    Hello:
Mute your computer before you shut it down.
Incidentally, that "annoying sound" is an audible notification that the Mac has successfully performed self-tests on startup.  If you get anything other than a single chime, you have trouble.

  • Final cut x - Customize interfaced / turn off magnetic timeline

    Hi.
    2 vital questions about FCPX:
    1. Can you turn off the magnetic timeline?
    2. Can you change the hideous gray-letters-on-black-background interface and make it black letters on a light gray or white background?
I've searched (including the manual with no index) and can't find these answers.  Thanks in advance for your help.
In case you're wondering why these questions are vital to me:
I use FCP 7 and I make movies.  Narrative pieces.  Not youtube videos.  So the magnetic timeline is like trying to work while someone snaps a rubber band on your face.  I'm sure it's useful when you're editing "Mikey Bit My Finger," or "David After the Dentist," or some sports event, but it's the opposite of useful for narrative work.
And the ridiculous white-on-black interface...? Seriously?  There's a reason books aren't printed that way.  I'm not staring at that hideous black screen all day.  No way.  That's a deal breaker.
Anyway, I'm going to have to switch editing systems in a year or so once FCP 7 no longer is installable on new machines, so I figure I better find out these 2 vital questions.  Otherwise, it's off to Adobe Premiere or (shudder) Avid
    Thanks for your answers.

Yep, click the icon for the clip you want to move, hold down the P key and place it anywhere. It would be nicer if I could just turn the magnetic function off in the timeline. Much nicer... Because that clip I just moved will return  toward the beginning of the timeline the moment I move something upstream via trimming it. PLEASE allow us to turn it off. It's silly not to have that option.
On the background color, Premier is the same way, as is everything Adobe now. I have the Creative Cloud and use Audition for a bit of fast audio sweetening because FCPX, isn't as good at it. Premier also handles the MTS files that clients bring in from their DSLRs... FCPX doesn't handle those natively. Why? (And lets not get into a discussion of "wrappers", please. Just do it.) Also silly and disfunctional. Apple is supposed to be all about "functional" but the interoperability with common files types like MTS leaves much to be desired. I'm an Apple evangelist since 1983, and this program, after using FCP since inception, feels more like a downgrade. Fast? Yeah, but that's not the bigggest priority in creating. Flexible? Talks with Premier or Avid? Shares and plays well with others? That's what we need: Openness and options. Keep working on it. Thanks.

  • How do I turn off messages on my iMac after upgrading to Yosemite?

How do I turn off messages on my iMac after upgrading to Yosemite?

    Hi,
    Open the Messages app.
Go to the Preferences item in the app's Menu.
Select the account pane in the Preferences.
Each active account should have a tick in the Enable this Account box.
    This can be unticked.
This will stop accounts logging in but will not stop the app Launching in certain circumstances.
First of all check the app is Quit before shutting down the computer.
The fact the app is open even if all windows are hidden can cause the app to restart when you Start up the computer.
Messages is a  Multiple window app and using the red button on the top left of a window only closes that window and does not Quit the app.
Also check the System Preferences > Users and Groups > your account > Login Items tab.
This will list items that are set to Start up when the computer does.
I have a couple of External Drive on other computers, some Anti Virus software and the common iTunes Helper plus an old version of TextExpander that will work if I launch the Preference Pane this way.

  • How to turn off sound when iMac starts up

how to turn off or turn down sound when my imac starts up

    debrafromusa,
This would be an extremely bad idea, the start up tone is there for a reason. It tells you when your system is attempting to  boot, it is also necessary in the even resets like a PRAM reset are done. There is software to mask the sound however as stated it is a very poor idea.
Also, why turn it off. Why not simply put the display to sleep when the machine is not in use. You can easily do that in System Preferences - Energy Saver

How to switch off my main screen (Imac 24") to use an external proyector?
It's not comfortable when you want to see a nice movie!

As I already said in my first reply post, you cannot turn off the iMac's display. The best you can do is display black, which many applications that have a +full screen+ mode will do, if the full screen mode is on the other display.
Alternately, you can move the menu bar (along with Dock and disk icons) from the iMac's screen to the second display. This is done in System Preferences Displays pane Arrangement tab, by dragging the white bar in the diagram from one screen to the other. Once the menu bar and other features are on the second display, the only thing showing on the iMac's display should be the Desktop background. If you pick a Desktop background that is all black, your iMac's display will be showing a black screen (although it will still not be turned off).

