How to turn on "Attributes" in Lightroom 5 Library?

I'm in the Library Module of Lightrroom 5, grid view.  I must have hit something by mistake as I can no longer view photos by "Attributes"- stars, etc.
Any suggestions?

  • How do I place the Lightroom Library on an External Drive?

Q: How do I change the location of the Lightroom Library on an external disk drive whilst also ensuring that lightroom maintains the connection with the new location?
A: The easiest way is to copy the folder containing the Lightroom Catalog and the Previews to the new disk drive, navigate to the new folder location, then double click on the Catalog file to relaunch.
Note: the Lightroom catalog and preview package use the
    lrcat and
    lrdata extension respectively.

    1. Drag the library to the external drive, launch iTunes with the Option key held down, click on Choose Library, and point it there.
    2. Get a second. Having the backups on the same drive as the original data won't help when that drive fails.

Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

  • How do I backup my Lightroom library ?

    Hi ,
I am very new to Lightroom I am wondering how I would go about backing up my library when I used Apple Aperture It would have a file called " Aperture Library " and I would just copy that over to my external hard drive every month. How would I do this in Lightroom ?
    Thanks !

This question has been asked many times, and is a serious one that people unfortunately, often haven't thought of and can cause big issues. If you are serious about your amateur photography, or regard your images as important in any way, I always advocate a serious approach to backup and archiving.  As such, here's what I do...
I employ a 3-tier backup system, with a 4th tier for important images.
Stage 1: System Backup: I use a Mac, and use the built in Time Machine incremental backup function which provides me with a regular automated backup of my system.  This includes all documents and all of the images currently on my Mac.  If you're on a Win machine, then I suggest using a similar backup application.  Time Machine backs up automatically to a wireless external drive 1.
Stage 2: Image Backup: I use Adobe Lightroom4 for my image processing and management.  I only keep a maximum of 3 months worth of images on my Mac, and each month I move the previous 4th months images to external drive 2. This ensures all my images are backed up on a separate external drive.
Stage 3: Online storage: I then upload all hi-res jpg versions of the images I want to keep to my Zenfolio account.  I sometimes decide to display these, and other times not.  However, my Zenfolio package includes  an unlimited upload limit, so I take advantage of this superb service.  I cannot recommend Zenfolio enough - it is a fantastic service for photographers and is way more than just a gallery host.
Stage 4: Important images: For vital images (weddings, model shoots, and other shoots I consider important to me) On import of my images to Lightroom,  I use the Lightroom function  to also make a backup copy of these images to a 3rd external drive.
Hope that helps you, and gives some insight into how I structure my backups etc.

  • Lightroom library over 120gb - any idea how to down-size easily?

    Hi
I am new to this forum but have been using Lightroom V2 for quite a while, hence my Lightroom library is now taking up over 120gb on my Macbook Pro hardrive (OSX 10.5) Ideally I would like to keep all the images in there (Everything in my library is immaculately organised: tagged, flagged, keyworded, put in collections etc.), but as lot of the images are huge files, this is just not possible, as my harddrive is only 180gb.
Can anyone think of an easy (ish) was of reducing the size of the files, without having to export each collection, and re-importing, as this mess up my organisation, and take a long time.
Any ideas are really appreciated! And any tips, so I don't get myself into this mess again in the future would be helpful too :o)
    Many thanks
    Alice

Unless you have a lot of images, it would be unusual for the catalogue to be as big as 120 gb. From your reply, one assumes most of this 120Gb is edited files (PSD, TIF etc). However, one possibility is that you may also have the originals in that folder - I asked where the originals were, and you said where they were backed up.
So using Finder open up the folder where your lrcat file and the lrdata folder are located, and see what else is there. It's a common mistake to have picture files in that folder too.
Once we're sure where files are, then sorting it out will be less confusing.

  • Turn off "faces" in LightRoom 4.2?

I have hundreds if not thousands of "faces" that have been culled from my library and I would like to know how to turn this function off in Lightroom 4.1?
I have looked through the prefs and the menus but cannot see anything referring to "faces"
    Thanks,
    Henry

What I realized is that these must be 240x240 "faces" images that were created in iPhoto and then transferred over to LightRoom when I migrated? There were not that many, 500-600, so I just deleted them.

  • The lightroom library is corrupt

    hi,
i use lightroom very often and my problem is it says me to backup my library so when i do so after that it checks whether my library is alright then it shows a message saying that "we'r sorry the lightroom library is corrupt and cannot be used" and lightroom closes what shall i do but then there is an option SKIP and then the lightroom opens with my previous library but then i have about 60 pictures in there and all worked upon so i dont want to loose the work on them anytime so how may i correct my library and i also wanted to know how can i make one more library thanks for any help

    I'm experiencing similar problems...
My library works fine in the latest beta, but when I try to start the trial version of the official 1.0 release, it wants to check the integrity of my database/library. It then finds out it is broken and turns off.
If I choose to not test the integrity, it crashes after a while when converting the database.
Since I've a backup, I can still, with no problems, run the beta.
But I'ld like to upgrade, but there seems to be no way of exporting my images together with the captions and the keywords :( Even if there are ways of exporting and importing it with develope settings.
Does anyone know where the problem might lie? Or if there is any way to, in the beta, "rebuild" the library/database..?
    Thanks a lot in advance,
    BR

  • I simply want to know how to turn off iCloud* without losing my contacts

Call me old fashioned, but I really do NOT want to use iCloud EXCEPT for ONE THING*: and that's to find my phone, ipad or laptop if it goes missing.
Having said that, I have figured out how to turn off icloud on my ipad and my iphone (I am not using the phone as a phone, just as a glorified ipod) while keeping the "find my ipad/iphone" function active, BUT
I can't quite figure out how to do it on my laptop.
I seem to have done it already for photos, and for the calendar, (I know this from checking iCloud to see what it's got) but just cannot figure out how to turn it off for contacts.
And YES, I've backed up all of those things at LEAST 3 different ways, I just don't want the Cloud to be one of them.
So can anyone tell me how to turn off contacts in the cloud without it also magically deleting them in my laptop? (I had it happen on the ipad, that's why I'm worried.)
Thank you for understanding-I'm older and this stuff just keeps getting more complicated and I'm a simple person. I'll back up my own stuff!

