How to transfer iTunes with playlists to new imac

I have a 250 GB drive on my old iMac, and have been storing my iTunes files on an external hard drive.  I now have a new iMac and would still like to keep my music and a few current video files on an external hard drive.  iTunes on the external drive is 260 GB,  I also have another 100GB for various videos, mostly home movies converted to MP4 and stored separately so as not to clog up iTunes any more.
I understand that if I simply point iTunes to an external drive with this iTunes folder, on my new iMac I will no lnger have the playlists I have organized over the past 5 years.  Most of the music is stored by sub-genre and year, or by very personalized criteria.

Thank you for speedy reply.  I looked at the external drive iTunes folder and there is something called iTunes library and iTunes music library, but they do not seem to be used (thought the music library is a 35mb file)
On the old iMac, there are files with the same name, though these files show they ere last modified today.  It seems to hole most of the other media, like my mobile apps, iBooks content, podcasts and other material put on my iPad.
All my music and videos seem to be on the remote, but it is the music I am most concerned about, given the work I have put into organizing it in iTunes.
If I set up the new iMac iTunes incorrectly, would I be able to start over later.  I still have it in the box.
Thanks.

  • How to transfer music from iPhone to new iMac

My wife just got an iMac. She has had an iPhone for about a year or so. She wants to transfer the music from her iPhone to the iMac so she can then do new downloads on the iMac and keep it and the iPhone in sync. Photos transferred without problem. Apple says the music cannot be transferred. Any suggestions?

The iphone syncs one way for music, it is not a storage device.
The itunes purchased music can be transferred by File>Transfer purchases in itunes.
The iphone can sync with one itunes library at a time. You need to transfer you old itunes library - from the old computer, to the new imac, then sync.

  • How to transfer my pictures to my new iMac (and keep edits)?...

I just got a new iMac, and want to transfer all the photos from my old iMac. (I do not want to use Migration Assistant).
I have Aperture 2 (not the most recent version). Of course, I could export all of my photos and copy them over like any other files. But that wouldn't keep all of the edits I've made to many of the photos in Aperture.
What is the proper way to transfer everything over so that I have all of it, along with the current edits I see when I look at the photos in Aperture on my old iMac? If you can help, please be very specific as I'm no expert when it comes to Aperture.
    Thanks!

If you have a Managed Library:
Copy the Aperture Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Mac to the same location on the New Mac. Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch Aperture. Select your Library as the one to open. Done.
Somewhat more complicated if you have a Referenced Library, do you?

  • HT4527 do you know how to transfer itunes music to a new computer when the old computer is broken

    please answer

Unless you have a backup somewhere, then no.
You need the entire iTunes folder located in the My Music directory on your old PC.
You will still be able to redownload your iTunes purchases but any non-iTunes purchased media will be lost as well as playlists, play counts, etc...

  • Where are the actual Aperture files located? Only in the application? I am transitioning to Lightroom and would like to only move some of the files. Advice appreciated. Also anyone know how to transfer in with edits?

Where are the actual Aperture files located? Only in the application? I am transitioning to Lightroom and would like to only move some of the files. Advice appreciated. Also anyone know how to transfer in with edits? Using iMac, OS X, most recent Aperture and Lightroom 5.7 with plugin for Aperture.

    Define "the Aperture files".
    Read this concise guide.
The files you imported into an Aperture Library can be exported (at any time, and repeatedly) using the command "File ▹ Export ▹ Originals".  Your Originals are never altered.  What went in is what comes out.
Adjustments and changes to the metadata that you made since creating an Image in Aperture by importing a file are saved to a text file.  This file is combined, on-the-fly, with the Original to create the Image that you see in Aperture.  There is no file saved to disk that is the full-size Image.  Thumbnails are saved, and Previews are saved.  These are JPG files, almost always smaller than the Original.  They are not substitutes for the Image for the use you have.
When you need a file of an Image to use in another program, you export the Image from Aperture.  "Export" means "Make me a file of this Image according to these file specs I'm providing".  The way to get files of your adjusted Images is simple:  create them by exporting.  Specify "Original size", and use a loss-less image-file format (e.g. TIFF 16-bit) if you want to retain as much visual information as possible.
Search the Web for information about transitioning from Aperture to Lightroom.  Note that I say "transitioning".  You cannot move a database from one format to another without significant changes, and likely some loss of information.  Adobe provides a tool and some instructions.  I strongly recommend working out the process step-by-step, and then proceeding with first a few Images, then a bushel-ful, and stopping to use the first few, the the bushel-ful, before committing your entire collection to the process.
As always, never use any computer file without having a back-up.
We have seen mixed reports here of the success of the LR tool that creates a LR database from your Aperture database.
If you want to carefully define the process, and test and refine it, use the excellent process-development, analysis, and execution program inShort.
Sadly, there is not and can never be a good, thorough re-positioning of the digital assets in your Aperture Library to become digital assets in a LR database.  Just as a metaphor for any user contemplating transitioning to another digital asset manager:  that would be like digging up a house in one country, planting it in a hole in another country, and expecting to be able to use the toilet and the sinks, turn on the lights, cook dinner, and sleep soundly.

