  • How to turn off hard disk identification in LR 3.3?

    Hi!
I have a problem with LR 3.3 on my Windows XP. I have a lot of harddisk (1TB, 2TB SATA2, made by Samsung) in my XP system with my RAW photos, all encrypted by Truecrypt. When I need to import my existings photos from that secured harddisk (Truecrypt is the best tool i have tested), LR 3.3 is blocking option Move and Add in Import dialog.
I must duplicate my photos by Copy options only - like from memory card.
LR 3.3 is thinking, that my encrypted harddisks are my memory cards, and is disable Add and Move option.
How to turn that bad identyfication off?
And in the end, every time when I want to import photos - LR 3.3 is searching all my TB harddisks (more then 30 minutes) to create and show my thumbs in folders - and I can not stop this searching. How to turn it off too?
    Regards

    Remisteness,
There are a few things to mention regarding your problem:
    1) Scanning all of the Drive(s) after Starting Import
Right after the import dialog opens, try to click onto an internal drive as soon as possible and uncheck "Include Subfolders". This should prevent the scanning of the drive(s).
    2) What is presented to the O/S for an Encrypted Device
Obviously, your encryption software presents the "virtual" drives as removable devices to the operating system, which leads LR to treat them as "Cards".
I have a similar software in use to access encrypted data in "Container Files" (SafeGuard PrivateDisk). In SafeGuard PrivateDisk, I can configure how a "virtual" drive is presented to the Operating System, either as a removable device or as a simulated harddisk. If I choose "Simulate Harddisk", the "virtual" drive is represented like a harddisk in my WinXP and LR does not show it as a removable device, hence without the restriction imposed on "Cards" during import.
    3) Restrictions imposed by LR while Importing from "Cards"
LR prevents users from moving photos when directly accessing a memory card, because if a file would get corrupted during import no valid copy of the image would exist anywhere anymore. Also, adding photos residing on a real memory card does not make sense either, as too many users would be looking for their original images after disconnecting the (and possibly reformatting) the memory card.
There has been a lengthy discussion in this forum lately on whether it makes sense or not that LR tries to protect users from their own wrong doing. I guess one can see it either way, and the limitations chosen by Adobe kind of protect Adobe from too many questions/accusations.
    4) Workaround for LR 3.3
To be able to add or move from a removable device in LR 3.3, you can do the following:
Create yourself one or two Import Presets, with Add or Move as the action to be performed. You have to create these presets while doing a test-import from a interal or external HDD, and save them from there.
When accessing your removable device, access the drive by clicking onto the drive letter in the drive list below "Files", and not by clicking onto the removable device under "Devices"
Choose one of the Import Presets built in step 1
This will use Move or Add as the action to be performed (note that no action at all will be highlighted), even though you're importing from a "Card".
As this behaviour is a hidden/undocumented feature (or even bug?), we do not know whether this possibility will still be existing in future releases of LR, but for right now it seems to be a workaround.

  • TIME MACHINE ON MACBOOK PRO - when to turn off hard drive

I'm about to begin using Time Machine and have a rather basic question. From what I've read it seems that TM is a round the clock kind of deal: backing up every hour on the hour. I have a MacBook Pro, which I do not keep on all the time. I shut it off every night, and when I'm traveling from location to location. Can I just shut down the external hard drive affiliated with Time Machine every night too, and then start it up in the A.M. with my computer? What happens when I'm traveling away from the external hard drive and the hourly back-up times come up?
    any help is appreciated.
    Rex

I think that if you look closely, you will see that most people with "endless" backup problems are running older machines, with slower processors and older USB/Firewire controllers. No doubt, there are others with more up to date machines that are experiencing problems as well, but I think its less common.
You and I both have MacBook Pros (I have the original one). My backup of the FULL system went quite well, and took less than an hour to an external firewire 400 drive. So I think it would be worth it for you to back-up your whole system.
If you backed up everything, including those system files and the library, then if something did go wrong, the restore process would be much easier. all you would do is boot up from the Leopard DVD, and follow the menus to choose the option to Restore from Time Machine Backup.
(one exception: if you did an Archive and Install vs a clean install of Leopard, you might want to exclude the old system folder)

  • How do I turn off iCloud Drive?

I don't like the idea of all my docs in the cloud.  I want to stop the syncing and just keep the docs on my computer.  However, when I try to turn off iCloud Drive it tells me that I'm going to be deleting everything from my Mac!  How do I stop iCloud Drive but keep my files secure in my Mac?

The logic is that iCloud Drive is a hub for data shared among your devices, and the assumption is that if you delete something, you want it deleted. And practically, your file is treated as if the Drive copy is the only one. The Drive system may cache a copy on your device to allow easy, quick access, but the master copy is the one in the cloud. Delete the master copy and the cached copies have no "parent" and no way of maintaining any kind of sync.
It's similar to using a corporate network drive to get access to your files from anywhere. Delete a file without making a local copy and it's no longer accessible.

