How to turn on permission to install software into /usr/local (OS 10.8)?

$ ls /usr shows /local
$ ls /usr/local shows permission denied
When I try to install homebrew (which is trying to access /usr/local), permission is denied.
How do I give myself permission?

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and provide /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/Plug-ins/ as the path.

In the pacman man pages it says that the -r flag should not be used to install software to /usr/local instead of /usr. I'm wondering then, what the best way is to use pacman to do exactly that; install software to /usr/local (or even /opt I suppose) instead of /usr. I'm tempted to do it anyways and just respecify the database and logfile paths to the standard root directory. Suggestions?

Well I was using it for code speak for installing anywhere outside of the standard directory really. What I'm really looking at doing is using yaourt to install owncloud from the AUR onto my server, but install it into its own /home folder and symlink it to my http directory rather than having the actual installation on my root directory. So it wouldn't be a standard repo package I'm looking at installing.

I was on the phone today with a video camera company (tech support likely outsourced to overseas). I was having trouble with their videos displaying on my computer.
They asked me for my permission to install software on my computer!!
How is it possible for them to do that from elsewhere?
They are a big name, legit company... but if they can do it with my permission, who can do it without it?
Appreciate any insights on this.

You'd have to open the gate for them to install it first off.
That's why you have settings in Apple menu -> System preferences -> Sharing -> Firewall.
As for trouble displaying videos, many companies like to rely on Windows Media videos which can be viewed if you add http://www.flip4mac.com/
Nobody can install software without your permission unless you deliberately open the gate for them to do it.

<li> If you meant an application page, then they are anot stored as html file anywhere as the page that you see is generated at the run time only, however you can can save that run time page , but its of not much use.
<li> If your intention is to save/backup an apex page, go to the page and export it . This generates a SQL file which you can import into any other apex application and recreate that apex page.
<li> You can also export the entire application as a single file too.

`make install` copies to /usr/local/bin

And /usr/local/bin is apparently not on the default arch $PATH.
This is odd becauase /usr/local/bin is the $bindir apparently for make by default.

echo 'export PATH="${PATH}:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin"' > /etc/profile.d/local-bin.sh && chmod a+x /etc/profile.d/local-bin.sh
But you really should use a PKGBUILD instead of make install so pacman can keep track of your packages in the system.

Linux installer trys to install files in /usr/local/ ?

I changed the directories to install to from /usr to /opt/sunj2re and it still tries
to put files in /usr/local.
At our location /usr/local/ is automounted and we don't have write permissions to
that file system (Yeah. I know local should equal local).
Is there anyway to install sun studio and have it not put anything in /usr/local/?

How to find out most recent installed software update

We recently installed the latest software updates on our intel xserve running 10.5 via the automatic software updates. The guy who installed them does not remember which updates where installed. Upon reboot we sit and sit at the gray screen with apple and spinning gear.
I can boot into single user mode, and my question is how can I find out what updates where installed recently.
Is there a location I can navigate to and just list the updates with there modified date, or is there any softwareupdate command that might list what updates have been installed.
I know this wont fix the issue, but I would like to know if anyone has an idea how I can at least determine what updates were installed.

How to determine serial number of installed software

I need to deactivate and reinstall my version of Acrobat 9 Pro. The trouble is I have the program on two old computers, with different licenses. This is a Student license I need to move and I have the installation DVD and valid serial number.
Is there any way to find the serial number of the installed versions so I can be sure I'm deactivating the right one?

How to format external HD and install software on it? Help, please?

When install programs on my Mac there is only one option for installation - on the internal HD, the other drive plugged in the computer appear with exclamation mark - ie they are not available for installing anything on them.
I want to be able to install some small programs , or a web browsers on external drive , just to see how they works, etc.
How to format an external HD or USB flash drive (if its size is enough)
so it is possible for install a program on it instead on the internal hard drive?

That's the theory. Note that you'll wipe the external drive in the process, so if there's anything you want on it, get it copied elsewhere first. It’s always wise to back up any important stuff on your MacBook of course before doing anything like this (but not to the drive you’re about to use!)
With the drive connected, open Disk Utility, highlight the external drive in the sidebar (that's the drive itself, usually listed by the manufacturer's name and the size of the drive). Select 'partition' in the tab bar, ensure the drop-down on the right is set to 'Mac OS Extended (journaled)', give the partition a name in the box above that (like 'ext HD' or whatever). Click on the 'options' button below the diagram and select 'GUID Partition Table' (very important - it won't boot SL with any other setting). then click the 'apply' button.
Once that's done, close DU and insert the 10.6 install DVD in the MacBook (or whatever the Mac is). After the licence agreement there’ll be a picture of Macintosh HD, but underneath should be a button saying ‘show all disks’. click that and select the external drive, then click install and follow the instructions.
Note that if you do this with the grey install disk that came with the computer, you will only be able to boot that computer with it, as it’s model specific. If the install DVD is a black retail one, it should theoreticaly boot any Mac (but note the licence conditions).
Once the install is complete, boot from the external HD by either selecting it under ‘startup disk’ in Sys Prefs, or by holding down the alt key during restart and selecting the drive from that screen. You can then install any progs you want and try them out from there. (don’t forget to reset the startup disk when you want to reboot from the MacBook).
If you don’t have a DVD, or you want a duplicate of your existing system, go with the clone idea, using CCC (not because it’s better than SuperDuper, but because it’s free if you don’t mind putting up with a few ads while it’s working!)

My 4S was working fine until I upgraded to 5.01. Even the battery was working well. I used the phone for 4 days before I had to charge it. The use was a combination of standby, email, facebook, SMS, MMS and photo. After the upgrade to 5.01, the battery goes form 100% to 0% in 8 hours just on standby. The settings are the same.

you can't. Downgrading software is not supported.
You would have found your answer much faster if you had bothered to search the form before posting. This has been asked and answered over and over again.
