How to turn on a MacBook Pro 15" from an external keyboard?

Greetings,
Is there a way to power on a MacBook Pro 15" from an external keyboard?
Insights and assistance appreciated.
Best regards,
Pierson

Nope. My setup is my laptop an external monitor with Bluetooth keyboard and trackpad. I keep the laptop lid shut. If I have to turn it on, I have to open the lid and press the power button. But I rarely turn it off.

  • How do I tell a Macbook Pro age from the serial number?

I just purchased a used MacBook Pro and would like to figure out exactly how old it is. Can this be determined by the serial number?

  • How do I get my Macbook Pro to detect an external display?

    Hi there.
I just bought a new MacBook Pro today.
Everything about it is wonderful, except:  When I plug an external display into the Thunderbolt port using a Minidisplay port to VGA adapter, it doesn't send a signal to the external monitor.  The screen on my Macbook will go blue for a second, and then the windows freeze.  The mouse will be movable for a bit (up to a minute), but nothing is clickable.  Strangely, it seems as though it's functioning as if there were a second monitor (I can move the mouse off-screen as though it's going over to another display).  But then the spinning rainbow wheel starts and never stops.  If I unplug the Minidisplay port to VGA adapter, the Macbook will snap back into professional mode and everything works again.
If I try to boot the computer up with the Minidisplay port to VGA adapter already pluged in, it simply won't boot up (I get a gray screen with an apple and nothing more).
I tried using gfxCardStatus set to "discreet only" and I still have this problem.  I tried to run a firmware update, but my comp seems to be entirely up-to-date already (just set it up today).
The monitor and adapter seem to be working fine, and function as an external display when pluged into the Mini-DVI port on my 2009 Macbook running Snow Leopard.
I guess my question is, what's causing this?  Is this an adapter problem?  Like, do I need a special adapter to use with a Thunderbolt port as opposed to the one I'm using which works when pluged into a Mini-DVI port?

The only thing that I can suggest is trying a different adapter - such as this one from Monoprice.
I don't know if that's the root of your problem, though. Does the external monitor have DVI? You could get a Thunderbolt to DVI adapter from Monoprice - here - and give that a shot.

  • MacBook Pro resumes from sleep, but keyboard types symbols as opposed to correct letters

    Hi, all,
Having been a mac owner for a few years now, I guess it actually shows the quality of the product that this is the first time I've had to post on this site.
I've recently upgraded from my 2008 model MacBook to an early 2011 model MacBook Pro 17" with Lion. This machine was brand new when I purchased it, and is a very lovely bit of kit.
The problem comes from the sleep functionality. Approximately one time of three, when I resume from sleep, the keyboard will be malfunctioning. What I mean by this is that when I type letters, they come out as symbols instead. I haven't been sharp enough to get a direct mapping of A-Z yet (I will do next time), but these aren't the 'ALT' key symbols (å∂ß∫å˙∂©ß), they're more like this (which is what I typed into Notepad last time this happened) =
    ƒ∆∂∆ßåß∂ƒ∂∆ß∆å˚¬ß∆¬ß
In order to resolve this, I need to restart the computer, which, thus far, has resolved the issue every time. That said, it's a bit of a pain, so would like to know what's going on and if there is any way to prevent it.
All the software on the mac is up to date at time of writing, there have been no expansions to the machine (yet), so it's exactly as shipped. It's the 2.2GHz i7 Quad Core device, and is the first one supporting the thunderbolt graphics connector.
Does anyone have any idea about this? Could it be a hardware problem (if so, I want to return it asap to get it sorted). I've looked all over google for this, but not found a single result, so was keen to see if anyone on here had experienced it before I start the arduous process of working out if it's a hardware issue.
    Cheers,
    SB

No one else experienced anything like this, then?

  • How do I get my macbook pro to 'see' my external HD attached to Airport BS?

Hi, I'm still finding my way around my mac and have come up against a wall!
I have a Maxtor External Hard Drive attached via USB to my Airport Base Station (firmware 7.1)
I can see the Hard Drive is listed in the Airport Utility, I have ticked enable file sharing.
Problem is how to get my mac to see the drive wirelessly?
Before I connected the Hard Drive I had connected a USB printer, by using the 'Printer & Fax' set up utility on my mac it soon was able to print with no problems.
I can connect the Hard Drive directly to my mac and the disk appears on my desktop.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    That's what I read here...
    http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/sharing.html
    "Instant drive sharing.
New to AirPort Extreme, AirPort Disk turns almost any external USB hard drive into a shared drive. Simply connect the drive to the USB port on the back of your AirPort Extreme and — voila — all the documents, videos, photos, and other files on the drive instantly become available to anyone on the secure network, Mac and PC alike. It’s perfect for backups, collaborative projects, and more.
A simple-to-use AirPort Disk Utility gives you more setup options. You could set the disk to become available whenever you connect to the network. You could set up password-protected accounts for everybody on the network, or allow read-only access to certain files and folders. The choice is yours."
But have you looked/clicked on the Airport Icon, (if you have that in your Menu Bar), or in Network Control Panel>Configure>Airport Tab, to see if there is perhaps an "Airdisk" in the Network drop down?

  • How do I fix my MacBook Pro that continues to abruptly turn off, no matter what I am doing? Even after deleting items/trying resolution methods?

