, non-copy protected) that I'd like to save as a dvd burn-ready disc image. (This was a photo slideshow that a friend made into a movie on OneTrue Media. I don't want to add anything else to it, no chapters, additional files etc -- just save as a disc image that can be posted on my idisk public site for a few friends to download and burn to dvd if they wish). How can I do this the easiest way with iDVD?

    Welcome to the forums.
You're almost there. Pull the video into iDVD (mp4 isn't the best format for DVD conversion but it should work) and use the Save As Disc Image command to create your image file (set preferences to Best Performance first).
