How to transfer iTunes to new mac while keeping library on external drive?

I have a new iMac (running 10.4.11). Old mac is a G4 powerbook, which is synched to my ipods and iphone. My iTunes library is on an external hard drive. How do I get the new computer to "own" the iTunes account and media library so it will synch with my devices and not tell me I don't own the music? Thanks!

Have a look here (click the text after this arrow -> iTunes: Troubleshooting iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod
I don't understand what you're suggesting at all.
I'm suggesting you change your signature line to reflect your current computer and current OS so people know what to help with.
Change what under "my settings"
Your computer model and your OS version. You list two different computers and 2 different OS versions.
and and where is "my settings"?
As stated above, it is here -> My Settings or at the top right side of this window.

  • Transfer iTunes to new Mac from Time Machine, then sync with iPhone

    Hi everyone,
I just sold my old Macbook (everything was backed up with Time Machine) and bought a new Macbook Pro. Now I want to copy the iTunes library back. The problem is, even if I copy all the music, video, apps, iTunes U... from Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/... to the new Macbook, iTunes still thinks (rightfully) that it is a new machine. So if I plug my iPhone to it and try to sync, it will ask to *remove all my apps*, music, contacts... and resync again. That would probably *remove every user data* I have in those apps.
    Do you have any solution?

By any chance do you still have the old computer? If you do then copy /Home/Music/iTunes/ folder on the old computer to an external drive then transfer it to the new computer.
If you don't have the old computer then you have a little bit of a problem. Did you use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to transfer your files from the TM backup? Is the username (account short name) on the new computer the same as on the old computer? I'm guessing "no" because you are getting the permissions errors.

  • How do I transfer my iTunes Library to my new Mac while keeping all of my playlists/settings??

I recently bought a new MacBook and have had a very hard time trying to transfer my iTunes Library because I can't figure out how to do so without losing all of the specific info/settings! Is there any way to transfer my iTunes library so it appears on my new Mac exactly as it did on my old one? For example, checked and unchecked songs, my playlists, the date added/play count/etc information on songs. I can copy the entire iTunes library with a shared file, but then I lose that information. Please help!

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder.
If you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

  • How to transfer data from NEW mac to OLD?

I want my Macbook Pro, gotten around early 2009 (runs on Leopard), to have the same things on it that my newer iMac has (runs on Snow Leopard). However, I'm running into a problem when I try to do that.
A few months ago I had no problem transferring ALL my data, accounts, files, applications, etc, from my new Mac to my old Macbook. I had erased the disk on my Macbook and then somehow managed to transfer all my data from the new Mac to the my old Macbook from a Time Machine backup.
Now, however, when I try to transfer it now through Migration Assistant or the startup disk, my Macbook tells me that I can't because my Macbook runs on an operating system older than my new Mac. It will not allow me to.
I don't remember how I did it last time. I remember getting the same error message, but finding a way to fix it... but I forgot completely! Last time, using the same Macs, and the same situation, I was able to transfer my data from the new Mac to the old one using Migration Assistant and Time Machine. Now it won't let me.
Is there any way to do this?
Please, advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

It's been awhile since I messed with this, but try opening Migration Assistant on the newer Mac.

  • HOw to transfer Itunes to new computer so that existing Ipods linked to that account are recognized on new PC

Old PC Windows XP. Now Purchasing a new PC(Windows 7). Will need to transfer existing Itunes account/music/apps to the new PC. Once done, will existing Ipods be recognized on the new PC so that syncing and transfers are not an issue. I know that when I connect  our Ipods to our second PC Iwe have limited options when it comes to syncing/transferring.

As long as you are syncing to the same library you were before then it should be a relatively seamless transition.  To move the entire library:

  • How to transfer fcp7 to new mac pro mavericks

    OSX 10.9.5
    2014 Mac Pro (trash can)
    2.7 GHz 12 Core Intel Xeon E5
    32GB 1867 MHz DDR3
Hey everyone, I need some help.
I would like to transfer FCP7 to my recently purchased Mac Pro.
I'm in the process of upgrading, but first need FCP7 to work before making all the final changes.
I would attempt a clean install but the original FCS, along with the FCP7 upgrade discs are currently lost ever since I moved from NY TO MN.
I migrated FCP7 directly from my 2010 Mac Pro into the new Mac Pro applications folder. But immedialetly after trying to launch FCP7 I get "Final Cut Pro cannot be opened because of a problem."
Did I miss any hidden files or folders located elsewhere in the CPU?
I would like to run FCP7 on the new Mac Pro (2014) from my previously purchased copy currently located on my older Mac Pro (2010) which is also running Mavericks.
I hope I made enough sense to you all, enough to get pointed in the right direction.
    Peace and thank you,
    B-NYC

How did you do this? Without the original install discs, your only option it to use the Migration Assistant.app.
If you just copied the application, it will not work.
If you did get if from your older computer via the Migration Assistant.app, then trash your FCP preferences.
You can download (free) Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion and it will do all the work for you:

Your FCP preferences will be reset to default settings the next time you launch FCP.

  • Windows Profile corrupt how to transfer ITUNES to new profile

My windows profile was corrupted and when I connect from the new profile it wants to wipe my iphone.
    Windows XP Pro
    Iphone 3GS 16g
There is nothing in the ITUNES other than my iphone. Everything is ON my IPHONE but instead of syncing IPHONE to ITUNES, it wants to sync ITUNES to IPHONE(wiping my iphone).
SO I need to either recover my ITUNES from old profile or sync IPHONE to ITUNES

    Hi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
Move the folder *C:\Documents and Settings\<Old Profile>\My Music\iTunes* to the root of the C: drive so it becomes C:iTunes.
Click on the icon to launch iTunes and immediately press and hold down SHIFT until asked to create or choose a library. Choose the library at C:\iTunes.
iTunes will recognise that the old library is the one connected to the iPhone.

