How to track a PDF download as a webpage hit?

My website provides people with free information via about 50 PDF downloads. although I have excellent tracking software (Extreme Tracking) on each HTML page, I have absolutely no idea how many PDFs are being downloaded or from which region of the world they are being downloaded. Therefore I have no clear idea of visitor traffic to the site. Has anyone got a fix to this problem? Surely ACROBAT experts can find a way to tag a PDF with a small section of HTML in order to allow the page to be tracked as a hit? Any ideas welcome! Steppegold in Mongolia

I was hoping beyond hope that a PDF could be tracked. Well the first person to come up with a solution is going to make billions $$$ that's for sure. Seems to me that if a top 3 or 4 lines of normal but tiny text were to be inserted in the top of the PDF, then clever software in a bot/spider might be able to convert this instantaneously into HTML and so the tracker code would then be activated. It really is worth someone spending time and $$ to solve this.

want to distribute a paid app. I believe the AIR marketplace also offers
some data but I believe it's very limited.
Another option which I really like is App Analytics <http://bit.ly/9SCmMK>.
You can use that or something like Google Analytics if you're going to
handle your own distribution...

I use feed burner - but I would not recommend replacing your current feed publicly with the feedburner feed.
If you are going to use feedburner - use the redirect method. This allows you to maintain control of your feed name. The last thing you want to do is start putting out multiple feed URL's in the directories - IMHO

Here is a link to a tutorial that tells you how to do the redirect method.
Even feedburner recommends using the redirect method if you already have a public feed.
Again note - if you have a lot of downloads from your site - feedburner will not be able to track that - they only track subscribers to your feed and not downloads.
Finally never look at raw hits to your XML file it tells you nothing - as many subscribers aggregators will ping your XML file once an hour and others may only hit you once a day. So unless you want to parse the data for unique IP pings the number will be really misleading. Also some people still have an old version of iPodderX that was causing many pings an hour and driving raw stats numbers through the roof.

I've just purchased a game in the app store, but it's been a bit weird as I had to confirm some details, and now I can't actually work out whether the game is downloading or whatever. Can anyone advise me as to how I can see the progress of the download or whatever?

In the Mac App Store you can go in Purchases in the top of the window.
If you see “Installed” you can find it in your Applications folder.
If it's not installed you will see a progress bar with the time remaining.

Track PDF Downloads without having to click a link - external website

We want to track how many people download a particular document (pdf) on our external facing publishing website. The PDF url is contained within a paper-based invoice they receive in the mail. They then type in the URL to download the PDF brochure.
Therefore, they are not clicking a link anywhere on the website but going directly to the PDF.
We use Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager on our external website but they only track link clicks and not direct downloads of PDFs.
Is there any way to find out how many times a PDF is downloaded directly?

Sure, check out the iis log files or write some code that does that and counts the specific pdf downloads. I've written something that reads iis log files, maybe it can inspire you:

Nobody could possibly think anyone would ask for help without first trying to fix the issue oneself. Or maybe you do. I have opened the file and looked under security. I have changed it to owner-notebook (which is what the techs called me) and clicked accept but geepers it didn't work.
Maybe someone else has an idea.

On your web page select the text ot the object you want to link the pdf-file to.
Then open the Inspector window (View -> Show Inspector or alt-cmd-I) and open the Hyperlink tab (marked by the blue arrow).
Select "enable as Hyper link" and set the "Link to" selector to "a file".
In the File chooser select your pdf-file.
If your file is large, you might set the selector to "an external link". Then you enter the URL and it is would be your responsebility to upload the file to its site.

How do I prevent automatic downloading of .pdf files?

I've noticed previous queries (from 2008 and 2009) asking how to prevent Safari or perhaps Adobe Reader from automatically downloading .pdf files when they open them.
I haven't had this problem recently until today. Previously, I would click a link and the .pdf file would open in a separate window. If I wanted to download the file I would have to select the download icon from the pop-up icons at the bottom of the page.
Today when I click a link to a .pdf file, the file automatically downloads to my Download folder. Adobe Reader is opening the file. In its Internet Preferences, I deselected "Display PDF in browser using. . ." and "Allow speculative downloading. . ." to no effect.
How can I get automatic downloading to stop?
I also selected a .pdf file, pressed Command-I, and in the Open With section of the pane, tried changing from Adobe Reader to Preview and then Safari to get the automatic downloading to stop, but neither choice produced the desired effect.

If they did, and Adobe Reader is strong-arming its way to causing all PDF files to download, try removing Reader and give it a test with no Reader-assist. Oh, I'm not trying to get you to give up on Reader. You can copy Reader to an ext. HDD for safe-keeping, and then trash it from the internal HDD, and empty the trash. Then test Safari. If Safari works correctly without Reader, get your answer from Adobe.com
maxintaft: PDF files cannot be editied easily even on your HDD, mush less in a browser window. Whatever it is you are typing in (or have been typing in previously), it is not a PDF file, so your issue needs a new question, or contact the school site webmaster for help.

since upgrading to ios8 when I want to download a pdf, from safari, the default app it tries to download to is itunesU instead of iBooks. it does come up with other options, including iBooks, but you have to find iBooks from the list. on ios7 it would default to iBooks.

We have been working on identifying the best way on how to track changes in a hyperion application in regards to the SOX control.
The following areas have been identified as the main areas of an application where the changes are to be tracked:
Monthly data load from ODI
Calculation of data
Metadats change
Formula edit
Changes to reports
Changes to security
Can anybody please suggest the best ways to do this? Has anyone experienced this issue before?
Somebody suggested that there is hyperion auditing available.
Is there any other software that is available that can do this or just documenting the changes would be the best option?
