How to transfer files from an iMac to a PC?

I copied files (.pdf, .doc) from my iMac to a memory stick for a colleague in a charity. He has a PC and can't open them. The folder in the memory stick shows the file extension as .fpbf  Please advise on how to transfer files from an iMac to a PC.

Format the memory stick as "fat" then copy the files to it.

  • How to transfer files from an iMac without upgraded Migration Assistant to a new iMac that doesn't have a firewire port?

    Hello.
I just purchased a new iMac. He's awesome. However, he didn't come with a Firewire port. (Bummer, because I have one from the last time (2007) I had to transfer stuff from my iBook...)
When I turned him on, he wanted to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from the older iMac; she doesn't have the most updated Migration Assistant, though. (She works just fine, but she only has Snow Leopard.)
Okay, so what I'm wondering is if I just have to use a huge external hardrive to move everything? If I do that, will my programs (Microsoft Office) move? I fear they won't move/transfer that way. Ugh.
    PLEASE HELP.
    Ideas? Advice?
    Thank you in advance!

Firewire 800 (what the new iMac has) is 9 pin. FireWire 400 is 6 pin (what your old iMac has).  Hopefully you didn't damage your new iMac by trying to insert a FW400 cable into its FW800 connector. The numbers are important in the case of the ports. They don't interchange!!! Get the proper cable or risk damaging your new iMac.

  • How to transfer files from old iMac to new iMac without transferring everything.

I just got a new iMac and would like to transfer files from my old iMac.  I don't want to transfer everything from the old iMac.  I just want the files, iTunes library, iPhoto library, etc.  I don't want to transfer applications and settings.  I was told in the Apple store that if I transferred my files using system setup then my new computer would look just like my old one.  I'd rather start out fresh with the new one and just bring in the files I need.  Is there a tool that allows you to customize what you transfer over from old to new?  Thanks for your help!!

Carbon Copy Cloner might be the correct tool. It lets you pick and choose what to clone.
    http://www.bombich.com/ccc_features.html
install CCC on the old Mac,
connect the Macs with an ethernet cable,
enable file sharing on both Macs,
use "connect to server" (in Go menu) to mount the new Mac's drive on the old Mac.
    run CCC.

  • How to transfer files from old iMac to new iMac

What is the easiest way to transfer files from my current iMac (intel) to my new iMac..which be arriving this week?
    Thanks

Get a Firewire cable to run between your old iMac and the new one. Boot the old iMac into Target Disk Mode. Boot the new computer for the first time. You will find yourself in the Setup Assistant. You will have an option to transfer files from another drive or Mac. Choose that option to transfer your Home folder, third-party applications and support files, and network preferences. You will opt to transfer from your old iMac's hard drive which should appear as an alternative source.

  • How to transfer files from 2005 iMac to new intel i3 iMac?

I've used my ancient G5 iMac since 2005. I expect my new iMac to be delivered tomorrow. It's been a long time since I had to transfer files and I'm feeling intimidated. (I do this only every 5 or 6 years!) Background -- The old Power PC iMac (OS X05)  is networked to my wife's PC via Apple Extreme. The old iMac is cabled to an external back-up drive and to an Epson flatbed scanner. Everything (including the wife's PC) works OK -- I am making the change becuase the Power PC processor is out of date )can't use Snow Leopard) and the old iMac is very slow. So how should I go about doing this? Should I connect the new iMac to the Apple Extreme network before transferring files? I do have Firewire and Ethernet cables.  Advice, please -- the easiest way.

Firewire first choice, but be aware the new one will be FW800 so you'll need an adapter cable.
Ethernet (wired network) second choice, but a lot slower.
Don't even think of doing it by wireless; far too slow.
Not difficult at all, just use the setup assistant to transfer everything on the first boot of the new Mac. When you start the setup, you'll be asked if you want to transfer files - choose "from another Mac" and follow the prompts.
Before you do all this, though, check out all your applications for compatibility with the new operating system (probably Lion). PPC applications such as Appleworks, many Adobe products and earlier versions of MS Office won't run at all on Lion, so you may need to upgrade your applications and/or convert documents to apps which will run in Lion (AW to iWork for instance).

  • How to transfer files from older iMac G5 (2004) to intel iMac?

Hi - I have an older iMac G5 (circa 2005) that is sharting to behave like an older desktop.  We have a 2 year old Intel iMac and I suspect that I will soon be transferring files from the G5 to the Intel iMac.  Any suggestions please on the best course of action in moving files over.  With Thanks!

You can use Target Disk Mode to transfer data, like your user folder, or you can use Migratin Assistant.

Some of the information below has subsequently appeared in a document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchased content.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only media purchased from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):
    - Senuti - http://www.fadingred.com/senuti/

Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141 - dates from 2008 and some outdated information now.

    Thanks Raman and Challa,
We want to move file from application server to Shared folder, not on local machine. We checked FM which you guys have provided but those are not able to read file from application server.
We need this program to run in background so that we can use this in daily process chain.
    Appreciate your inputs on this.

  • How to transfer files from iBook to reader?

How to transfer files from iBook to reader

The first step is to export the PDF from iBooks to your computer (this cannot be one on your iPad or iPhone). Connect your iPad or iPhone to your syncing computer. Open iTunes. Select your device (how to do this depends on which version of iTunes you are running). Click on the Books tab at the top. In the current version of iTunes 11, I had to choose to view by PDFs. Then I could drag a PDF from the iTunes window to my Desktop.
Then follow the instructions in this document to import the PDF(s) into Adobe Reader:
    http://forums.adobe.com/docs/DOC-2532
Not so easy, I'm afraid. Easier if you just keep copies of your PDFs on your computer.

how to transfer files from 1 ipad to another

Depends what you are trying to transfer.
Are you just trying to add content such as apps, music and photos?
Or are these files that were created by such apps as pages and numbers?
You can download content that was purchased in the itunes or app store by signing into same account.
You can dowload any documents saved to icloud by signing into the same account.
You can create a backup of the first ipad and restore the second from that backup.
You can import or sync the content from the first ipad into itunes and then manually sync to the second.
But this all depends on what you are actually trying to do.

how to transfer files from mac to ipad without using itunes ???
as i want to use my ipad for official use as well...please suggest..

well to be 100% technical, no you didn't but that aside, it good to know there are ways for people to transfer music into the default apps without iTunes, if they have a need.
I tend to use 3rd party apps for documents, like your mentioned iExplorer etc, which are handy.
I see from a search the two "apps" you mentioned are not iOS apps, which I had assumed, SyncPod and FreeSync are apps for your computer, that would explain their access to the default Music/Video apps.
I had wondered how Apple had allowed iOS apps in the store that could get around the sandboxing in iOS of apps.

The music sync is one way -computer to ipod.  The exception is itunes purchases.  File>Transfer Purchases.
As everything came from your computer in the first place, it should still be there.
