How to transfer my archlinux.vdi on an usb external hdd

Hello everybody from Mauritius ~!
I am Caron from Mauritius. I run Mint 17 Quiana 64 bit and an Archlinux Vm. My aim is to convert my archlinux vdi into a bootable external hdd ( I use a laptop so I'll be using a laptop external hdd in a usb casing.)
I read that I had first to convert the .vdi into a .raw and then use dd command. Unfortunately I failed because the commands are not working- unable to find the .vdi on my system. :?
Can u help please ?
Thanks in advance.
Caron
p.s : I use a Dell Laptop Vostro 1015

Hi everybody and  sorry for the delay...
First please note that Mauritius is a former ENGLISH colony till 1968 and is now known as the REPUBLIC of MAURITIUS. I invite you  all to vist it as soon as you can.
To be more serious, I abandonned the Arch vdi cloning and tried to setup archlinux on an external usb hard drive ( laptop 500 gb hdd in a SATA enclosure ) .
Arch recognised the disk as /dev/sdc and I did the install twice , having partitionning the hdd before on gparted.
I think that I am basing my setup process on a virtual box tutorial ( youtube ) but when I reboot the system and choose the option " boot on existing Os  " : nothing happens.
Is it because the command " vbox echo >> /mnt/hostname " affects the boot sequence . ERROR MESSAGE is " APM not present ".
It's a pity becase all other distrib such as Kali, Ubuntu and even Cylon install far more quickly and easily on the external usb hdd ?
Thanks again for your time, patience and support

ok - since you'll be sharing it with a PC - connect it to your windows pc - then format from there - instead of NTFS format - choose exFAT.
or, you can read the link below on how to do it in dos mode.
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-files/how-can-i-forma t-external-drive-in-exfat-not-in/0f6bf19a-19d6-4470-ae05-53ddf26bb476?msgId=1860 eae3-3488-4eea-8326-f87b89d9851b
once you've formatted it - you can now use it in both your macbook and windows computer.

  • How to transfer contacts from LGENV2 (maybe with USB)?

We recently purchased smart phones for our daughters.  They were very quick to get their phones out of the boxes and activate their phones.  Well, they hadn't backed up their contacts (or anything on their phones) before activating their new phones.  We now can't find a way to use Backup Assistant from the old phones (all are LGENV2s).  We do have the USB cable to connect the phones to our PC.  We'd appreciate any help.  Thanks.

Thanks.  I paired them, and tried to send "namecard" (checked all the contacts), but the other device (iPhone 4s) isn't connecting.  Any ideas?

You can actually use Bluetooth to transfer contacts! Just make sure they are paired together.

  • IPhoto 09 events - transfer events into same named folders on external HDD

This might seem an obvious question, but I have lots of photo events in iPhoto 09, all individually named. I want to transfer all the individual events onto an external HDD into folders with the same name.
    How do I do this?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Matt

    Thanks TD
I've tried automator and even asked in the Apple store, but the guy didn't really know how to use it. Does anyone else here have any further suggestions.
Or should I just start manually transferring events in individual folders one by one!! :-((

  • How can I migrate an Aperture library from an external HDD with Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) format?

How can I migrate an Aperture library from an external HDD with Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) format?
I used to store my pictures on an external hard drive using the latest version of Aperture. Now I tried migrating my Aperture library to Photos. However, after a short moment an error message popped up telling me that "Photos was unable to make a copy of your library before preparing it. Photos does not have the necessary permissions...".
My external HDD doesn't need any permission repairs nor is the system prohibited to read from or write to it.
Thanks for any advice in advance!

My guess is that the encryption is the problem for the new app.

Drag the file to an open iTunes window.  It will add the file to the playlist and put a copy on the drive designated in your preferenecs at the drive on which to store media.

  • How do I copy a TM backup to an external HDD with an existing TM backup (for another machine)?

