How to treat permission for staff & others on OS X 10.8 Server?

By default OSX Server 10.8 comes up with "read only" permissions for staff und others.
Is there any reason to keep permissions for those groups on "read only"?
Isn´t it better, to set their permissions to "no access"?
Would love to get an answer :-)

I meant to use those Mac apps as an example for this discussion.
Basically, any specific Mac app that needs re-installation is the focus.
While some combo updates may include a given app, it's a random chance that the app needed is the one being updated.
While Pacifist used to work when users had an install disc, it's not useful with Apple's current policy of downloading the Mountain Lion OS X directly online. That's really why I'm asking. I don't think Apple has considered that, down the road, people may need to install specific apps, and to reinstall the entire OS, needless to say, is very time consuming. Getting one's customized OS back to the way it was is a huge amount of work, and as a result, users may opt to do without given apps because of this hassle. The real answer is to burn a copy of the OS X Mountain Lion installation process onto a disc so that Pacifist can once again be useful in this regard. I'm not sure how to do that but there may be a way.

3- Somebody said that I have to change the temp and tmp folder to be on c:\ drive >> might this solve the problem?

Most of the instructions you have mentioned , already was configured.
except for the tmp and temp directories.
And even I changed them from System Properties >> Advanced >> Environment Variable under User variable for Administrator and System variables , the problem still exist Os User and Group Check .

Actually I am not sure about the rapid install patch version but I have download the EBS R12 from the following link and I think it contains the recent installer version

How to obtain permission for c'righted material?

I'm new to publishing. I have a serial documentary that I'm releasing as a podcast. There is a lot of various music incidental to the recording and I can't remove it and I can't reshoot. I consider it like a coke billboard in the background of my movie. I'd like to look into getting permission anyway because I don't want anyone to be unhappy about this movie being publicly available. I'm not trying to profit by this, just trying to share my personal documents with a wider audience.
Is it necessary, and if so, how can I get copyright permissions?

Yeah.. this is what a lot of people think. Unfortunatly it will cost you $$ if you get caught. I know it's not intentional, but think of it as creative art. There is someone back there who is trying to make a living creating these sounds. Because he creates sounds instead of a widget, he shouldn't get paid for it?
Also, getting mechanical liscences are not only difficult, it's time consuming. Takes time to do it, and you have to wait weeks, sometimes months to get the actual permission to do it.
Google search for a site called FREEPLAYMUSIC.com
They used to have all of their audio (1.3 gig) loaded onto the early idisk software as a free download from Apple, now they are a pay per song basis.
I was able to download their stuff before apple took it off the site.
You can get previews that are real nice, and their stuff is not too expensive now, compared to other music sources.

How toplink grant permission for direct field access

I know already know that if I need to direct access private or protected field of an instance I must grant supressAccessChecks to ReflectPermission class using policytool or edit java.policy file directly ...
but how Toplink grant this permission to ReflectPermission class since my java.policy file remain the original.

In my own experiences, the first release of JDK 1.2 had problems with reflection accessing private attributes. As you mentioned, you had to have a policy file that allowed TopLink access to reflectively access private attributes.
Since subsequent releases (1.2.x, 1.3, 1.4, etc), it always has "just worked". I.e., it seems to be default behavior of JVM's that you can acess private attributes through reflection. Sometimes some app servers come with startup scripts that have policies that change this default behavior and you have to override it, but in general, a vanilla JVM simply will allow private attribute access through reflection.

How to listen out for a stream of data coming from (web)server

I have an applet that connects to a server (same location as web server) and connects to a server on a socket. This all works fine for sending commands to this server. But the server can send data to the client at any moment in time. So how do I listen out for the activity? do I launch a separate thread that sits listening for incoming data?
What is the way to do it?

How to configure IIS for SAP BO 4.0 - installed in different server?

I have installed:
Server Nr1 SAP BusinessObjects BI-Platform 4.0 in a 64 Bit Version and Server Nr2. IIS also 64 Bit Version.
(BO and IIS are not running in the same Server)
I have no idea to configure IIS. Can someone of you tell me the steps that are to do ?

Hi Qamile,
You can't. IIS is only for integration with Sharepoint portal server. Check the supported platforms guide. Only Java web application servers are supported.