    Kirby.

  • How to transfer iTunes library to an external drive (thats easy!) but keeping the playlists musics on the computer?

How to transfer iTunes library to an external drive (thats easy!) but keeping the playlists musics on the computer?
    Many thanks!

Select a single song with a broken link, press CTRL+I to Get Info, cancel when asked to locate the track and take a look at the Summary tab. Post back where iTunes is looking for the file. It begins file://localhost
    Where is it really?
Please post back both paths so that I can make suggestions. Full paths please, exact spellings, you can replace your user name with <User> if needed.

I want to transfer my entire iTunes "folder" from a newer iMac 3.06 GHz Core 2 machine running iTunes 10.7 to an older iMac running OSx 10.5.8. How best to do this and keep all my data, tags and covers in tact?

Firstly, time to get rid of the 2 x 512MB FBDIMMs in there, they add more heat and use more watts then they add to the system. If you need more, and 4 or 8 DIMMs is ideal, Amazon has 2x2GB sets $22 - about 1/50th what I paid for 1GB new.
    Buy a 250GB Samsung EVO SSD $129
Pick up Carbon Copy Cloner http://www.bombich.com to clone the system to the SSD
A sled adapter for the SSD from Icy Dock $14 Amazon.com
7-8 years overdue for new system drive! amazed it lasted this long. An SSD plus some WD Black 2TB drives or larger should do the trick.
you can also put the SSD in the lower optical drive bay and use one of the two ODD "spare" SATA ports for the SSD - an SSD is the best way to improve the performance of our old Mac Pro 2006-7 models.
When you downloaded the Lion installer that was when to create a flash type installer with Lion DiskMaker.
If you have put in a new-ish graphic card then OS X 10.6.0 may not support it.

How can I transfer my iPhoto photos and iTunes library to my new iMac?

If the Migration Assistant won't do it, move them over as you would any other folder; they're located in the Pictures and Music folders of your home folder by default. The iPhoto library needs to be transferred via a drive, partition, or disk image formatted as Mac OS Extended or through an AFP network share.

I've just got a new computer does any one know how to transfer my song to my new computer. I've installed itunes but can't seem to transfer the songs.

    you can use home sharing.
or, assuming you have all your media files in the default location, copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music or media folder) from the old to the exact same location on the new machine.
you can either use your network or an external HD for that.

  • Transfer iTunes music to a new mac

I've just received my new iMac. I have 80 GB of music on an external drive that worked fine with my previous Mac Mini. I have copied this into the music folder on my new mac. When I open itunes in the new mac, I can only see 47 GB of music. However if I go to 'get info' for the itunes music folder inside the music folder, I can see that there is 80 GB in this folder on the new iMac. How do I get all my music into itunes on the new iMac , or how do I see this in itunes ?

Similar problem also. I have all my music backed up to am external hard drive from my old G3 and need to transfer it all to my new iMac. I can't use Migration assitant (doesn't work on G3) and can't use my back up program (silverkeeper) because it doesn't work on leopard (I will be using Time Machine once I get this figured out). I would like to know which files I need to drag from my external to my new iMac that will bring all my music, playlist's etc. to my new Imac.
    Thanks for all your help...

  • How to transfer iTunes to Macbook Pro

I recently had to erase my MBP completely and am now in the throws of re-building it.
How do I transfer my Itunes library of about 2000 songs (some purchased from the iTunes store)
from my new imac to the MBP.
I have tried several times using firewire in Target disc mode, or dragging the music folder across to the MBP icon all without success.
Currently by going to itunes on my MBP it comes up saying either its on a locked disk or I don't have write permission for this file. According to info I have added my name, admin and system all with read & write privileges.
I thought it was a simple job of moving the whole music folder over - obviously not.
    Any help please.

check if you have read & write permissions for your iTunes music folder. in finder, right-click on it and +get info+. unlock the little padlock (you may have to enter your admin password) and change the permission settings. next, click on the little gear-shaped icon and +apply to enclosed items+ like so
you may also give everyone read & write access. if this doesn't help, try the same on your iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder).
