How to transfer files and playlists from separate drives

I have my iTunes library on an external hard drive, but the iTunes is on the old G3 iMac.
I want to transfer the music files and the iTunes prefs (eg playlists) to a newer laptop.
Both the iMac and the hard drive have firewire connections.
How do I go about doing this?

I would probably try using the migration assistant utility. Go to Applications > Utilities > Migration Assistant. Otherwise, it might work to simply copy the iTunes folder on your old mac to the new one but I'm not sure about this.

Correction to my last post (in bold): I'll try to explain what I did originally, not knowing everything that would be required to transfer, so you can better understand my situation. Just before my first computer died I saved my Music folder containing iTunes, Library, and Playlists folders to an external drive, so I no longer have programs, sub-folders or other information rooted in my first computer. I then downloaded iTunes to my second computer (Dell Vostro 1520, WindowsXP). I then dragged my Music folder from the external drive to iTunes 11.1.5.5 music tab and near as I can tell the library was transferred because in the Songs tab, the tracks are there in duplicate, one with the exclamation at the left and one that functions playback. (However, my total song number is doubled and that can be addressed later if it doesn't impede anything). In individual playlists each track within has a “not connected” mark. I have an extensive playlist catalogue so I would rather not have to reconnect them one by one. Can you think of a solution where I don't have to do that? Would you like more info? Aragorn

I've come to the conclusion seeing as how its a 2014 model and he has 6 GB's of free space on his main dirve. I've managed to boot his MB Air from an external drive and now I need to know how to transfer his files to the external hard drive from the internal hard drive, while of course running on the external device. There are two backups to be concerned about. Your iOS devices can backup your App purchases to the computer (that can get big fast!) and it can also backup personal settings. Personal settings can be backed up to your iCloud account and Apple provides 5GB free space which is just enough to back up two devices. I suggest the personal data (basically how you have your iOS device configured) be backed up to the cloud rather than the computer. This will free up about 5GB. Once this has been done, open iTunes, select preferences, click on the Devices tab and you'll see the stored backups (if any). Delete each one.
The backed up apps are stored in the iTunes folder. Inside the music folder you'll find a folder labeled Mobile Applications. Good news: you can delete this folder (mostly) safely because it costs nothing to redownload apps if needed. Bad news: if the app is removed from the App store it can't be downloaded again. This has never affected me but it is a potential problem. My solution is that I don't backup my apps to the computer. In the rare event that I need to wipe my iOS device and restore it I've found that downloading the Apps again (which is done automatically for you, no need to remember what you had) takes no longer than restoring them from the computer's hard drive.

If you want to sync your iTunes library on your Mac to your iPad ....
Connect your iPad to the Mac and launch iTunes. Click on your iPad's name on the left side under the devices heading. Then click on the Music tab - and select the music that you want to transfer. Does your iTunes window look like this - with Sync Music checked and the playlists or albums checked as well like in the photo below?
When you click on the apps tab do you have Sync Apps checked and all of the apps in the window below checked to sync as well?
If you select all of the items under the different tabs in iTunes - music, apps, photos. etc. - when you sync - all of the selected content should sync over to the iPad.

If the music was purchased from iTunes then you should be able to copy them over to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases if you have iTunes 11 on your computer). I have a Firewire cable and Thunderbolt adapter, but no icons showing either Mac appear on either desktop.

The fastest way is to use Carbon Copy Cloner and a external drive formatted GUID OS X Ext. J in Disk Utlilty, then connecting to the new Mac and using Migration Assistant in the Utilites folder.
Even faster, if you can determine your going to replace all the apps from fresh sources anyway (like if the older Mac's OS X verison is old thus the apps) then just use a external drive and copy just your files to it, then connect to the new Mac and transfer over.
Some apps you can just grab the registration code and install it fresh on the new machine with the old code, talk to the developer about transfering the program, as long as it's deleted on the older Mac in the process.
It used to be Firewire Target disk mode was fastest, but since Thunderbolt came out...

I just got a new pc and I need to transfer music and playlists that were saved to an external drive from 2 seperate computers. There are 2 different sets of music and playlists, one mine and the other my husbands.
Is it possible to put both onto my new pc, and if so...how. I am needing a step by step instruction as I am not real familiar with how to make these changes on iTunes.
