How to transfer a single Application from an old Time Machine backup

Hi
My old G5 unexpectedly died so i picked up a new iMac. When I set it up I used migration assistant to transfer everything but was told by a Genius not to "check" applications as I would need to re-install any apps that used a key anyway and there may be issues with snow leopard.
Turns out the new machine didn't have Snow Leopard after all and the one key application that I forgot to account for was my Palm Desktop. This of course has all of my addresses etc. and was far more up to date then the handheld which I haven't used in a couple years.
Is there any way to selectively retrieve this application from the Time machine backup for my old G5? I would even be happy if I could just get the data but I have no idea where to even look for it.
Thoughts?
Thanks to any caring sole who thinks they can help

This is what I would do, if you absolutely had to run the old Palm Desktop app on your new iMac.
The last version of Palm Desktop appears to still be available from palm.com
http://kb.palm.com/wps/portal/kb/common/article/33219_en.html
Note: This is probably an old PowerPC application, so your Intel iMac will be using Rosetta to run it. That is fine, but a window letting you know may pop up if it is the first PowerPC app you have run.
Hopefully, the installer and application will work properly on a new Mac with Leopard or Snow Leopard.
When it sets up the new user, it should create a folder in your user home folder somewhere. I do not know where this will be, but I would look in places like
<user home folder>/Library/
<user home folder>/Library/Application Support/
<user home folder>/Documents/
for a folder with Palm in the name.
If you can find that folder, note where it is located. Connect the Time Machine backup drive from the G5. In Finder, go into the backup folder to the latest date/time folder. You should be able to navigate to that same location and find that same +Palm data+ folder. First, just copy it over to the iMac's Desktop. Once you have it on the iMac, the idea here (with Palm Desktop NOT running) is to replace the new folder it created with the one from the old iMac. When you run Palm Desktop, hopefully, it will use your old data from the iMac G5.
I have not done this myself for Palm Desktop, but this technique works in other similar situations.

  • How can I restore a single image from an aperture time machine backup, do I have to restore the entire library? that does not make sense

I hope there has been found a more efficiant solution for this,  how can I restore a single image from an aperture time machine backup, I really hope I don't have to restore the entire library? that does not make sense
    any suggestions?

Did you try browsing your backups in the Finder ?  That is, do not go and "Enter Time Machine".  Instead, navigate to your Time Machine backup via Finder and then manually go to the time period (by folder name) you are looking for ... when you find your Aperture library you can then "Show Package Contents" and find the Master you are looking for.

  • How do I reinstall Garageband from an old Time Machine Backup?

I recently had a lot of trouble with my computer crashing, so I did a time machine back up, and then wiped the computer. I figured out that it was a piece of software causing the crashing, so instead of restoring my computer, I just started from scratch. I have been slowly bringing my important files back and reinstalling some of the software. I didn't want to put everything back on here because it was slowing it down. I needed to use Garageband the other day, but obviously it was no longer on my computer. The Garageband I had originally came on the computer when I bought it, so I don't have an install disc, and it was prior to when Garageband was put on the App Store, so I can't redownload it. Is there a way to drag it from my old time machine (which no longer recongnizes this computer since I didn't want everything back on here)? I tried just dragging the app itself but it said is was missing loops and quit itself. I had the same problem with iPhoto but dragging it worked just fine.

If GarageBAnd came preinstalled, before it was sold at the AppStore, it should be on the system install disks that came with your Mac. Check, if you did not receive two CDs, one with the installer for the system, and one with applications. Use this application install disk to restore GarageBand.

You can restore the GarageBand application this way, but you will also need to restore the libraries.
hat is easier done by running the installer.
    Copy everything in the folders
         /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/
    and all missing items from
          /Library/Audio
to the corresponding folders on your new harddrive.
Then reboot and try, if you can launch GB again.

  • How do I restore a system from an older time machine backup?

How can I restore my full system from a time machine backup using a "snapshot in time" older than the most recent time machine backup?
For context: I am doing work on my machine that required making a full backup (in time machine), working on the computer, then doing a full restore. Unfortunately, when I briefly connected the my external disk during step 2, time machine started and added a "newer" backup than the one I need to restore. Any advice?
    Thanks!

  • A question about restoring from an old Time Machine backup

My computer has been acting very slow and freezing frequently lately.  The spotlight background processess keep hogging the processor, and
It keeps getting catalog b-Tree corruption.  I've already done one complete reformat of my drive and a restore from a time machine backup hoping it would fix things, and that didn't work.
I tried a complete reinstall and used the migration assistant to move all my files and settings from my time machine back over to it.
That worked for about a week, then had b-Tree corruption that could only be fixed with disk warrior.
I was suspecting a hardware problem, but I have done thourogh tests of my Ram with memtest from single user mode, and a disk surface scan with Tech Tool Deluxe.  Everything checks out.
I am thinking there is some corrupt system file or setting that is getting reinstalled from my Time machine backup that is messing things up.
This all is a leadup to my question:
I would like to try restoring from a much older Time Machine back up (6 months ago or so before I started experiencing problems).
If I do that, can I still use Time Machine to restore individual files and directories from later backups?
I'd like my system settings and applications to be from six months ago, but my desktop files and documents to be from my most recent backup.
    Thanks,
    -Matt

Yeah, I usually check the FAQs before posting a question.
They do talk about how to restore from an older back up, but not about what happens to your newer files once you have done it.  They also talk about accessing files from another computer's time machine backup, but its not clear if that would work on a different fork of the same machine.
I may just have to learn from experience, but I don't want to risk losing any data.
I do recommend time machine though.  Its saved me several times.
If anyone else has experience with this let me know.
    Thanks,
    -Matt

  • How do I transfer back up data from my old time capsule to my new one easily.