Take permission for folder and contents

Is there a way to take permissions for a whole folder and its contents all at once?
I transfered hundereds of photos from my old MBP (Snow Leopord) to my new MBP (now Lion)
I know how to change permission for a single file, but I'm tired of doing it one at a time....

I get the following:
chmod: Unable to change file mode on /Users/chris/Desktop/permissions/IMG_0298.JPG: Operation not permitted
EDIT:
I enabled root, and attempted it that way.
I don't get the error message, but I also get no change on the files. The folder is now unlocked and I have permission for it, but I still have the files inside it locked.
Any tips? Slight variation of the command?

I also tried this command using path/filename on a individual picture, and it had no effect. Only unlocked the folders in my tests, not the files themselve. Perhaps I need a CLI for dummies guide

Aren't the web proxy hits logged in the standard apache logs? /var/log/httpd/access_log

I am able to access itunes on my i5, ipad, and my old i4 that i use solely as my ipod now. At the time problem occurred, i was connected to ext hard drive that hold over 190GB music, to add to my library. I am now unable to add to my library using my laptop. any advise/help is greatly appreciated!!

I just had the same problem and was able to fix it after trying a couple of things I found after a search.
The solution that worked for me:
Find iTunes folder - it should be in C:\Program FIles (x86) or similar depending on your operating system
Right click the entire folder (no need to open it) and click properties
Click the security tab
Click edit and highlight the user name under which you logged in.
Click the box next to full in the allow column, which should check everything
Click apply
Open iTunes
This worked for me.

How To Fix: "The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."

I can't reopen my iTunes after I have to force quit when it does not respond. I get this message:
"The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."
I've read to do the solutions. I right clicked on both the iTunes and Music folder and went to info for each. On both the lock at the bottom of the Get Info was locked. All of my users including admin can read and write all files within those folders. They are even a shared folder. I clicked on the lock to unlock it, typed in my admin password, and went to the gear to apply to all files inside. After doing that I keep getting the saved message.
I tried another way that I've found online to move my ituneslibrary folder to the desktop and then open my iTunes. In theory the iTunes is supposed to ask for where the iTunes library is. Once that is prompted you quit iTunes and drag the iTunes Library folder back to the folder from the desktop and reopen iTunes to apprently solve the problem. However, when I move the iTunes Library file to the desktop and try to reopne iTunes the icon just keeps bouncing and when I right click the application does not respond.
This problem is only resolved if I restart/shut down my macbook pro which is a 15-inch Core 2 Duo with intel. It will be 5 years old in December. I currently have Lion and the latest iTunes 10.5. This problem started in late December.

If you hold down the option key when starting iTunes, it will allow you to select a library or create a new one.
You can create a new one, and then add all of your iTunes music back in by simply dragging the old iTunes music file onto iTunes.

I actually figured it out...I had to go to the iTunes Library Extras.itdb file and give myself permission to have full control. THEN, I could go and estore a previos version. Once I had done this, I got the same message for iTunes Library Genius.itdb . . . I did the same thing with it and Voila'!!

Repair iTunes Security Permissions
Right-click on your main iTunes folder and click Properties, then go to the Securitytab and click Advanced. Use the Change Permissions... button grant to your account (or the Users group) and SYSTEM full control of this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to Replace permissions entries... which will repair permissions throughout the library. When complete switch to the General tab, click in the Read-only check box to clear it, then click Apply.
If you don't have the option to change the permissions then use the Owner tab and Edit... button to take ownership from an account with administrator privileges. Tick the option to Replace owner on subcontainers and objects.
Repeat with the media folder if it isn't stored inside the main iTunes folder.
If you've brought over the library from another computer you may also want to remove any "mystery" identities (S<string of dashes & digts>) that have come over from the old computer...
The images above are from Windows 7. Hopefully the system isn't too different in Windows 8.

Hi we had a custom List "ABC".
List had 2 columns:
Project Name: (P1, P2, P3, P4, P5, P6)
Project Leads: (PL1, PL2, PL3, PL4, PL5, PL6).
All project Leads can have permission to edit only their Project (P1, P2, P3) like
PL1 can edit P1
PL2 Can edit P2.....
But my Question is how to restrict PL2 cannot have permission to edit P1
is it possible to set permission for this through OOTB in SharePoint 2013.
Any help will be appreciated......