If you are refering to documents such as Pages and Numbers files....
The only way around this is to "save as" you icloud documents using the associated app to a local folder on your mac.  Then turn off icloud.
Of course, when you sign off of icloud, the docs are removed from the mac, but remain in icloud.  In the future when you sign back in, the documents are available to you again.
Oh, and the icloud documents are also stored locally in ...
    ~/Library/Mobile Documents
Note that Library in the user's home folder is now hidden, so you'll have to set Finder to view hidden files.
The Mobile Documents folder has subfolder where copies of the doc/data files are stored.
You can move these files to another folder to save them.

  • How do I remove an imported iPhoto library at multiple users

There seem to be different ways of sharing an iPhoto library among multiple users on a single Mac and I guess I didn't select the best one ...
My wife and I both have an account on our Mac (I am administrator).
Originally, only on my account we viewed our photos, but my wife wanted to have the same iPhoto access via her account.Makes sense!
Via 'system preferences > share'  I marked the picture folder in which the iPhoto library is stored as a 'shared folder'.
Then in my wifes account, I started iPhoto and I imported the iPhoto library file in this shared folder (and 'yes', I unchecked the option in the preferences menu to avoid copying photos on import ;-)
Well, for the next hours or so, the system started to import the photos ... although my photo library contains more then 10.000 pictures (!!) the status bar during import indicated a shear amount of ±260.000 pictures to be imported (as it turns out it includes the 'faces' as pictures).
To make a long story short - how do I restore iPhoto on my wifes account by e.g. removing/undoing the imported library. I am a bit hesitant in removing the library since it is the library stored in our shared folder and I don't want to delete that library file. I 'just' want it to turn back to the original 'empty' iPhoto on my Wife's account and share our library in a different way.
By the way, although the iPhoto library/events are a mess on my wifes account, it still looks good on my account.
    Thanks.
    D.

Trash the Library in your wife's account.
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • How can i copy songs from another library to my itunes library with homesharing?

How can i copy songs from another library to my itunes library with homesharing?  I see the other libraries, but cannot drag the songs into my library.  The help window says to use the "show menu" at the bottom, but I don't have that menu with itunes 11.

You can do this in 2 ways.
    1) You can enable the sidebar and you can drag and drop like you used to be able to.  To turn on Sidebar in iTunes 11, go to View > Show Sidebar
    2) Another way is to connect to your Home Share from the drop-down menu from the left (where it says Music) and select your Home Share.  Once you are connected to your Home Share, select Music and you should see a button that says "All Items" and on the right, you should see the Import button.  To copy, select the songs you want to import and then click on Import.

  • Lightroom Library on a server with external HD connected via FW400

I plan to set up a Lightroom library on a MacMini which I like to use as a file server and will be connected with an external harddrive like a drobo or any other storage box (several TB). Now in case the whole library including previews is sitting on a storage device connected to a MacMini which is again running as my server and connected with a fast 100MB network line, I am concerned that I open the library with a MacPro (very fast) but this will then take long (50MB Tiff files) to work on. How does LR handle the files, what will be loaded (just the preview-JPG)?
I would be interested to know this before I change it to such a setting.

Thx John, I plan to use the library with min 2 people and min 2 computers. So I have the need to share it. To do that with the Macpro does not fully fit in my original network concept. I will try the speed with the current hardware in order to see the actual speed, but I know you are correct. Anyhow, I might look into it from a different perspective and use the server library on the macmini for archival purposes and have a frequently used library on the main working machine (macpro). This is unfortunatlly a bit more complicated and I am not knowledgable enough yet in LR to use it that way. I am sure I can create projects for each bigger fotoshoot which I then can move between LR libraries. This should give me the chance to store the work of a project between computers. Do you agree?

iOS device backups are stored in your iTunes library.
Move your iTunes library to an external drive.

  • How do I get my existing photo library from iPhoto to Photoshop?

How do I get my existing photo library from iPhoto to Photoshop?

    Hello MWWWB,
Unlike iPhoto, Photoshop is only an editor. It does not store or organize images. In iPhoto preferences, you can choose Photoshop as an editor. You will then get a choice when you double click on an iPhoto thumbnail to use iPhoto or Photoshop to make edits. But Photoshop does not have a library to store images like iPhoto.
You may want to use Adobe Bridge or Lightroom to help name and organize your pictures. You can Export your iPhoto Library to a folder and manage the exported images there.
Personally, I hate the arcane manner iPhoto stores and organizes images. I use it only for photos from my iPhone.

  • Character Palette unexpectedly pop out, how to turn it off?

    Hi
Does anyone know how to turn the Character Palette window off?
It keeps on popping up on my computer screen(appear and disappearing repeatedly and won't stop).
    Thank you!

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
Try deleting the Character Palette preference file: /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag this file from the Preferences folder: com.apple.CharPaletteServer.plist to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot.
    See if that helps ...
