How to TimeMachine backup to firewire disk with secure sparsebundle

Hi.  I'm on the road a lot and I'd like to be able to carry a backup with my.  I understand that Time Machine backups up are not secure, so I've tried to create a secure image to backup to, but I can't get it to work.
1. I created a password-protected sparsebundle image on a firewire/USB drive calle "road_backup.sparseimage"
2. I've confirmed that I can write/read to this area and that it is password protected.
Problem is that when I go to Time Machine preferences and select the backup disk it only gives me the option of the firewire/USB disk - not the secure image.
I there any way to do what I want to do - either by password protecting the whole disk or making Time Machine write to the sparsebunde?
In know that I can vault the whole disk - but I'd rather not do this.
OS is 10.6.8
Macbook Pro 13"
Intel
Thanks in advance for any help that you can give me.

Remember what I said earlier? ""The tricky parts... Then install your wanted version of Mac OS 9""...
Install is a key word here.
Launch your latest Mac OS 9 CD and run the Installer targeting the mounted image. I prefer to do a minimum universal install from within the installer. Uncheck items of no use. If your CD is an older version of Mac OS 9, run the following version of an updater. Same can be done to update your utilities so long as there is a updater available for the utility.

Bootable CDs normally contain a copy protected System Folder that is equivalent to fooling around with mother nature. It unfortunately leaves you with many CD cake boxes of coasters in the process.

  • How can I erase my hard disk with OS X 10.8.2?

How can I erase my hard disk with OS X 10.8.2?

If you want to erase the hard disk and reinstall OS X, follow these steps:
    1. Back up your data to an external disk if you don't want to lose everything. When you erase a hard disk, everything is deleted.
    2. Press Command and R keys while your Mac is starting to start into OS X Recovery, and open Disk Utility.
    3. Select Macintosh HD on the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk.
    4. After erasing the disk, close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X, so OS X will be installed with factory settings.
Don't forget to install iLife applications after the installation, if you need them. They come in the Applications DVD (if your Mac came with Snow Leopard or older), or open App Store > Purchases and download them

  • How can i backup files in Disk utilities, files from HD to exHD?

I'm having some issue with my Macbook Pro, it turns to be slow and lag. I would like to backup my data and format it, but i could log into it.
i can only enter Mac OS X Utilities.

That's a signal that the hard disk is damaged. On OS X Utilities, you can try to make a clone of the hard disk with Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and go to Restore tab.
Drag an external disk to Destination box and press Restore.
If it doesn't work, you can use Target Disk Mode to connect your Mac to another one using a FireWire cable and transfer all your files. If not, use DiskWarrior to recover data. Finally, take the Mac to an Apple Store

  • How to boot up from firewire disk?

    Hi everyone,
I just bought a 250Gb Lacie D2 triple interface external hard drive to go with my 15" 1.25ghz G4 powerbook.
I partitioned the External drive into two volumes, one of which I will reserve exclusively for backing up my entire Powerbook hard drive.
I used the software (Silverkeeper) that came with the Lacie disk to copy the powerbook hard drive onto the Lacie disk. When I commenced the copying, a dialog box asked me if I wanted to make the copy 'bootable' I clicked yes.
Now for my question..... How do I boot up from the copy???
I had assumed that if I switched off the powerbook & then re-started it, (with the Lacie disk connected... Firewire 800) that I would then be given the option of booting from either the Powerbook hard drive OR the Lacie hard drive. Not so.... Powerbook booted up as per normal, having 'recognised' the Lacie disk & placed it's icons on my desktop.
Obviously there is a simple step I am unaware of, probably holding down a combination of keys whilst re-booting???
So....How do I boot up from the copy?
    regards
    Ian

Well to be accurate it is not at all "permanent" - a better and more usefully accurate term would be persistent.
If you are updating the OS on it you might want it to persist through reboots vs using the very time consuming Option key method each time.
To go back to the original boot disk or any other one just go to preferences and select the one you want again. Much faster.

