The article below will explain how to convert a video file in iTunes so that you can play it on your iPhone:
Verifying iTunes video conversion and video syncing using sample QuickTime files
From the Advanced menu, choose Create iPod or iPhone Version or Create iPad or Apple TV version. While converting, you will notice an item named "Converting..." appear in the list on the left. The "Converting..." item disappears after the conversion is over.
When the conversion is complete, iTunes will create a copy of your movie in your iTunes library. There will be two movies listed with the same name. The file with a kind of "MPEG-4 video file" is compatible with your device.
Connect your device and sync the converted movie to it.
Eject your device in iTunes and disconnect it from the computer.
On your device click on the Videos app and verify that it plays correctly.

You can't if you rented and downloaded it on your iPad, you can only watch it on that. From http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1657 :

You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only exist on one device at a time.

Does the rental not show in the iPad's Videos app ? You shouldn't need to go via the iTunes store app.

To use the iTunes Store in a country you need a credit card issued in that country, billed to an address in that country, and also be physically present in that country when using the store. Basically all you have access to would be anything offered in South Africa unless you move to a different country.
It's the media owners who get to tell Apple where and where they cannot sell their media. I'm sure Apple would be happy to take your money but if the media companies are not happy then they can say no to sales in SA.

I have no issues running webpages, video games, etc. in HD, however I receive an error whenever I attempt to watch a movie on iTunes in HD. The message reads - To play 'The Movie' in HD, you must have a computer with a built-in display or have it connected to a display that supports HDCP.
Any ideas on how to correct this? Do I need iTunes to detect my hardware? (my computer has an on-board graphics card that is not HD compatible, I had upgraded to the 550.

The dude at the apple store said that when I download it I can designate if I want it downloaded to my device (ie: MacBook) or my Cloud...but I don't see that option being given. Any help? My closest Genius Bar (thanks Katie) confirms "Add To Library" will sequentially add everything in the folder you specify to iTunes - no prompt to select individual movies.

you can copy them for your own use.
Copying is not the issue. Breaking the encryption is.
But it's kind of a catch 22 in that you cannot copy a DVD unless you break the encryption.

Europe is not one country.
Most European countries have their own equivalent of the DMCA and it is illegal to break the encryption in some of these countries.

before downloading the movie, go iTunes > preferences > advanced and point iTunes media folder location to the external.
iTunes will put new additions to your library where ever iTunes media folder location is pointed.

Allan, I tried all you suggested. I ended up with 'IMG' files in the source list, and they won't play. When double clicked they try to open for a blink, then back to the list.
When exporting the iPhone video from iPhoto, what did you fill out in the dialogue box. All I saw were selections referring to photos (jpeg, medium, etc.) I didn't see choices for video! Wouldn't it be just as easy to just drag
the video from the iPhoto thumbnails to the desktop? Am I missing something here?

How can I play a movie in iTunes mini player? (Progress bar button broken?)

It took forever to figure out how to get iTunes to even OPEN a new window for movie playback, but once I finally found instructions (click the button with movie art to the left of the progress bar to open in new window) they only partially worked. A new window opens, but movie playback continues in the main window. The new window shows a freeze frame of the scene displayed at the moment I clicked the progress bar button. The new window looks just like the mini player, and its control buttons work, but they effect the main window's movie playback not the new window/mini player where I want to watch the movie.
Is it my progress bar that's broken? I'm all updated with iTunes version 11.1.5. Does this version not play well with my OS X 10.6.8?
Ultimately I just want to be able to play a movie in the mini player while using other applications; surely that's possible.
[Also, on the "Operating System" dropdown menu below, I just selected OS X 10.6.8 and then the dropdown showed "No operating system selected" and the selection arrows no longer work. Any ideas what happened? My MacBook Old feels so janky right now.]