How can I fix my MacBook Pro? I have a relatively recent model of the MacBook Pro. I’ve been running Mavericks.
For the past few days, it has been randomly clicking off by itself, I guess crashing. I would be online or just doings on it, sometimes nothing at all, and the screen would go black, the computer would turn off. Then, I would proceed to try to turn it back on, and it won’t turn on for several minutes, no matter what buttons you push. I tried doing an SMC reset for myself. It did not help much. I deleted all my personal files, including plug-ins, especially flash player. I thought that helped, but the computer proceeded to turn off minutes later. Then, out of frustration, (as I have done twice or so before since having the computer) I did what may be called a factory reset for my computer. I erased the current operating system information/memory in disk utility, and then went on to reinstall OS X. This was working fine, and then, a few minutes into the downloading process, my computer turned off once again.
Now, I have no system to operate on. I keep turning the computer back on to try to do it again. But now, the computer tries to do a remote or internet recovery, and tries to re-download an operating system using my WiFi. I’m sure this would be successful, but the computer can’t function for more than a minute or two without crashing/turning off.
I am fairly certain that my power button is NOT stuck.
I did earlier notice the fan making noise, before doing the SMC reset.
The computer did seem to say there was no batteries available at one point.
(But all of this was okay after some point, and I was just doing the reset to try to correct the turning off the system was still doing)
A week or two ago, I did have a glitch where my desktop picture was flashing and acting weird, and other functions on my computer keyboard not working, like volume, keyboard brightness, etc. But I did fix it.
I have not ever had much on this Macbook pro. I do not download applications. I do not store nearly any files on the computer. I usually only use the flash player plug-in. This computer is only used for doing work/business, and for personal use online.
I can’t see why I would have so many problems.
Is it possible that erasing the memory twice or so before is causing an error or issue in the drive?
What is the root of this problem, and how can I fix it on my own?
I can’t really make any progress on the computer since it turns off after only a minute or two no matter what you are trying to do.
    What do I do now?

    kapots3v4,
if your MacBook Pro doesn’t stay active long enough to perform an OS X Internet Recovery, then you should make an appointment at your nearest Apple store or Apple-authorized service provider to have them diagnose what’s ailing it.

  • Hi, how do i stop my macbook pro not to automatically connect to a wifi connection that is not my preferred network? i want to automatically connect my macbook to my preferred network everytime i turn on my laptop. thank you.

hi, how do i stop my macbook pro not to automatically connect to a wifi connection that is not my preferred network? i want to automatically connect my macbook to my preferred network everytime i turn on my laptop. thank you.

System Preferences > Network > WiFi
To give a network the highest priority, drag the name of the network to the top of the list. This is the network your computer will attempt to join first.

  • How do I stop Photoshop from launching when I turn on my MacBook Pro?

I subscribe to Adobe CC. Every time I turn on my MacBook Pro, Photoshop CC launches. I want this to stop. When I right click on the Photoshop app > Options > Open at Login is NOT checked. And in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items >  Photoshop is not there. What can I do? I am sure it is a simple fix. Thanks!

As I mentioned when I right click on the Photoshop app in the dock > Options > Open at Login is NOT checked. And in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items >  Photoshop is not there in the list. I do not have any utilities installed that automatically launch applications and I do not mess with scripts or even know how to.
I tried calling Adobe's poor outsourced customer service and was told there was a 2-5 minute wait, but after waiting 22 minutes, I had to hang up.

When I turn on my MacBook Pro and when I am at the login screen, the background is white rather than steel gray. What is wrong and how can I fix it?

  • How can I shut off the automatic login when I turn on my MacBook Pro?

Ever since I updated to Yosemite I have been forced to enter my password whenever I turn on my MacBook Pro. I went to System Preferences/Users & Groups and see that the automatic login option is set to off, but it is shaded and I can't use the dropdown menu, even though I've unlocked it.
Is this a common issue? Am I just going to have to get used to signing in every time? I'm the only one who uses it, and it's a little annoying.
I've tried searching for help in the discussions and also on google, but I'm not finding any answers.
    Help, please!

Did you turn on FileVault when you upgraded to Yosemite? If it is on then a login password is required (sort of obviously). You can tell whether it is on by going to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Security & Privacy and click FileVault at the top and see if the words "Turn off FileVault" are in the button. I'm the only one who uses my Mac also, but the remote possibility of it being stolen makes it worth it to me to have FileVault turned on and a password required. You showed a kernel panic file from OS X, apprantly Log Me In is installed into OS X or running when you log in.
You should be using the developers installer/unistaller to remove Log Me In from OS X.
Somehow it's in OS X, I don't know, but it's there and you need to remove it. I'm not dealing with Windows, just OS X.
Talk to Log Me In people and find out what is installed where so you can do a manual deletion out of OS X.
If that doesn't work, you have to reboot holding the Shift key down manually search for any Log Me In or Himachi files on your computer, in your System/Library/Extensions folder too, use the free Easy Find.

  • How do i authorize my macbook pro to download apps

how do i authorize my macbook pro to download apps

    Authorization and Deauthorization
Macs:  iTunes Store- About authorization and deauthorization.
Windows: How to Authorize or Deauthorize iTunes | PCWorld.
In iTunes you use the Authorize This Computer or De-authorize This Computer option under the Store menu in iTunes' menubar. For Windows use the ALT-S keys to access it. Or turn on Windows 7 and 8 iTunes menus: iTunes- Turning on iTunes menus in Windows 8 and 7.
More On De-authorizing Computers (contributed by user John Galt)
You can de-authorize individual computers, but only by using those computers. The only other option is to "de-authorize all" from your iTunes account.
      1. Open iTunes on a computer
      2. From the Store menu, select "View my Account..."
      3. Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
      4. Under "Computer Authorizations" select "De-authorize All".
      5. Authorize each computer you still have, as you may require.
You may only do this once per year.
After you "de-authorize all" your authorized computers, re-authorize each one as required.
If you have de-authorized all computers and need to do it again, but your year has not elapsed, then contact: Apple - Support - iTunes - Contact Us.
