How to turn off Ken Burns Effect

Hello
working with iMovie HD 6.0.4
I do have iMovie 11, but can't figure out how to manage more than one soundtrack (Movie and Music).
So back to iMovie HD 6.
I searched the Help section regarding turning off Ken Burns Effect.
This is what it says:
To remove the pan and zoom effect from a photo in your movie:
Select the image in the clip viewer or timeline viewer.
Click the Media button, click Photos at the top of the Media pane, and then click Show Photo Settings.
In the Photo Settings window, deselect the Ken Burns Effect checkbox.
Click Apply.
BUT: here is NO checkbox to deselect Ken Burns Effect.
Anybody know what happened?
The reason I want to get rid of it is that zooming makes stills unwatchable. I it barely ok in iPhoto but in iMovie, the resolution is totally messed up.
It would be great if somebody has an idea to turn off Ken Burns Effect.
Thank you
Christian

Go to File/Project Properties and you can define the default behavior for adding stills to your project.
After clicking File/Project Properties, you will click on the Timing Tab. There you will see how to set the default still photo duration and the initial photo placement.
You an set it as Ken Burns, Fit, or Crop. You can always change it later in the Rotate, Crop, Ken Burns tools, but if you are importing a lot, it makes sense to set the default as the one you are most likely to need.

  • Turn off Ken Burns Effect?

Hi - does anyone know how to turn off the ken burns effect? i see the option to do so in project preferences -- but it is only applying to the first photo in the series and I'd like to shut it off for all... can anyone help?
    thanks!!!
    rachel

    Hi Rachel,
Select (highlight with the yellow border) all the photos on which you wish to turn off Ken Burns. Now, on any of the photos click on the small gear icon and select "Cropping, Ken Burns & Rotation" - be careful not to deselect the photos, click just on the icon. In the Viewer select "Fit" (in the top left corner of the Viewer). Click "Done" (top right corner). Now all the selected photos will fit in the frame, with no motion applied to them.
The Project Properties selection (in the Menu) only applies to photos when you first add them to your project. So, it's best to set your options there when you start a new project and before adding content to the project.

  • Turning off "Ken Burns" effect for SOME photos

I see that someone has asked a similar question in the past and told that it's not possible to turn off the Ken Burns effect for some photos, but I'm hoping someone has a workaround or there's a hack...
I've made a slideshow and got the idea to "tell the story" by creating some "title" images in Photoshop elements which I've placed in between a series of photos.
These are just black backgrounds with the title (e.g. "...and the party begins", "Family reunion" etc.) in big white letters. I'm very happy with that idea
I like the Ken Burns effect for the slideshow as it adds some semi-video "action" effect, but NOT on the titles. Having the Ken Burns effect there just looks stupid, so I would like to remove it for the titles alone.
I know I can do it the other way round (go to "Settings" for the Slideshow, deselect "Automatic Ken Burns effect", then manually add the effect for all the photos I want), but with a slideshow album that's going to take ages to do!!
    Is there a better way?

Perhaps you're checking the KB button on the "main" menu for the slideshow. That actually changes only the setting for the image that is currently selected. Try using the "Settings" button and deselect the "Automatic KB effect."

  • Can't turn off Ken Burns effect

    Hi
doing a movie of some photos and can't seem to turn off the ken burns effect when i uncheck the box and click update. Any ideas? Thanks

    Two things occur to me.
First, you might just need to delete preferences and do a permissions repair. To delete preferences, shut down iMovie and trash the file com.apple.iMovie.plist located in User (the house icon)/Library/Preferences. On relaunch iMovie will replace the deleted .plist file. Before relaunching, do a permissions repair using the Disk Utility app on your Mac. Close down all running programs. Open Disk Utility and select your hard drive icon displayed in the left hand pane, and then click on Repair Permissions.
Second, there is a bug in iM6 that prevents any editing of a photo to which the Ken Burns effect has been applied if the trash has been emptied at any time after the effect had been applied. The solution there is to reimport the photo, and don't empty the project trash until after your project is completed.

  • Can I turn off Ken Burns Effect in iMovie for iPad 2?

Can I turn it off, and adjust a default time for pictures when added to timeline?