  • How to turn off "Copy Files on Import"

I'm new to Photoshop Elements 9 and the Organizer.  I'm trying to import my pictures into the organizer but I don't want to copy the file from the network drive to my local Macbook hard drive.  Unfortunately I can't figure out how to turn off the "Copy Files on Import" checkbox.
From within the Organizer I am selecting:
File -> Get Photos and Videos -> From Files and Folder
This opens a Finder window and I can navigate to the network drive, select the source folder, and select the files I want to import.  I just can't seem to figure out how to disable the "Copy Files on Import" option.  Is there something in Prefences that I need to change to allow me the option?
    Thanks,
    Vince

    From the PSE9 help :
    Add files from specific folders
In the Elements Organizer, from the Display menu, select Folder Location. The folder hierarchy panel opens on the left side of the Media Browser.
In the folder hierarchy panel, browse to the folder containing the files you want to import.
Right-click/Control-click the folder, and choose Import To Organizer. The Getting Photos dialog box will report whether files were imported.
    Click OK.
If files were imported, the folder’s icon changes from an Unmanaged Folder icon to a Managed Folder icon .

  • I have an Ipad, I activated the time capsule with no issues. I added the airport Utility application without issue.  However, I do not know how to access the hard drive with either my Windows computer or the Ipad.  Does someone know how?

I have an Ipad, I activated the time capsule with no issues. I added the airport Utility application without issue.  However, I do not know how to access the hard drive with either my Windows computer or the Ipad.  Does someone know how?

On windows load the airport utility .. latest correct version as possible.. there is no windows 8 but win7 works after a fashion.
Make sure the TC is using SMB compatible names.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Type the name directly into windows explorer.
    \\TCname or \\TCIPaddress
If no luck turn off all the firewalls.. internal windows plus security software plus whatever other gargyoles and other rubbish AV software you have running.
Ensure windows is able to at least ping the TC by IP address and name..
Use the utility in windows to set file sharing to guest account on with full read and write access.. and set workgroup to WORKGROUP.

  • How to wipe the hard drive on a screen-dead Powerbook G3?

The display on my 1998 G3 Wallstreet Powerbook recently went black and the computer made a noise that I understand is called The Chimes of Death, although the hard drive still makes whirring noises. My local and trustworthy Apple repair service assures me the Powerbook wouldn't be worth repairing even if they could get the parts for such an old machine.
Is there a way to wipe the hard drive and make my data irretrievable before disposing of the computer?
If there's no way to wipe the hard drive, I'd like to find out: (1) How to remove the hard drive. (2) The best way to destroy the hard drive or at least make it forever unreadable (can my shredder eat it?). (3) The correct way to dispose of a Powerbook that has heard the Chimes of Death. (From what the repair service says, I assume nobody would want it as a donation.)

    Turtlewiz,
I would not be so quick to pronounce it dead:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14438
I would try the suggestions in the above article. Will it boot to a CD?
As far as wiping the drive, it is easy as long as you can see a display so you can follow the steps necessary. You just open Drive Setup in the Utilities Folder on the CD > select 'zero all data' in the Initialization Options; do it a few times if concerned.
Removing the HD is relatively easy: Just lift off the keyboard and the heat sink, then remove the HD.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/3.0.0.html
Hit the HD a few times with a hammer and nobody will bother with it...it has a glass platter.
Nothing to offer on the recycling except Good Will may still take it as "non-working" since there are Mac users looking for such bargains.

  • How to turn off frame edge highlighting in CS5?

Has anyone discovered how to turn off the frame edge highlighting on rollovers. I find this feature visually distracting and quite annoying as I'm moving around a page. Send advice, please. Thx.

    Chief:
Sorry we got off track and didn't post the main workaround for Frame Edge Highlighting: Keep your hand on the spacebar.
This comes from  Mike Rankin in the InDesign Magazine Tip of the Week in January:
TIP: Spring-Loaded Tools to the Rescue
InDesign  tries very hard to help you align objects when you drag by snapping  them Do you dislike the Frame Edge Highlighting that appears when you  mouse over frames in CS5? Spring-loaded tools can help. Frame edge  highlighting only appears when you use one of the selection tools. With  spring-loaded tools, you can press and hold single keys to temporarily  switch to any other tool. As long as you hold the key for more than a  second, you'll switch back to your previous tool when you release the  key. You have plenty of choices (t, \, p, f, m, n, c, e, g, z, etc).
Holding  the spacebar also prevents the highlighting from appearing, and it's a  nice big place for your fingers to rest. Heck, you don't even have to  pay much attention to where you press--just rest your hand in the middle  of the keyboard and lift it up when you want to select something. But  don't hold v or a, which are the shortcuts for the selection tools.
    - Mike Rankin
(Mike had suggests this several times in the past year,  though not with the spacebar. E.g. he recommended 'H' back in June over  on
    InDesignSecrets. "H" for Hate).
There have been several threads on this, including the locked 201-post monster, Frame edge highlighting, and the feature request Allow Frame Edge Highlighting to be turned off, and frame edge highlights on hover.
Basically  the takeaway is that it only happens with the selection (V) and direct  selection (A) tools, and that multiple people have asked Adobe for a  control to turn it off, and they've finally added one, but only in CS5.5, not in a CS5 maintenance release.