  • Safari and webmail email alerts - how to turn off?

One of the webmails I use has annoying feature - it alerts me with every incoming email. Safari icon starts to jump at the Dock and a small window appears telling me that I have email!
I have searched my webmail settings but there is no way to turn it off. So there should be one at the Safari or Mac settings but I did not find anything there either! I have turned off pop-ups but apparently this small "thing" that appears is not considered a pop-up.
Can anyone help me how to turn off this distraction?
    Sasha
P.S. My Mac is iMac Intel and Safari is 2.0.4

There is an option under Preferences > Auto-Correction to "Automatically detect email and web addresses." You want that one unchecked. There is also a link inspector, second from the right, with options to enable hyperlinks or make all hyperlinks inactive. Seems contradictory to me & I've found that if a document already has some linked text, changing these preferences doesn't change the existing links. And, if you paste in something with a link the link will still be active.

  • How to turn off receiving apple support communities emails

how to turn off receiving apple support communities emails on imac and ipad?

In addition ,you can  go to Your Stuff - Profile- Manage Email Notifications (in the upper right hand Actions box) - either check individual threads to remove or click in the top box which will check all the threads and then click on Remove Email Notifications.
Also check the tutorial for managing email subscriptions
You might also make sure that you haven't subscribed to one of the communities by mistake.
Go to the community that you are receiving the emails from and the same box called "Actions" will appear there just like it does next to the individual question.  Make sure that you are not reciveing email notifications for that community.  Probably the community  where you asked your question.  Typically that is what causes people to get 100's of email notifications. I think that this is not included in the tutorial so a lot of people miss it.

  • Yoga 2 Pro -- how to turn off switching mode notifications -- e.g. "tent mode", "tablet mode", etc?

Does anyone know how to turn off the notifications that pop up in the upper right corner telling you that you have just changed from one configuration to another -- e.g. changing from tent mode to tablet mode?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Just disable it -
Task manager > Startup > Click "Yoga Picks" > Click "disable"
Next time you start your computer no more annoying pop ups.  If you want to be annoyed again you can always re-enable it.

  • I simply want to know how to turn off iCloud* without losing my contacts

Call me old fashioned, but I really do NOT want to use iCloud EXCEPT for ONE THING*: and that's to find my phone, ipad or laptop if it goes missing.
Having said that, I have figured out how to turn off icloud on my ipad and my iphone (I am not using the phone as a phone, just as a glorified ipod) while keeping the "find my ipad/iphone" function active, BUT
I can't quite figure out how to do it on my laptop.
I seem to have done it already for photos, and for the calendar, (I know this from checking iCloud to see what it's got) but just cannot figure out how to turn it off for contacts.
And YES, I've backed up all of those things at LEAST 3 different ways, I just don't want the Cloud to be one of them.
So can anyone tell me how to turn off contacts in the cloud without it also magically deleting them in my laptop? (I had it happen on the ipad, that's why I'm worried.)
Thank you for understanding-I'm older and this stuff just keeps getting more complicated and I'm a simple person. I'll back up my own stuff!

If you are refering to documents such as Pages and Numbers files....
The only way around this is to "save as" you icloud documents using the associated app to a local folder on your mac.  Then turn off icloud.
Of course, when you sign off of icloud, the docs are removed from the mac, but remain in icloud.  In the future when you sign back in, the documents are available to you again.
Oh, and the icloud documents are also stored locally in ...
    ~/Library/Mobile Documents
Note that Library in the user's home folder is now hidden, so you'll have to set Finder to view hidden files.
The Mobile Documents folder has subfolder where copies of the doc/data files are stored.
You can move these files to another folder to save them.

  • I'm using same icloud and same apple ID on two iphones. Now i get calls from same number on both iphones at the same time. How to turn off that?

I'm using same icloud and same apple ID on two iphones. Now i get calls from same number on both iphones at the same time. How to turn off that?

Apple ID's are not device specific, so when you changed it on the iPad 2 it changed it on the iPhone 4 as well, since it's the same account still. What you need to do is create a second Apple ID (so you'll have two accounts, one for iPhone 4 and a seperate one for iPad 2).
To create a new Apple ID on your iPad 2:
    1) Go into Settings > Store.
    2) If you are already signed in, tap your Apple ID on the screen and you will be given a few options, one of which is to sign out of your account.
    3) After you sign out, now click the "Sign in" button.
    4) Tap "Create New Apple ID" and follow the instructions on-screen.