You can't turn it off the Ken Burns effect, but if you set the same start and end positions for zoom and pan then it won't appear to do anything.
5.0 seconds seems to be the default display time for each picture. I can't find an option to change that anywhere.

  • How can I turn off Ken Berns effect in slide shows

How can I turn off Ken Berns effect as the default in Aperture slide shows.

Depending on what theme you choose (this would be for the "Classic" theme), it should be under the "Crop" setting, which will be a choice in Default Settings when you're in your slideshow, on the right side of the window. For crop choose "Fit in Frame" or "Fill Frame" as opposed to "Ken Burns." You can also do this for individual slides, turn it on or off...
    Hope that helps.

  • Can I turn the Ken Burn Effect off when using the iMovie app on my iPod touch 5th generation?

I have an iPod touch 5th generation and I'm trying to make a movie using the iMovie app. When I put an image on there it moves from side to side and zooms in and out. I believe this is called the "Ken Burn Effect". Is there any way that I can turn the Ken Burn Effect off without having to adjust the image position and zoom level to be the same for the start and end points?

    Hello MisfitxCaleb
Unfortunately, the Ken Burns Effect cannot be turned off in iMovie for iOS. Like you mentioned above, having the photo at the same start and end point is the best way to make it appear as if it isn't moving/zooming.

  • While working in iMovie... how do I shut-off Ken Burn effect ?

I using an iMac wit Lion and trying to develop a movie of photos and music combined.   When creating the project it automatically turn on Ken Burns and now half my photos are chopped off heads.   How do I turn KB off???

Click on a photo in  your project. Then click the Rotate, Crop, Ken Burns tool in the middle toolbar. You can choose Crop, which will cut off the sides to make it fit in the frame (but you can choose the rectangle that shows). You can choose FIT which will show the whole photo by adding letterboxing. Or you can choose Ken Burns and set the beginning and ending rectangle.
If you would like to set a default for all future photos that you add to this project, click FILE/PROJECT PROPERTIES. This choose FIT, CROP, or Ken Burns for Initial Photo Placement.

Using the iPhone4 (iOS 5) to play a photo slideshow on the AppleTV (just upated) and I don't seem to be able to turn off the "Ken Burns" effect on the iPhone. The pictures are too zoomed and you cannot see the faces. However, when I play the same slideshow on the iPhone4 the effect is not there.
So I am unsure if this an iPhone or AT2 issue, but I hope someone can help.

  • Turning off Ken Burns?

    Hi
All my slideshows play with the Ken Burns affect whether the 'Ken Burns Effect' is checked or not.
I'm getting sick of it as with it on there's so much of one's photos that gets chopped off.
Can anyone please tell me how I turn it off?

  • How do I remove Ken Burns effect from individual photos?

The instructions say to " In the Photo Settings window, deselect the Ken Burns effect checkbox and then click apply". My interface shows the word "update" instead of "apply" which has worked when I change other settings such as the length of time a photo is displayed. However every time I deselect KB...it comes back! I have also tried to constantly save the project, trying to save the deselect process.
Has anyone an idea? BTW the KB effect is very poor for most vertical pictures as it will cut off the top of the photo.
    powerbook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.9) iMovie 6.0.3 version

    • Yes, the Photo Settings window says Update instead
of Apply because you are updating an existing clip,
    not importing a new one.
However every time I deselect KB...it comes back!
    • Not sure exactly what you mean there. Do you mean
that in spite of unchecking the Ken Burns checkbox
the Updated clip doesn't change? It still has the Ken
    Burns effect?
YES - see solution I found below.
If so, it sounds like iMovie may be failing to save
the updated clip to disk. That can occur if the
project resides on an external disk that uses the
wrong disk format. iMovie requires the Mac OS
Extended disk format. To check yours, see this:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=41
    76921#4176921
I had our office software person check this out.
BTW the KB effect is very poor for most vertical
pictures as it will cut off the top of the photo.
    • The Ken Burns effect can't read our minds. It only
does what we tell it to do. For photos that have a
portrait orientation it's normal to adjust the
zoom/pan so the rendered clip stays within the photo.
Note that it's possible to drag the photo in the
Preview window to adjust both the Start and End
points. So for a tall photo you may want to zoom/pan
    up-or-down instead of side-to-side.
Note too that the settings in the Photo Settings
window always accept those settings of the last photo
we imported, updated or clip clicked on. So once
you've imported a tall photo with the Ken Burns
settings you like, you can easily apply those
settings for another photo. Just click on that
previously-rendered tall clip in the Timeline before
    importing your next tall photo.