  • Yoga 2 Pro -- how to turn off switching mode notifications -- e.g. "tent mode", "tablet mode", etc?

Does anyone know how to turn off the notifications that pop up in the upper right corner telling you that you have just changed from one configuration to another -- e.g. changing from tent mode to tablet mode?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Just disable it -
Task manager > Startup > Click "Yoga Picks" > Click "disable"
Next time you start your computer no more annoying pop ups.  If you want to be annoyed again you can always re-enable it.

  • I dropped my macbook pro and the screen is broken can i still use it with an external monitor? Or can I or how do I transfer hard drive files to my mac mini?

I dropped my 17" macbook pro and the screen is broken. Can I still use it with an external monitor? When I plugged it into a monitor I had used it with before, I'm not able to see anything on the macbook screen to control it. It came on but I just got the blue screen with nothing else after typing in my password. (Didn't see the password form just assumed it was there somewhere and it did go from space to blue screen but no desktop icons, files, dock strip at top or anything else, just blank blue screen) so I can't access the system preferences.
Or can I / or how do I, transfer hard drive files to my mac mini? If not salvageable as is can I pull out the hard drive and make it an external harddrive? In otherwords is anything salvageable? It seems it's coming on I just can't access anything. BTW I was told it would cost aprox $1000 to replace the screen! I paid almost $4000 for this thing and it was running great - makes me sick to lose it!

I'd like to promise you that everything will be fine if you just get the monitor going - but it's hard to know what the hardware damage might be. It might be the monitor, or the damage might be greater.
Your best solution would be visit your local Apple Store and let them know what your situation is. They have access to diagnostics you don't, and they might be able to the best way to save your data and keep you computing. It's still not covered, but they can tell you what your current options are.
Um, you might consider investing in a backup drive.
And there other repair options, too. Powerbook Medic http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/pages.php?pageid=67 offers reliable repairs, and quotes prices well under Apple's.

  • I simply want to know how to turn off iCloud* without losing my contacts

Call me old fashioned, but I really do NOT want to use iCloud EXCEPT for ONE THING*: and that's to find my phone, ipad or laptop if it goes missing.
Having said that, I have figured out how to turn off icloud on my ipad and my iphone (I am not using the phone as a phone, just as a glorified ipod) while keeping the "find my ipad/iphone" function active, BUT
I can't quite figure out how to do it on my laptop.
I seem to have done it already for photos, and for the calendar, (I know this from checking iCloud to see what it's got) but just cannot figure out how to turn it off for contacts.
And YES, I've backed up all of those things at LEAST 3 different ways, I just don't want the Cloud to be one of them.
So can anyone tell me how to turn off contacts in the cloud without it also magically deleting them in my laptop? (I had it happen on the ipad, that's why I'm worried.)
Thank you for understanding-I'm older and this stuff just keeps getting more complicated and I'm a simple person. I'll back up my own stuff!

If you are refering to documents such as Pages and Numbers files....
The only way around this is to "save as" you icloud documents using the associated app to a local folder on your mac.  Then turn off icloud.
Of course, when you sign off of icloud, the docs are removed from the mac, but remain in icloud.  In the future when you sign back in, the documents are available to you again.
Oh, and the icloud documents are also stored locally in ...
    ~/Library/Mobile Documents
Note that Library in the user's home folder is now hidden, so you'll have to set Finder to view hidden files.
The Mobile Documents folder has subfolder where copies of the doc/data files are stored.
You can move these files to another folder to save them.

  • I'm using same icloud and same apple ID on two iphones. Now i get calls from same number on both iphones at the same time. How to turn off that?

I'm using same icloud and same apple ID on two iphones. Now i get calls from same number on both iphones at the same time. How to turn off that?

Apple ID's are not device specific, so when you changed it on the iPad 2 it changed it on the iPhone 4 as well, since it's the same account still. What you need to do is create a second Apple ID (so you'll have two accounts, one for iPhone 4 and a seperate one for iPad 2).
To create a new Apple ID on your iPad 2:
    1) Go into Settings > Store.
    2) If you are already signed in, tap your Apple ID on the screen and you will be given a few options, one of which is to sign out of your account.
    3) After you sign out, now click the "Sign in" button.
    4) Tap "Create New Apple ID" and follow the instructions on-screen.

  • How big of a hard drive will a DV7-1150us support?

I have an HP Pavilion DV7-1150us that the hard drive failed in and needs to be replaced. How large of a hard drive will this PC support?

The largest listed as an order option is 320GB- but I would think at least a 500Gb could be used. The biggest issue you face, if using Vista Recovery Discs, is that most hdd's are now AF (Advanced Format) and they rarely (never) work with this type hdd. I would suggest searching around for non-AF hdd if you will be using Vista.
