How to turn on my mac

I was installing GIMP for Mac (from official web site) and suddenly my mac freezed. I turned it off with Power Button, and when i tried to turn it on again, it was on the apple screen infinite time. I entered Verbose mode, and i've seen that the problem was: "disk0s2: media is not present" (message repeated infinite times) I tried the solution that says that I have to repair disk. I put the Mac OS X 10.6.2 install CD and I entered to disk utility in the installation program. I made a disk repair and I tried to make a permission repair, but that gives me an error with all units and Macintosh HD disappears from disc units list. I want know how to solve this problem or how to reinstall MAC OS X 10.6.2 from CD without losing my installed apps. Thanks

Welcome to Apple Discussions, Airiso.
You can re-install OS X without losing anything...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8177.html
But it does sound like you may have a bad disk. Do you have a copy of Repair Disk log?
Run repair disk again and see what comes up.

I am exhausted just getting to the point of being allowed to ask my question.  I recently decided to upgrade from an old PowerBook G4 that we have used for years, and am using now.  I bought a new Mac Mini and a reconditioned Apple A1267 Monitor that was working beautifully when hooked to a slightly newer PowerBook in the store.  Both the Mini and the monitor are plugged in, and attached to each other but I feel light a dolt.  I cannot even figure out how to turn them on or even get a power light to come on. Can someone help me?

How is the Mini coonected to the momitor?
Does the power button n the mini not work?

Are you recovering Lion or later Time Machine backup with a Lion or later machine?
If you are, then use this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
Other Time Machine restore options are here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
Note, if recovering from a PowerPC Mac (iMac G5, PowerMac, Mac Mini G4, iBook, Powerbook), this tip is important:
    http://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2295
Otherwise use the recommended restore option with whatever backup software you used initially.

Yes. Usually it's Microsoft taking ideas from Apple. Nice to see the opposite for a change.

The idea that users don't need to access their Library folder is preposterous if they own the computer. When trying fix an issue, for example fully remove Firefox, or any number of things, why add a step? This is tantamount to if Apple had hidden the Extensions Manager (not saying they DID, but if they HAD). Why hide the Library? Why hide /etc? The more people learn about their systems, the less problems in the long run. Not that I'm trying to put myself out of work, bless their lazy, black little hearts, users keep me on the gravy train, however the number of issues avoided would out weigh the potential issues.
Regardless, my apologies to the original poster for the threadjack, the image above is useless. Chmod as linked seems to work just fine, though it won't get rid of that idiotic "do you want to open everything again on reboot" check box.

  • How to turn on the sync service in Mac ?

My Macbook Pro runs on OSX Version 10.9.2. I am trying to back up my contacts from my blackberry, but having difficulty finding out how to turn on the sync service in the Mac ? Any help is much appreciated

    Hi there jonhelp,
You may find the information in the article below helpful.
    About SyncServices
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5847
    OS X Mavericks
OS X Mavericks v10.9 and later do not use SyncServices. Instead, Mavericks supports sharing your information using several network-based and cloud-based solutions. If you want to sync your information across multiple devices and computers, you should use one or more of these methods. These include iCloud, CardDAV servers, CalDAV servers, and servers that utilize the Exchange ActiveSync protocol.

I don't know how to fix this. If anybody could help me I would appreciate it so much!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
To transfer files from another PC, you need a code that you have to insert in your Mac. As the code will be different, you have to turn off your Mac and start the migration again as you did it. Unfortunately, you can't do anything more

    Hello, what OSX version?
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • How to turn on auto capitalization on my mac?

    Hey guys,
I want to know how to turn on auto capitalization on my mac. Because this helps me to type faster in pages, keynote, etc.
    Could y'all help me out?

because Apple has most of its products, phones tablets and software that start with small letters despite being proper nouns, in Apple's world it's normal to use small letters for proper nouns and start sentences with small letters.
you will have to get used to the shift button and get a bit slow on your typing. after some time you'll get used to it.
this does sound frustrating but i agree with other users that the fact that you are using an expensive Mac does not relegate you to inferior word processors. go ahead and install office for Mac and enjoy!

  • How can I turn off my mac completely

I checked the file "/private/var/log/daily.out" which generated by command "periodic daily".
The log shows Mac do this command at 3:15 AM everyday since I install the system.
I'm surely I shut down Mac everyday and never works at that time.
Does this means Mac always keep working even if shut it down?
Then, how to turn off it completely?

If it shows that it is running the daily script at 3:15, it isn't shut down. It is just sleeping.
If you just close the lid, it goes to sleep. Unless you actually shut it down prior to closing the lid, it doesn't shut down.
The scripts do not run if it is sleeping or shut down. If it is sleeping, it will run them when it wakes. If it is shut down, it won't run them.

  • I erased my HD and could not install lion. if I turn on the mac now all I see is a folder with a question-mark. How can I install a new operation system?

I erased my HD and could not install lion. if I turn on the mac now all I see is a folder with a question-mark. How can I install a new operation system?

Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