How do I transfer back up data from my old time capsule to my new one easily.

Before you do this, do you really need all of the old backups that go back many weeks and months?  Most us only ever need to go back a week or two to pick up a file that was accidentally deleted, but that's about it.
Sure, It is tough to think about deleting all the old backups, so a suggestion would be to keep the old Time Capsule around for a month or two....just in case....but start new backups on the new Time Capsule.  Once you have a month or two of backup history on the new Time Capsule, then you might decide to erase the old Time Capsule and sell it....or just keep it around as a spare hard drive.
I've tranferred backups a few times in the past, and used up a lot of space on the "new" Time Capsule to do it, and have found that it is far more trouble than it is worth.
    But, you may disagree.

I'm trying a full restore in Lion, but it won't. States that there isn't enough space on the Mac HD. How do I restore everything from a recent Time Machine Backup?

Thanks but I think it has something to do with the 'restore'. in the newest iTunes 11, when I click on the tab "iphone", it redirects me to the "welcome to your new iphone" page and asks about doing a 'restore'. I already did a 'restore', but it went to the original factory settings and I want to 'restore' to my lastest back up as of April 12. When I choose that option, it says my iphone doesn't have enough space. I don't know how much I need to delete in order to make it work. I've deleted lots, but it only has 4.1 GB available. I'm not sure why this isn't enough to do a 'restore'. I don't want to delete all my photos and videos, but maybe I will have to?...7.7GB is used up for that. I can't sync or do ANYTHING...

  • Restore Files From an Old Time Machine Disk

Please forgive and send me a link if someone has already answered this but I need to restore files from an old Time Machine Volume to my current desktop.
    How do I do this?

control-click on TM in the dock and choose "browse other TM disks". choose your old TM backup to browse and restore what you need. also, you can always open your TM drive in finder and copy what you need directly via finder.

  • Is there a way to get my photos off an old time machine backup from an external hard drive?

Is there a way to get my photos off an old time machine backup from an external hard drive?

You will have to connect the Time Machine HDD and click on the Icon.  You will see one folder called Backups.backupdb.  Click on that and you will have to continue until you find the home folder.  The iPhoto library (where the pictures are, not the application) will probably be in your pictures folder.  You will have to drag that to your desk top.  Then you will have access to individual images.
    Ciao.

  • Accessing Old Time Machine Backup From a New Account

I have had problems with my old Account and decided to create a new Account. I can "see" the old Time Machine backup lists from the new Account, but can't open or restore them to the new Account. I get the message that I do not have sufficient privileges although I set the new Account up with Administrator privleges.

You should have used Setup Assistant, not Migration Assistant, to transfer your data. I suggest you start over by booting into Recovery, erasing the startup volume, and installing OS X. When you reboot, Setup Assistant will start automatically. Follow the prompt to import data from a Time Machine snapshot. The backup history will then be inherited. The first backup will still be a full one; that can't be avoided.

  • I just got a new pc running windows 7 and don't know how to transfer my itunes library from my old computer using windows xp

i just got a new pc running windows 7 and cannot get my i tunes library from my old windows xp i have an ipad, ipod nano .ipod touch ,will any of these do it? My library is one i downloaded from cds not purchased thanks'

Iv just got a macbook pro today, and I don't know how to transfer my itunes library from my imac..
the simplest way, assuming all your media files are in the default location, would be to connect the two Macs with a firewire cable, boot the source Mac in Target Disk Mode, and copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) from <MacintoshHD>/users/yourname/music on the source to <MacintoshHD>/users/yourname/music on the target (overwriting the iTunes folder in place there).
My sister is having my old imac, so I also need to then clear the itunes on the imac for her.
just a create a new admin user account for her on the iMac.

  • I need to find out how to transfer all the music from my old IPOD to my new IPOD.  Not all of my music was purchased on ITUNES.

I need to find out how to transfer all my music from my original IPOD nano to my new IPOD nano.   I want to keep both and not all of my music was purchased on ITUNES.  Please help!

Your music should be in your iTunes library, that is how it gets synced to the iPod. If that music is not present in the iTunes library, you will need to get a 3rd party software for the computer to get the music off the original iPod and then move it to the iTunes library to be able to sync it to the new iPod. • How do I get back iphone app information from a DELETED Time Machine Backup disk

    Hi People,
    here is what happened:
I have been using an iPhone App (Audio Memos Free - The Voice Recorder) to record song ideas (I am a songwriter). I have been using it for years.
I backed up my iphone to itunes, and backed up my mac on Time Machine. After a month or so I did a fresh OSX install on my mac, copied all of my files back from Time Machine into my mac, and tried to set up Time Machine. I was not able to do so, so I had to format the Time Machine Backup disk and doing a "fresh" mac Time Machine Backup.
After a week or so, my iphone asks me something like "you do not possess the rights for one or more applications". do not know what i did, but after 1 minute my iPhone was wiped out of all my apps and app contents. I had also the icloud app sync, so i did not worry, recovered from icloud notes, contacts, and all other things. so i did another backup to itunes.
Now i discover icloud did not recover or save the "Audio Memos Free" app content. I know the data are hidden into the Time machine Backup HD, but i do not know where to search for the itunes backup in it.
I know it is in library, but library won't show up.
Any help would be much appreciated.
PS there is a chance that, even without a data recovery, my latest itunes backup was containing these songs, but i do not know how to fish that out of the Time machine drive.
    Thank you in advance.
