How to turn off email auto download?

Hi All,
I'm running Tiger (10.4) on one hard drive and I'm running Leopard (10.5) on another - working on familiarizing myself and looking for problems. 10.4 uses Mail.app 2.1.3 while 10.5 uses Mail.app 3.5.
With Mail 3.5 - I've been unable to find a way to switch from auto-downloading of emails in favor of "Manual." This "feature" of auto-dowloading emails has always bugged me (a lot). So I use "Manual" downloading with v. 2.1.3. and want the same "sanity" with 3.5.
Secondary problems: I notice that 3.5 cannot verify the certificate of my ISP Pop server and keeps warning me "this may be a fake certificate" and gives me options to "stop" or "connect." Geez, there's no doubt about the SAME certificate when using Mail.app 2.1.3.
Also, it appears that Mail 3.5 is taking "forever" to send (upload) image attachments. I haven't had a chance to really track this down, but it seems like Mail may be converting every .jpg file to .png - which increases file size. I watched the Activity window and saw upload speeds of from 0 to 2.7 kbs - but suddenly the indicator bar jumps ehead and the mail is sent.
Any have any idea how to stop auto-downloading of emails with Mail.app 3.5?
Any further help with those secondary problems will also be appreciated.
TX in advance.

Thanks Klaus1 - it's interesting to see that Apple designers still have not caught on to the idea that "icons" for important things need to be distinguishable from one another.
That is, the icon for the overall preferences panel (in 10.4) looks a whole lot like the icon used for Mail 3.5 prefs (in 10.5) and it's located in the same spot as overall prefs on Mail 2.1.5. So I naturally thought the icon on 3.5 was for "overall prefs" and ignored it. Thanks Apple, for letting your employees take so many naps during their work shifts.
You get a "helpful" for your post. Now if I can get responses on the slow upload (on DSL) by Mail.app and figure out why it doesn't recognize my (national based) ISP's certificate, I'll be a happy camper.

  • How to turn off email auto forward?

I have a 3G iphone and it's set up to retrieve email from my gmail account. I don't know how, but it has started trying to auto-forward my email to another account (my work blackberry). The emails don't go through so I keep getting a failure to send message for each email I have been receiving. I looked in settings and I don't see anything set up to forward email, I'm not sure how it started in the first place. How can I turn off the auto-forwarding?

The forwarding would not be on your iPhone but on your GMail account. Using a browser, go into your Gmail settings and look at one of the top tabs that says "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" Turn off forwarding there.

  • How to turn off email and web site links?

I'm making my own letterhead template for my massage business.
I want to turn off the automatic linking to my email address and web site which are both included on my letterhead. It's just annoying that every time I accidentally click on either of those I'm taken to my web site or my computer is trying to email me!
I only snail mail my letterhead and have no use for the linking. I can change the type format so it looks like the rest of the letterhead, but I can't turn off the linking.

There is an option under Preferences > Auto-Correction to "Automatically detect email and web addresses." You want that one unchecked. There is also a link inspector, second from the right, with options to enable hyperlinks or make all hyperlinks inactive. Seems contradictory to me & I've found that if a document already has some linked text, changing these preferences doesn't change the existing links. And, if you paste in something with a link the link will still be active.

  • Can't turn off all auto-downloading

I'm on dial-up at home; poor phone line quality, download speed between 2k and 3k bytes/second. I only use it at home for a very few things that work at that speed. But it won't work at all if something else is using the bandwidth. (I take it to a broadband site to update apps etc.). I have set firefox to never check for updates, and on the add-on's page have unchecked the "check for updates" button and clicked on the link to make all add-on's NOT check for updates. (I also turned off the "check certificates" under the advanced section.) Still, when I start up Firefox, I see in the resource monitor (using windows 8) that firefox is downloading something. This makes using it for something I want to download (or browse) impossible. What else could Firefox be downloading or doing with my bandwidth? How do I make it stop? Thanks. Note that I am posting this from a difference computer, the problem is on a Windows 8 machine, using a recently updated version of firefox.

First off I'm surprised you can use the modern internet on speeds that slow. Do you start loading a page, go make lunch, then come back? lol
Anyway, you can see what connections Firefox is making by reading [[How to stop Firefox from automatically making connections without my permission]]
I'd make sure you always have the latest version of Firefox (Use another computer to download the installer onto a thumbdrive if needed) as newer versions can be faster and less resource intensive (and I'm guessing you want to squeeze out every bit of resources you can), and make sure you scan for malware that could be making unrequested connections in the background ([[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]]). Also, consider getting a better connection if possible.

