How to transfer/migrate from Late 2008 MacBook Pro to MacBook Pro, with retina?

Is there anyway of directly connecting a Late 2008 MacBook Pro to a MacBook Pro, with retina, in a Target Disk Mode way without having to wait for the magical adapter in July?
Should I go to the Apple Store, buy a normal MacBook Pro, use it to do the transfer, and return it?
Thanks to anyone for taking the time to answer.

There is Setup Assistant when you first boot the new Mac, over wireless it's supposed to migrate for you, however I hear it can take hours and days to complete.

Another faster method would be to use the free/donations Carbon Copy Cloner the old Mac to a blank USB3, 2,1 drive, then hook it up to the new Mac and use Setup Assistant (or Migration Assistant) that way, it will think it's another Mac.
You can also simply drag and drop files into a same named account on the new machine manually from the clone.
It should take about a hour per 250GB to clone, about another hour for Setup Assistant.
Over wireless it could take a eternity.

Use your backup drive instead. No backup drive, then get a monitor and connect it to your computer. Or take the whole shebang to the Apple Store for help with the transfer. Or you can remove the drive from the old MBP and put it in an external enclosure.

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the 13” white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

Connect the iPad to your MBP and open iTunes.  In the photos section of your iPad in iTunes you can choose selected albums, Events or the entire iPhoto library to sync to your iPad.

  • Data Recovery from Late 2008 Macbook Hard drive?

I have a late 2008 Macbook. It was recently dropped by a child, resulting in it no longer turning on. (It worked one time when tried within about 12 hours after the fact and then wouldn't get past the Apple logo and spinning wheel on startup). I brought it to the Apple store and was told they were 99% sure it was just a failure in the hard drive cable. Unfortunately, I received a call sometime later saying it was not the cable, but the hard drive itself.
I am planning on having Apple replace the hard drive, but I am hesitant to pay them the requested $99 to retrieve data from the hard drive (which they say they believe they could do). I do not have an up-to-date version of Time Machine because I had been traveling for nearly a year with my Mac and had left my hard drive at home and, of course, this incident happened right after my arrival.
I was hoping I could do something like Firewire Target Disk Mode using my iMac ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661 ), but cannot do so because my Macbook does not have a Firewire port.
Does anyone have any solutions? If my only option is to pay Apple then I am resigned to that, but as I already have 95% of my data backed up & I only want a few files from a project I had invested quite some time into, I am hoping there is a way to recover the data myself.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I may have missed it ... late 2008 there were still the plastic-bodied macbooks and the aluminum-bodied macbook. I'm told the plastic macbooks have a max disk drive capacity of 500GB, and the aluminum-bodied macbooks are good upwards of 1TB. An important point to check is the drive height. Normal is 9.5mm (I believe all WD Scorpio Black drives are 9.5mm). Some are 12.5MM and some are less than 9.5mm. See what you have today, and likely it's 9.5mm, so replace with same. If  you're in the US, you might confirm max capacity with OWC who also sell hard drives.
One other option .... a little more expensive, however, you could install a solid-state drive in your macbook. If you're able to use a smaller size, a 240GB drive is around $240 at OWC.  Significant speed pickup for disk operations. If you consider this, remember for capacity you need to allow 10% or more for systems usage.
Going from Leopard to Mountain Lion, you may want to upgrade to current iLife programs. The only one no longer offered is iDVD, however. If you want a Snow Leopard level of iLife, Amazon or hardcoremac.com should still have the iLife package available.

  • How to transfer music from iPad to MacBook Pro?

I have recently purchased a MacBook Pro and would like to copy the music library from my ipad onto the MacBook. Can anyone advise me please on how to go about it, as I struggle. Many thanks.

    There are two ways:.
    1. A Sync will do it. If it does not work for you, check the various tabs in iTunes and confirm that the appropriate boxes are checked. You can decide which apps, music and videos will be transferred.
    2. Use Vibosoft iPad/iPhone/iPod to Mac transfer app
Vibosoft iPad to mac transfer program can copy everything from iPhone,iPad, ipod to computer for backup, I used it for long time, really powerful and worth a recommend! there are so many similar software like: Coolmuster iPad to computer transfer, iStonsoft,

  • How to transfer music from iphone to macbook pro

I recently bought an album on my iphone 5c from the itunes store, I expected it to transfer straight to my itunes on my macbook pro and my ipad but it hasn't. I've tried to redownload it on my macbook but it wont let me as it says it's 'purchased' on the itunes store but isn't in my library. Please help!!

    Hi ..
Two ways to do this ...
Using iTunes >  iOS: How to transfer or sync content to your computer
Or, if you want to sync your music between the iPhone and iPad to your Mac automatically via Wi-Fi, use iCloud >  Apple - iCloud - Learn how to set up iCloud on all your devices.
You get 5GB's or free storage space.

What is the best way to transfer photos from my Imac to Macbook Pro using firewire?

Put one of the computers in Target Disk mode by holding down the T key while your computer is starting. By doing this, the hard drive of the computer you put in Target Disk will appear as an external drive in the other computer, so just open a Finder window and choose the other computer's hard drive in the sidebar.
Then, just go to the folder where your pictures are and copy them to your computer or to the Mac in Target Disk mode, depending on the computer you put in Target Disk

Thanks Alot that works with purchasing a hard drive do you know any particular good ones?
Well you only really have a choice of Seagate and Western Digital now, however if you buy Hitachi external drive, even though WD owns them, it should be the best drive of all, certainly better than Segate + Maxor.
I would like to have one wireless.
External drives are wired, but you can hook them to a router and the router acts as the wireless data transfer to the hard drive.

If you've a CD with Microsoft Office on it, all you need to do is double-click the installer program on the CD. If you don't see the CD mounted on your Desktop, go to Finder>Preferences>General, and tick the box that says "CDs, DVDs, and iPods" under "Show these items on the desktop".
After you've finished installing Office, simply drag the disc to the Trash and it will eject (I don't have a Retina display model, so I'm not sure if there's an optical disc eject button next to the F12 key or nor - if there is, you can use that as well).
    Hope this helps.
