How to turn off startup sound on iMac desktop ?

can anybody tell me how to turn off the annoying sound on startup with the Imac ?
i cannot find it anywhere in the setup.

Hello:
Mute your computer before you shut it down.
Incidentally, that "annoying sound" is an audible notification that the Mac has successfully performed self-tests on startup. If you get anything other than a single chime, you have trouble.

Do you mean the sound it makes when you log into Skype? If you go into Skype preferences (just press "Cmd - ," if you can't find it) under "Notifications", and then under "Details", when the dropdown menu next to "Event:" says "When I sign in", you can uncheck the tickbox next to "Play sound". well , you're right, but the law argues that a digital camera looks like a digital camera so it's easier to spot by the person being photographed. also, a digital camera has no other function but to take pictures, so one can't assume it's being used for any othe purpose. on the othe hand, a phone can't be identified as a camera right away. so it's easier to take pictures of unwilling subjects.

In the US, it is possible to turn off the sound, but not just by using the mute switch (I know, I tried that and it did not work for me).

I need to have the camera silent because I mostly use it to scan portions of books at the library for research. Yes, that is allowed. I checked with the librarian. However, I do not want to bother other patrons of the library with the constant shutter sound. It is simply too annoying. So, I'm glad there is a solution out there.

How to turn off connection sound

When I connect my iPod to my iPod speakers it makes a sound that I previously disabled. However, yesterday I reset my iPod back to its factory settings just to remove any issues that may have developed with the software. Now I can't figure out how to turn off the connection sound. I have disabled all the sounds in the Settings menu, but can't disable the connection sound.
Any ideas?

How to turn off surround sound?

I am using Adobe Audition 3.0 for recording and mixing/mastering my music. I also use effects like reverb.
The problem is, when I mix it down, it turns into an audio file that has surround sound.
I don't want this, because you can hear strange sounds like echoes coming from the two back speakers, which causes the song to sound much more worse than when it comes just from two speakers.
So my question is: how can I turn off surround sound?

Since MP3 files don't inherently support Surround, I suspect that the reason for your strange rear noises has nothing to do with the format you are saving in at all, and everything to do with the way your speakers are set up to run on the PC. If you go to the Control Panel's 'Sounds' tab, you may find that there's a very simple solution to this!

Digital camera's do have a sounds when a picture is being taken but this noise isn't artificial like in mobile phones it is the shutter mechanism. Some digital camera's shutter makes a low or no noise but they do have a beep to give an indication that a picture is being taken. In countries where this is compulsory by law it should give some indication that a picture is being taken.
Also please take into account one device is a phone and the other a dedicated camera.

How do I turn off startup sound?

Every computer I ever had, the first thing I do is to turn off the startup sound because it is very annoying in a public place and sometimes in a quiet place. I have not been able to find out how to trun it off on my Air. I asked the guys at the stores and they just say you can't. That is really dumb. I turned off my speaker but that is not a practical way because I may not remember to turn it off when I shut down.
The question is how do I turn it off permenantly.

Turn "Instant Record" on in the setting by pressing the Play/Pause and Delete buttons at the same time. When it comes out of sleep mode it doesn't make a sound.
Being able to turn off the display while recording would also be useful or at least be able to dim it. I've disturbed some people while recording a play in a dark theatre. And I know it bothers me when someone is playing with there cell phone or other device in a low light situation.

In addition to V.K's suggestion, you can put your MacBook to sleep by closing the lid, instead of shutting down. Waking from sleep makes no startup sound. The only time a MacBook needs to be shut down is to remove the battery.

I got this new IPhone 4s from the compnay I work, installed Good For Enterprise, syncing emails good. But not able to turn off sound for email notification.
I tried this Good -> Preferences -> Sounds and Notification -> New Email->Playsound off.
But still I get annoying notification sound all the time..