  • How to turn off mail auto fetching on iPhone 4

    Heya Guys,
I have noticed ever since the iOS 7 update on iPhone 4 the mail options have been really temperamental.
Before this software came about I was able to only have emails fetched when I manually went into my inbox and swiped down. Now every so often I get random mail notifications when I'm not in my mailbox & it's closed.
I have my Email settings as the following:
    Fetch New Data: off
    Outlook: Manual
    iCloud: Manual
    Holiday Calendar: Manual
    Fetch: Manually
But still I get them randomly every so often. Anyone know how to stop this happening? Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you in advance.

Very easy just turn on airplane mode then turn wifi on after turning airplane mode on! Works for me.

  • How to turn off iTunes auto-start when iPhone connected?

The option "Open iTunes when this iPhone is connected" is disabled (grayed out) in iTunes 10. The grayed-out check box is unchecked, yet iTunes starts every time I plug in my iPhone 3G. I would like to be able to plug in my phone without iTunes starting. Is there a way?

Right. Un-checking the preference to prevent auto-sync re-enabled the auto-start option. Then I was able to check and un-check the auto-start option and re-check the prevent auto-sync preference. Now all seems well. Despite appearances (the un-checked option), the internal setting was in the wrong state and twiddling it seems to have set things right.
What a boneheaded user interface, where items on widely separated parts of the UI affect each other invisibly.

  • How to Turn Off the Auto-Select Function When Clicking In a Document?

Whenever I click my cursor within any document (Mail, Text, this post) sometimes an entire word is selected (highlighted in blue) rather than the cursor just being there blinking & ready for me to type. If I click again the entire line is selected, then the whole paragraph.
This is VERY frustrating when all I want to do is place my cursor within the document to edit or begin typing. If I'm not careful and click in a document and just start typing, the auto-selected text is deleted. Yikes!
Only my Mac Mini with the Leopard OS 10.5.8 does this, not my PowerBook w. Tiger OS 10.4.11. Thanks for any advice on this.

    Correct, Sig.
When I checked the Double-Click speed in prefs, it was set all the way to the left -- SLOW. When I set it half-way to the right, problem was solved. Thanks much.

  • I need to know how to turn off my auto fill i do not like haveing that info accessable to hakers and do not want my computer to remember credit card numbers?

i looked in tools to options and then to privacy but i do not see a box saying remember the text that i type. i do not know if this is a program on firefox or windows that is auto fill.

You can set the pref <b>browser.sessionstore.privacy_level</b> to 2 (never) or 1 (non-HTTPS, default in Firefox 3 versions) on the <b>about:config</b> page to disable saving cookies via session restore.
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.sessionstore.privacy_level
To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
*Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
*Preferences that have been modified show as bold(user set).
*Preferences can be reset to the default or changed via the right-click context menu.

I'm currently running the Aperture trial and whenever I plug in my iphone the software automatically opens. There must be a simple command to disable this - it's extremely annoying - I just can't seem to find it.
Any help would be much appreciated
    Many thanks

I just don't like Apps launching automatically so I never use the feature.
What I don't like is that when I'm working in Aperture and plug in my phone for a charge, it interrupts my work to try to import from the phone.

  • Please can someone tell me how to swtch off the auto correct spell check option?

Can someone please explain to me how to turn off the auto spell check option? the one when it auto corrects? thanks! im desperate!

I believe that you turn off that spelling feature in the individual program that you use. Go to the edit menu of the application being used and see if there is a spelling feature listed. If there isn't, it may be that this feature is an integral part of the application and is located in the preferences, and you'll find it there. This would need to be done for each program you want to use that is bothering you with auto spelling correction. I don't believe there's a general setting for autocorrect that works across programs.

How do I turn off "your recent download with your apple id" emails? Annoyingly often and they fill up my inbox.  Is there a way to unsubscribe from these?

It is in Settings>iTunes & App Stores to change automatic downloads. But it isn't your device that needs to be changed if you are the one that made the download. He needs to turn off the setting for automatic downloads on his phone. I'm guessing here, but you are all sharing the same Apple ID?
