How to transfer files most efficiently

Hello
I want to work on a site at work and at home. How should I transfer/update the files each time I switch computers?
Just copy the whole site folder? Do I have to do it within DW? Is this something similer to a "collect for output" so I'm sure to get all the files?
I see a "_notes" folder has been added to my files, what is this?
Thanks
Gretchen

just do like Murray said and sync from each computer when you begin working each day. though when you sync select 'Get newer files from remote' and overwrite local copy if asked.
as far as the work in progress Murray mentioned, that will partly depend on your position in the company, are the the boss/owner or a worker bee, and how much access you are allowed if a worker bee.
if you are working on a file and do not complete it you will have to do one of a few different things,
either copy the files from the local computer (work PC) that your working on at the time to a flash drive or something, and then replace the same file on the other local computer (home PC) when you begin working from that or visa-versa, upload/put file to server when finshed editing
or upload/put the work in progress file to the server overwriting the remote copy, when you sync from the other PC overwrite the local copy of that file when you being working on it again. HOWEVER the hazard of this is that if your site is live to the public an unfinished edit may cause problems. I WOULD NOT RECOMEND THIS OPTION IF WORKING ON A LIVE SITE.
or you can create a directory on the file server that will not effect the site, so long as no script in any files point to that directory it should not effect the site. for example htdocs is commonly the root folder, create a directory OUTSIDE of htdocs maybe something like "work in progress" or "WIP" save/upload WIP files to this directory, and then download to each local pc as needed, upload to the proper htdocs directory when editing is complete.
or if work allows you to connect to the work network from the home PC/laptop? then you can (depending on the type of network) remote in to the work PC and copy the file over to the home PC or visa-versa, or save a copy of the file to the shared folder before leaving each PC and overwrite the local copy when you get on the other.
or if work allows you access to the FTP file manager you could also download the file server copy to the local PC from the FTP file server, wheather its from the sites FTP file manager/back end, or with an ftp app like Wise-FTP. this could be convenient for a WIP directory.
the easy way of work in progress edits depends on what work will allow you to do as well as your personal preference.
If its me I would choose the WIP directory outside of htdocs, but then I am the VP of a new (week old) small LLC, so I can pretty much do what I want and just tell my partner to deal with it.....LOL good thing he's my best friend.

Depends on the file type. Most files - documents you have created, like MSWor files - you can drag and drop.
You should not do that with Applications.
Here's how to move iTunes and iPhoto libraries:

Moving Applications is more complex. Post back if you want to do that.
Do not forget to trash the originals on the internal drive, and then EMPTY the trash.

Some of the information below has subsequently appeared in a document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchased content.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only media purchased from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • How to transfer files from ipad to new computer

I am trying to find out how to transfer files, (Music, Videos, Ect.) from my iPad to a another computer. I lost all my files on my computer and it won't let me recover my files from my iPad and save them on my new install.

Honestly there is no real way unless these are items you have purchased from iTunes.  There is an option to Transfer Purchases from iPad but these are only going to be Apps, Music, Videos, etc. that you purchased and downloaded from the App Store/iTunes (you can also do the same by just opening up iTunes on your computer, going to iTunes Store, then going to Purchases, and downloading your purchases).
If they are files that you haven't purchased through the App Store/iTunes then you won't be able to transfer those back to your computer.

How to transfer files from iBook to reader

The first step is to export the PDF from iBooks to your computer (this cannot be one on your iPad or iPhone). Connect your iPad or iPhone to your syncing computer. Open iTunes. Select your device (how to do this depends on which version of iTunes you are running). Click on the Books tab at the top. In the current version of iTunes 11, I had to choose to view by PDFs. Then I could drag a PDF from the iTunes window to my Desktop.
Then follow the instructions in this document to import the PDF(s) into Adobe Reader:
    http://forums.adobe.com/docs/DOC-2532
Not so easy, I'm afraid. Easier if you just keep copies of your PDFs on your computer.

how to transfer files from 1 ipad to another

Depends what you are trying to transfer.
Are you just trying to add content such as apps, music and photos?
Or are these files that were created by such apps as pages and numbers?
You can download content that was purchased in the itunes or app store by signing into same account.
You can dowload any documents saved to icloud by signing into the same account.
You can create a backup of the first ipad and restore the second from that backup.
You can import or sync the content from the first ipad into itunes and then manually sync to the second.
But this all depends on what you are actually trying to do.

how to transfer files from mac to ipad without using itunes ???
as i want to use my ipad for official use as well...please suggest..

well to be 100% technical, no you didn't but that aside, it good to know there are ways for people to transfer music into the default apps without iTunes, if they have a need.
I tend to use 3rd party apps for documents, like your mentioned iExplorer etc, which are handy.
I see from a search the two "apps" you mentioned are not iOS apps, which I had assumed, SyncPod and FreeSync are apps for your computer, that would explain their access to the default Music/Video apps.
I had wondered how Apple had allowed iOS apps in the store that could get around the sandboxing in iOS of apps.

As everything came from your computer in the first place, it should still be there.

You can use your external hard drive that is used to backup your important data to transfer the data from your PC to your Mac.
If your Windows 7 PC is a laptop and you live near an Apple store, make an appointment at the Genius bar where they will help you transfer the data you want transferred from your PC to your MBP.

  • How to transfer files from a window PC to iPad3?

How to transfer files (mainly PDF files) from a window PC to iPad3? I am a new user of iPad, please tell me the basic method.

You will first need an app on the iPad that supports PDF files - unlike a 'normal' computer the iPad doesn't have a file system, and everything on it has to be associated with an app. Apps that support PDFs include free apps such as Apple's iBooks and the Adobe Reader app.
For iBooks, you can add the PDFs to your computer's iTunes via File > Add To Library, and they should then go into the Books part of your iTunes library. You can then sync them to the iBooks app on your iPad (which you will need to download from the store and install on the iPad first) by connecting the iPad to your computer and selecting it on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes, and then using the Books tab on the right-hand side to select and sync those PDFs to it.
Other PDF apps quite often use the file sharing at the bottom of the device's Apps tab
If you don't have a copy then you can download the iPad manual from here : http://support.apple.com/manuals/ipad/