  • Backup to external disk with disk utility

    Hello,
I'm looking to back up a iMac with 10.3.9 to an external usb disk drive. Unfortunately, I'm not having much success. I boot to the install disk, then pick "disk utility", and go to the restore page. Then I drag my Mac HD on the source, which works fine, but I'm not able to get the destination correct. Here's the deal with the disk though. I have three partitions on it. I have a 1st partition which is fat32; the second is ext3 where I have Ubuntu; the 3rd is a linux swap partition.
I was hoping that I could save to the fat32 partition without clobbering the data there, but I wasn't even able to try it, because Disk Utility came back with an "error 19". I'm not sure what that is, but I assumed that Disk Utility doesn't play with fat32. So I then used Gparted to create an empty 4th partition with HFS+ format. I thought that that would work, but while Disk Utility "sees" that partition (it shows up on the left side, although without the correct partition name), it will not let me drag it to the restore->destination box.
So, couple of questions. Does anyone know if:
    1) Does the destination of the Disk Utility backup have to be the first partition on the external disk?
    2) Does the destination partition have to be HFS+?
    Thanks.

I've got 3 partitions on a 500gb external drive plus the one internal hard drive on my iBook. I always make sure I keep a backup of both Leopard and Panther OSX. So if I have Panther on the internal HD then I have only one copy of Panther and two leopard copies on the externa HD. The mac doesn't seem to care what order the partitions are in since it treats each partition as a separate drive.
Yes, the destination has to be hfs+ but you can get disktuil to format the partition which will only format that partition and will not affect any other partition on the drive. Be careful to select the proper partition!
The recommended procedure is to format as journalled hfs+ (diskutil can do this) because diskutil will sometimes make an unbootable backup if you only erase the partition instead of formatting the paritition. That was the mistake I made and found the problem listed in carbon copy cloner's files. The problem is that for some reason, firewire external drives are not always bootable because of the issue OSX has with those types of drives. The only solution was to format the partition as hfs+ and try restoring from your boot drive to the newly formatted hfs+ partition. Worked for me.
As far as I know, Panther OS can't format a drive/partition as a windows drive. Leopard OSX will though and has no issues with formatting flashdrives or any other drives or partitions as microsoft windows DOS format. It can also write/read from windows formatted drives but Panther OSX can't as far as I know.
Oops. I guess I'm wrong. This from the diskutil help files...
You can use Disk Utility to format an *entire disk* in Windows (MS-DOS) format, but *you cannot format a single disk partition in Windows format.*
WARNING: To prepare a disk in Windows format, you must erase the entire disk. Be sure to copy all the information on that disk before you erase it.

  • How can I make a bootable disk with some third party applications to use?

My Macbook's performance has slowed WAY down and I want to try running a couple of different tools on it to optimize it.
Thing is, some if not all of them require you to boot from a different disk, and since I got them online, I don't have bootable CDs for them.
The OS X install disk doesn't allow you to access files on your HD and neither does DiskWarrior's DVD, so is there any way at all to make a bootable CD which will show me a finder window with the tools I need or anything like that?
I KNOW that BootCD exists for older versions of mac, and frustratingly that's the only answer I have come across online despite the fact that it doesn't work for Tiger.
Please help, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Argh, posted this in the wrong section, AND I figured out how to do it myself anyway...
Could a mod please close this? Apologies to everyone for making a balls of this

  • How should I backup a hfs  drive with rsync from ubuntu?

    Hi
I have to backup a hfs+ drive from a ubuntu machine using rsync on ubuntu (i.e., NOT the mac-rsync).
Issues: Apparently ubuntu can handle hfs+ devices only if journaling is disabled. My target device will then be a hfs+ device with journaling disabled.
The source hfs+ device on the mac however has journaling enabled: It hosts the iphoto-library among other things.
Questions: Can I backup the contents of the source device onto the target even if this one has journaling enabled? The goal of course is to be able
to copy back the iphoto-library in usable form, in case of problems with the source disk.
Is is mandatory that the target is hfs+ (journaled or not) only for the purpose of backup of iphoto-library?
If the above is possible, what should I tell to rsync so that the journaling files are not transferred from source to target? Any other files
                     that I should avoid transferring?

No time machine won't backup a fat32 drive.
    Chronosync will:
    http://www.econtechnologies.com/
Disk Utility can back a fat32 drive up to a disk image.
The command line utility rsync will do it (so will other
Terminal based utilities, such as cp and ditto).
the Mac backup utility for windows "WinClone win do it.
You can create a sparse image, format it fat32 and use it to backup windows data on.

