How to turn screen off during disk erasure using Disk Utility?

I am trying to reset my iMac to factory setting -- ie: brand new. I have restarted my iMac using the Installation disc, and then once the iMac has started using this disc, I don't start the installation process, but rather start Disk Utility to erase the disk.
The problem is that the erasure of the disk is a rather lengthly process, and the screen never goes off! I am worried that this might damage the screen, with it being left on for long periods of time with the same image on it -- could burn the image into the actual screen like you sometimes see on flatscreen TV's. Is there any way that I can dim the screen, or, even better, get the screen to go off until I move the mouse again?
Thanks!

are you doing secure erasure? the erasure process is quite fast otherwise. there is no way to turn off the display but nothing will happen to it in such a short time. if you are still worried and have access to another Mac try the following. boot your computer in target mode, connect it to the other mac and erase the disk from there. the screen will display the firewire floating target mode icon. it's not bright at all and it's moving. finally, you can put both screens to sleep from the other computer by entering commandoptioneject. Unfortunately this shortcut doesn't work when you are booted from the install DVD.

  • My external hard drive accidentally switched off during Disk Utility's "erase free space" process.  I restarted the external hard drive and Disk Utility, but now I get the "couldn't mount disk" error when trying to finish the erase.  Please help!

My external Lacie Quadra hard drive accidentally switched off in the middle of "erase free space", and when I switched it back on Disk Utility was hanging.  So I Force Quit Disk Utility and restarted it.  Now when I try to erase I get
"Secure Disk Erase failed with the error: Couldn’t unmount disk."
But "erase free space" seems to work...
What can I do?  I'm erasing as I'm giving the drive to someone else and I wanted to wipe it clean.
Also should I use "erase" or "erase free space" if I want to wipe the drive clean?
    Please help!

Sorry I don't really understand.... there are no partitions on the drive.  How do I repartition it?
And should I use "erasing free space" or "erase" for wiping clean my drive of everything?  Erase seems to be faster last tiem I tried.
    Thanks!

  • Build-in webcam issue: how to turn it off during boot-up?

    Hi,
I have a laptop - Asus K52J & x86_64 - with a built-in webcam. During boot-up, the webcam turns on in - rough guess - 50% of the time. I don't find any obvious pattern when/why the webcam turns on.
Searching this forum/internet doesn't give me a good answer...
1/ I prefer a solution where the webcam is turned off on boot and where I can turn it on when necessary.
2/ I can afford to disable the webcam when running linux.
3/ Disabling in BIOS (often given solution) is not an option.
For 1/, the only solution I got was running following and closing mplayer window. This turns off the webcam, but this is not an efficient manner. Is there another software-based work-around?
    mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video0
For 2/ I hear blacklisting the module is the solution. But how do I find the correct module?
    lsmod
    gives a whole list (pastebin).
Is it videodev and/or v4l2_compat_ioctl32? How can I be sure? Any advice on this for other users with other laptops?
Thanks for any help on advance!
    Kind regards,
      davidbe

Your webcam uses the uvcvideo module so blacklist that one in /etc/rc.conf.

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
If this does not work, then you will have to erase and reinstall Mountain Lion:
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

Are you recovering Lion or later Time Machine backup with a Lion or later machine?
If you are, then use this article:

Other Time Machine restore options are here:

Note, if recovering from a PowerPC Mac (iMac G5, PowerMac, Mac Mini G4, iBook, Powerbook), this tip is important:

Otherwise use the recommended restore option with whatever backup software you used initially.

  • Turn screen off?

why is there not an option under turn screen off to not automatically turn off? Shouldn't I have the option on my Touchpad for the screen to not turn itself off?
I use splashtop often to access my desktop so I can watch Netflix and I hate that after 10 minutes of watching the screen shuts off (unless I remember to touch it before the 10 minutes is up).
Should really be up to the Touchpad owner not HP.
Post relates to: HP TouchPad (WiFi)

There is but I have been reading about a lot of people having troubles with their TouchPad if they have preware on it and install HPs Updates when they are available. So I decided to not go the Preware route. I was just hoping that HP would do something about it, but alas I think such a thing will not occur.
