How to transfer an iTunes library from a broken computer?

Hello,
Can you transfer an iTunes library from a PC that no longer works?  I have accessed my iTunes account on my partner's computer but there is no library.  I have found some recently purchased songs that I bought on my iPad, bit have many more songs on the PC.
thank you!

Put its internal drive in an enclosure and transfer the library over, either through the Setup Assistant or by drag-copying it; if you choose to drag-copy the library, you'll either need to put it in the Music folder of your home folder or launch iTunes with the Option key held down and choose it.

Iv just got a macbook pro today, and I don't know how to transfer my itunes library from my imac..
the simplest way, assuming all your media files are in the default location, would be to connect the two Macs with a firewire cable, boot the source Mac in Target Disk Mode, and copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) from <MacintoshHD>/users/yourname/music on the source to <MacintoshHD>/users/yourname/music on the target (overwriting the iTunes folder in place there).
My sister is having my old imac, so I also need to then clear the itunes on the imac for her.
just a create a new admin user account for her on the iMac.

  • How do I transfer my iTunes library from my old computer to my MacBook Pro?

How do I transfer my iTunes library from my old computer to my MacBook Pro?

Just copy the entire Music folder from the old Mac to the new Mac, then click on the folder and Get Info and change the permisisons and click the spoke to "apply to enclosed items"
Ideally it's best to use the same user name on the new machine, this way all your iTunes playlists work and there is no need to change permissions.
You can create the same named user by creating another account in System Preferences >accounts
If the old computer is a PC then just copy the old Music folder to the Mac onto the desktop, then use iTunes to import the music files.
If the old comptuer is dead, then you can extract the hard drive(if it's still working) and use a IDE/SATA to USB adapter cable to access the internal drive.
Mac's should be able to read NTFS format of PC's, just not write to it. But if it's not working there is software to install to allow the Mac to read that NTFS drive format, just search online.

How do I retrieve my iTunes library from a broken computer onto another computer?? I've clicked on home sharing and also authorized the new computer to my account but still nothing!

It would help if you would describe what a 'broken' computer is. Did a truck run over it? Does it just not turn on? etc.

  • How can I Transfer my iTunes Library from my old computer to my new?

I just bought a new MacBook Pro (my first Mac) and I am trying to figure out how I can get my library from my iTunes off of my old computer onto my new one?  I thought that it was saved by accounts, so when I signed into my iTunes on my new MacBook, all of the songs would be there or automatically transfer into it.  This did not happen.  Is there a way to do this?  I want all my music and movies back!
    Thank you.

  • How to transfer my iTunes Library from a Mac to a PC and keep all the Metadata?

I need to transfer my music library from my macbook to a desktop PC running Windows 7. I have tried using Home Sharing as well as transfering the whole iTunes folder over using an external hard drive. Neither attempt kept all my metadata. Is there any way to recreate my library on a Windows machine and keep the metadata?

Moving a library: Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its sub-folders and files) intact to the other drive.  Hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) and open iTunes.  At the prompt to create or choose a library choose the copied iTunes folder.
If this is to a new computer and you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

  • How to transfer my itunes library to a new computer

How to transfer my existing itunes library to a new laptop?

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have iOS devices and haven't moved your contacts and calendar items across then you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

  • I am trying to transfer my Itunes library from my old computer to my new computer, why is this such a difficult task?

I am trying to get my new computer up and running.  When I tried to transfer my itunes library to the itunes on the new computer, I lost most of the music.  Anyone have a easy way to make the transfer?

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168
Windows users see tip at: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18879381
2011 Transferring your iTunes library - http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive/  - An article with good background information, particularly if you are not sure your media files are all grouped for quick  solution above. Unfortunately it uses the single term "transferring library" for two very different moves; relocating just your media (not recommended unless you really need this configuration) and relocating media+database (really your whole "library").  Make sure you understand the difference before electing to move only media.
If you put it in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

  • How to transfer an iTunes library from an iPhone to a new Macbook Air

I just received a new macbook air and I would like to transfer the music from my iPhone to my new laptop. My old laptop that contained my itunes library is dead so I don't know how to get the music from my iPhone onto my new computer.

Is the music you want on your new Mac all purchased music via iTunes?
If so, then you can log into the iTunes Store on your Mac, and then on the right side, click on Purchased under Quick Links. Then click on All Songs, and Not on This Computer. You will see all of your purchased iTunes music listed with a little cloud next to each song. You can download songs individually, or go to the bottom and click on Download All.

  • How to transfer my iTunes library from a hard disc to new computer?

Could anybody help me with this issue? I've tried everything I could without any succes...
My computer where I had my iTunes library (complete with many info and ratings) crashed and I lost all my archives. Luckly I had a copy of everything in an external hard disc. My iPod works fine with all the songs from that library. I bought a new computer, but now I cannot transfer the data of the library from the hard disc to the new computer.
I'd really appreciate if somebody could help me...
    Many thanks, Rui

Great! Very simple actually (once you know). The library is now corrected listed on iTunes, with my original playlists and the ratings.
But now how do I bring the music files? I've tried to import them from the hard disk, but iTunes didn't synchronize with the ones listed on the library, so there are duplicates of all songs and the ones I can play are not the ones on my playlists and with the ratings.
Do you have another brilliant solution?
    Thanks in advance

  • How to transfer my ITunes library from External Hard Drive to Mac Book Pro

I recently had an issue with my Mac Book(OS X Yosemite)  Had to take it to the store and they fixed it (replaced graphics mother board or something like that) Before that  I backed up the whole laptop on an external hard drive. When I connect the external hard drive I can open all my files, not sure how to transfer it, I see the External hard drive and can drag it but where do i drag it because on my Mac Book I can't  find Music. Should I drag it to the desktop and then drag it to the music when I disconnect the external ? Thanks

Choose Home from the Finder's Go menu, double-click the Music item, and drag it there.