    Karl,
Thank your for your input and in the last couple of days I have been able to produce the iMovie. But I now have another question about burning it.
Let me point out that I was able to deal with the Ken Burns issues by deleting the photos I wanted to change and replacing with new photos and using your tips + the help menu on "adding motion to your photos" to zooming right / left / vertically (which was very helpful).
Now that I have my project I cannot burn it as I get the following:there is not enough space to encode the aspects and in the pull down: "iDVD needs 2.350 GB of disk space to encode the remaining assets, but only 1.231 GB are available" I tried to cut down the files by deleting 5 chapters thus reducing the menu to one page showing chapters. I also re-saved the project with a new name.
BTW - I did burn it once but needed to fix it as the opening menu didn't have sound and I saw some other small photo details I wanted to fix. This version had 11 chapters on 2 menu pages with photos in the background. Essentially all I did was add a few more photos in motion and add the sound. That is why I thought maybe it was too much and removed the chapters saving one remaining page with music. I also do not have it on wide screen format as that uses more memory.
Can you help me with this? I don't understand why I'm getting the same message no matter what I do.
    Many thanks,
    Rozy

  • How come sometimes the Ken Burns effect allows you to edit the entire picture, and other times it automatically starts at a smaller section of the photo?

How come, in imovie, when adding the Ken Burns effect to a still photo, sometimes the phoo appears as the full size, and other times, the green and red ken burns boxes appear only on a smaller portion of the picture? I want to be able to Ken Burns a bigger chunk of a picture, but often times it is as if there is a pre-set for just how much the Ken Burns will cover.

Is it possible that the ones that have small boxes are in Portrait while the ones with large boxes are in Landscape?
If so, you can get bigger boxes on the Portrait ones by clicking "Allow Black" in iMovie 11. (iMovie 09 did not have this feature.)

  • How to get random Ken Burns effect?

I am working on a video slide show as gift for someone.  There are hundreds of photos so I obviously do not want to try create a unique feeling Ken Burns effect for every photo.  I tried adding the Ken Burns effect to multiple images at once but the movements end up being identical, save zooming in vs out.  I am on FCPX 10.0.7.  Any advice would be a life saver!  I would hate to migrate the project into iMovie and back for this.
If this is not something FCPX can do natively, I am more than happy to purchase a plugin if anyone can point the way
    Thanks!
    Doug

As far as I can tell, FCPX already does what you want. Admittedly, I absolutely ***abhor*** iMovie... have not used it since iMovie HD (6) and really didn't like the newer versions at all. I simply will not use it — so I wasn't exactly sure what you were talking about...  And Ken Burns? Never use it myself although I do see why it's popular.
Then I wrote this whole other message about ... well doesn't matter now...
Then I started thinking: FCPX has a facial recognition feature... color correction... grouping clips... other stuff... why wouldn't it use that info in Ken Burns.
Then I went into FCPX and tried out a few things, and "Lo AND Behold: EUREKA!" -- I think it's in there! (I am, however, basing it on this one image I tried... keep that in mind.)
Facial Recognition is  in the list of  import options:
I suspect all you need is Find People.
Then, in the storyline, when you first apply the Ken Burns crop:
Those two rectangles are the ones FCPX picked initially -- all I've done here is click on the Ken Burns button. That's a pretty d#@~ good guess! (I'm impressed -- and that pillarboxing you see is actually part of the image! -- it's a copy of an old slide I converted to digital.)  I have not seen this kind of "pick" in any other kind of image I've tried (and I've seen some pretty funky ones), and, it probably won't work without the Find People attribute checked on import (You can go back and reimport all the same images/clips as before, the newer metadata versions should simply replace the older versions without duplications.)
It will not, however, randomly pick the direction (AFAICT) -- but you can reverse the "pick" with the double curved arrows icon at the top left corner.