  • How to configure backup parallel in SAP with oracle database?

    Dear SAP,
We need your suggestion on oracle database backup parallel using brbackup, our SAP system run on:
OS: UNIX - SUN Solaris SPARC 10
    SAP: ECC 6.0 SR3
    Database: Oracle 10.2.0.4
Our production database are growing rapidly, estimate growing is 2GB/days. Right now we backup our Production using one tape that estimated time to online backup is 4-5hours.
In there future, if we stayed this configuration. It will take long time to backup and restore it's not applicable. That's why we are planning to add more tapes during backup (4 tape parallel).
I read from help.sap, that we can configure this on $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/init<SID>.sap. in parameter:
    compress = harware
    backup_dev_type = tape
    tape_address = (tape1, tape2, tape3, tape4)
    tape_address_rew = (tape1, tape2, tape3, tape4)

    My question,
If we want to backup parallel using 4 tapes, is this configuration that we need to do (init<SID>.sap) from sap side (DB13)?
    Thanks and Best Regards,

    Dear Mark,
Thanks for your help. actually I have one more question:
How do I restore my backup form this 4 tapes, if I'm using parallel backup?
Will the command same like I restore form 1 tape:
    example:
    brrestore u2013b beczqlnk.ant u2013m full
    brrestore u2013a 5371-5372=/oracle/<SID>/oraarch/
Below are the paramter that I will configure:
    - tape_address = /dev/rmt/0cbn
    - compress = hardware
    - backup_dev_type = tape
    - exec_parallel = 4
    - tape_size = 1600000
    - tape_address = (dev/rmt/0mn, /dev/rmt/1mn, ..)
    - tape_address_rew = (dev/rmt/0m, /dev/rmt/1m, ..)
Appreciate you help and suggestion on this.
    Dear Venkat,
    thanks for your suggestion

  • How do I backup to time machine with a new internal hard drive?

My Macbook Pro's hard drive got corrupted about a year ago so I had to get the hard drive completely replaced. However, I wanted to start backing up my data to time machine so if the same situation were to reoccur, I would be better prepared. For some reason Time Machine does not recognize the new internal hard drive of the computer as it is supposed to. Could someone please help? thank you in advanced
    Current OS: OS X 10.8.4

That error message is saying that it is attempting to setup a Time Capsule for Time Machine to backup your data on.
Do you have a Time Capsule?
Do you have an external Disk Drive?
You can do a backup to the internal disk drive. It is worthless to do that.

  • HT1175 How do I backup to an older machine's sparsebundle?

I have done a full restore to a new machine, which has worked...and I am told there should be an option to set to previous backups (to continue backing up to the same history).
According to a Macworld article, when I connect to my Time Capsule for backing up the first time with the new machine I should get an option to "create new backup" or "inherit backup history".  I can't get to this option and my Time Capsule doesn't have enough room for a new backup.  Obviously I don't want to delete the historic sparsebundle to make room.
    What have I done wrong?
    Thnx

Unfortunately, I had already worked through these two sites before posting the issue.  I even took my Macbook and Time Capsule into the local Genius bar.  They were not particularly familiar with the expectation and after running around in constant circles of the obvious options in system preferences etc.. concluded they did not know how to find the option "inherit backup history".
I have followed one other discussion (on the Macworld site) which seems to get very close to addressing the issue, but no final answers.
I would have thought someone would know how Lion and Time Machine is supposed to work....:(

  • How to apply Computer Configuration to users with Security Filtering?

I have a gpo that contains both user and computer settings.  In order to test it, I want to link it to an OU that contains users and their computers, but I want to use Security Filtering to apply it only to certain users (I don't have their computer
    names).
Is there a way to filter it to only certain users without losing the computer settings?

    > Is there a way to filter it to only certain users without losing the

Computers look for computer settings in a GPO they have access to.
Users look for user settings in a GPO they have access to.
SO you might simply remove "Authenticated Users" (which includes both
computers and users) from security filtering. Then add "Domain
computers" which gives all computers access to computer settings, and
add the users in question, which gives THESE users access to user settings.