  • Transferring iTunes Library from PC to Mac (while keeping files on External Hard Drive)

    Hi,
I've been using iTunes on my old PC (HP 2000 Notebook) and accessing all of my music from a 1 TB Toshiba external hard drive. I recently switched to a MacBook Pro and I'm trying to get my iTunes Library (145 GB worth of stuff) on to the Mac while 1) retaining my playlists, checked songs, etc. from the old computer and 2) without having to transfer the files from the external hard drive on to the Mac in order to save space.
I've tried the Hold Options + clicking iTunes and choosing the folder (my iTunes media folder on the old computer is saved to I:\1 NTFS\Music), and when I choose that folder on the Mac, it instead brings up a really out-of-date iTunes library instead of my current one.
Does anyone have a solution that might help me get my current library on to the Mac?
    Thanks in advance!

  • How to transfer iTunes to a second hard disc - internal or external.

I know this is a perrenial topic, but it still seems unusually tricky, and I've searched but not come up with all the solutions.
I have a modest size primary hard disc in my G5 (leopard 10-5-8), but a second one which is twice the size and empty. Plus two external hard discs which are huge - one terrabyte. So right now iTunes on my primary hard disc is slowing everything down and I want to put a whole lot more music in it.
So how to shift everything to the internal and/or external hard discs? I've tried and got nowhere. I shifted the library but the playlist didn't follow, so I put it all back again. And when I open iTunes on disc 2 which is empty apart from that, it just reverts to the window I get on disc 1. Doesn't seem to function properly on disc 2.
Ideas? I'd love some help with this - I'm a musician with projects for iTunes and this is driving me nuts.

Did you move the whole music folder to the external drive, then hold down the option key while starting itunes so you could select the new library location on the external drive?

  • ITunes 7.6 running slow with library on external drive

Ever since upgrading to version 7.6, iTunes freezes for about 30 seconds to a minute, every 2 minutes or so. Essentially, half the time i'm using it, I'm waiting for the "pinwheel of death" to stop spinning. My library resides on an external drive, when I open iTunes without having the drive connected, it doesn't freeze at all. Also, I noticed that when this freezing occurs, the light on my other external drive, and even my 4GB USB-key drive flash repeatedly, as if iTunes is searching for something.
I work for a music company and this is occuring on our two other Mac's as well: one is an iMac G5, and the other a duel-processor PowerMac G5. The iMac G5 actually has it the worst: when first opening iTunes, it is unusable for about 20 - 30 minutes while it seems to be scanning the external drive.
This did not happen with version 7.5.
I tried deleting iTunes preferences and reinstalling 7.6. I'm hesitant to roll-back to 7.5 as we have a ton of information in the library that I'm afraid to lose. But, if no other solution is available, that's what I might have to do.

    Two suggestions:
1- Have you looked at this announcement? http://discussions.apple.com/ann.jspa?annID=552
2- Are you certain it's not the external drive? If it is happening every time you plug the external drive into another computer (you mentioned an iMac and a PowerMac), then my inclination is to think the problem is with the external drive, and perhaps not iTunes. If the light is flashing on the HD, that doesn't necessarily mean that iTunes is searching for something; it means your HD is trying to complete a process.

  • Transfer iTunes to new mac, without losing ID3 tags (bpm, etc.)

    Hi
Got a bit of a tricky one.
I recently got myself a new MacBook as my old one's on its way out. I need to transfer my iTunes library from one to the other, but I'd really like to keep the information intact (particular bpm tags as I'm a DJ and its taken forever to curate them). Unfortunately, my music isn't all saved in the iTunes Media folder as I preferred it in particular folders, so I can't simply copy the whole thing across. I also have less than 10Gb of space left on my old MacBook so consolidating the library won't work (unless there's a way of moving the files instead that I'm not aware of).
I have all my music on an external hard drive anyway, but I was wondering if there was a way of importing the data itself into a populated library, in order to preserve things like bpm, playlists and other information. Really don't want to have to start again!
    Cheers!

BPM, I believe, is stored in the mp3 itself (never really checked but a quick web search should reveal where it is stored).
Playlists are only stored in the iTunes Library files.  the .xml version isn't really used by iTunes but is provided in a format for other applications to use.  Ratings, date added,  and play count are only stored in the .itl copy of the library file, though play count can be saved in individual playlist files, and ratings can be transferred in a somewhat complicated process.
Did you try my earlier suggestion of copying the whole iTunes folder to the new computer and starting iTunes that way.  The information you desire transferred will only get transferred that way.  If you start adding files alone you will likely get 80%of it transferred but your playlists and some metadata will be lost.

  • How do I transfer photos from my iPhone 4S directly to an external drive?

Hi.  I can't figure out how to transfer my photos from my iPhone 4S to an external drive without first putting them into iPhoto.  I have zero space on my computer and am now out of storage on my phone too.  I can't see my phone under Devices in Finder and I also don't seem to have the Application Image Capture.  These are all the suggestions that I've read elsewhere in other posts, but nothing has been helpful.
Please let me know if you have done this before or know what to do.
    Thanks

    Extracts copied from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083
You can import pictures from the device using Image Capture:
Connect the iOS device to the computer.
If Image Capture does not open automatically, you can navigate to your Applications folder and open Image Capture from there.
Choose the location to which you'd like to import pictures.
    Click Options.
Click the Options tab if it isn't already selected.
Enable the option "Delete items from camera after downloading".
Note: Deleting photos after importing helps to reduce Camera Roll size, and it improves backup and restore times. You may choose Keep Photos if you wish to import the photos to additional computers.
    Click OK.
    Click Download All.