    Hi,
My question relates to the use of Time Machine for two different Macs ... I have two Macs: a MacBook Pro (ML) and an iMac (SL). I use Time Machine for both.
Unfortunately, the external HDD (A) drive I use for the backup of my MacBook Pro is on the way out. I am now in a situation where I need to copy this Time Machine backup to another external HDD (B) which I use for the backup of my iMac.
I have decided that I would like to use external HDD B for all future backups of both machines from now on. It is a 2Tb LaCie drive with one partition. Therefore, I would like to copy the Time Machine backup data from external HDD A to external HDD B. Since both TM files/directories have identical names, I am looking for some advice of how to do this without 'deactivating' any of the backups or corrupting them, or screwing with permissions.
In case this is known to be problemmatic, would it be 'better practice' to partition the external 2Tb HDD drive into two partitions, then just use one partition for each backup? Is there an advantage/disadvantage to partitioning the drive? Will this approach make it 'less confusing for Time Machine' and reduce potential problems?
    Any advice would be great!
    Thanks,
    Mark.

Don't bother trying to copy a TM backup file. Just connect the other good drive to your MBP and create a new full TM backup on that drive. I do suggest you create a separate partition on that good drive for each Mac you will be backing up to it.

  • Transfer Ipod libary from Satellite C660 to external HDD

I am trying to find the way to transfer my ipod library to my external hard drive. I have watched it on you tube, but when I try it on my laptop C660, it doesn't do anything.
    Can anyone help.

    Hi
Maybe Im wrong but why do you post this request here in Toshiba forum?
In my personal opinion this has nothing to do with Toshiba notebook.
If you want to move or synchronize the ipod files, use Apple iTunes software.
Im not familiar with ITunes (I dont like it) but I assume you have to change the file location path somewhere in the iTunes settings and the path should point to the external HDD connected to the notebook.

  • How to transfer large files from macbook pro to External Hard Drive?

I want to transfer a file from my Mac to an external hard drive, it says "The item “File name” can’t be copied because it is too large for the volume's format."
I am trapped, if there is any way you could suggest me to overcome this problem I will be grateful.

I may be wrong, but I believe the format has something to do with it - note the sizes here (from the Help in Disk Utility on how to format a drive for Windows):

  • How to transfer or reassociate iTunes files from one external drive to another without reimporting?

    Hello,
Hope someone can tell me an easy way to do this.
I have a massive itunes library which is presently split between my macbook and my external Lacie. I would like to transfer the files from the Lacie to a new external drive without reimporting all the files into itunes. I essentially would like itunes to recognise the path of the new drive instead of the files on the Lacie.
    Any ideas?

I moved some movies and some seldom listened music (coped the files) into a folder on the Lacie drive. Then I reimported them to the main itunes library while holding down "option". This created a link to those files to the external. the files show up in my itunes but cannot be played unless i have the Lacie connected to them.
    See this link.

  • How do I transfer all my iPhoto images to an external HDD?

My iMac HD is getting full, it has a lifetime of images and music on it and so I have just purchased a networked Hard Disk which allows me to share its contents across my home network. I want to move all my music & photos onto it, but I know that if I just drag the files across I will lose all the metadata I have added to the photos, such as the location of the photos, added manually as they are scanned in images that date back to the 1970's. Allideas are welcome as to how to move this data across.
    Thank you

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • How to setup wireless time capsule with 3rd party external HDD and router?

    Topic says it all really...
I've got a linksys router and an iomega external hard drive.
I want to have wireless time capsule setup but i don't really wanna shell out for an apple time capsule when I have a perfectly working router and hard drive...
Can it be done? would I be better off buying an airport express/extreme?
    cheers

    Welcome, jackbyo!
    I've got a linksys router
    Good product
    iomega external hard drive.
    1) The drive must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to work with Time Machine.
    2) The drive will need to be connected directly to your Mac via USB or FireWire connection.
    Can it be done?
    As above
would I be better off buying an airport express/extreme
The AirPort Express will not support a hard drive.
Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme are not supported by Apple due to corruption issues.

To delete files from your external HDD, attach it to your MBP and drag the unwanted files to trash and then empty trash.
Then you select the files that you want to transfer by 'drag and drop' to the external HDD and trash the files on your MBP.
    Ciao.
