How to turn your imac into just a external monitor

Hi I was told I could use my IMAC 27" late 2009 as a external monitor for my Mac Book Pro I just got.  I bought a thunderbolt cable but it doesnt work.  Is there a command I need to use on the imac to act as a external monitor ?

Hi, not sure a TB cable works or not...
To use an iMac (27-inch, Mid 2010) or iMac (27-inch, Late 2009) in Target Display mode with another computer as the source:
Make sure both computers are turned on and awake.
Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort cable to the Mini DisplayPort on each computer. The 27-inch iMac will enter Target Display mode and display content from the source computer.
Note: If you are connecting two 27-inch iMacs, connect a Mini DisplayPort cable to each computer and press Command + F2 on the 27-inch iMac keyboard that you will use as an external display.
To leave Target Display mode, press Command + F2 on the keyboard of the 27-inch iMac that is in Target Display mode. To return to Target Display mode, press Command + F2 again.

  • How to turn off display while connected to external monitor??

I'm running my macbook into an external monitor, using wireless mouse and keyboard. I want to get full power from my graphics card so would like to know how to turn the macbook screen off while connected to the larger monitor. I have read that simply closing the lid and then waking it with the mouse will work, however wont this activate the screen as well while the lids closed? Any advice would be great!
    Thanks
    Phil

    Hi Philip
    here is the link:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300562
And it won't turn the built screen on since macbook has sensor to prevent it turn on while it closed.
    Good Luck.

  • How to Turn Your Mac into a FireWire Hard Drive

    I followed these instructions:
    http://www.ehow.com/how2160597hard-drive-quick-data-transfer.html
and it worked great, I was able to use my macbook as a hard drive and quickly copies files to it. But I'm concerned that anyone with a firewire cable and a mac can easily get at my files, and that having to log into my laptop is useless. Does anyone now a way to password protect/restrict access to my macbook via a firewire?
    Thanks!

Thanks. To enable Open Firmware Password I found this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1352
But enabling it blocks many other important start up troubleshooting task, such as starting up from a Diagnostic disc. It would be in the interest of security if I could password protect Target Disk Mode, because anyone can quickly get my files with just a firewire cable, but still allow the other start up task. So now I must decide between security and the ability to trouble shoot my computer if it doesn't start. I don't like having to choose between the two.

  • Can you use your iMac 27" as an external Monitor for a PC?

After doing a bunch of research I figured it's not possible to do on models later then 2010, BUT I came across a few motherboards (Asus Z87-DELUXE)
that have thunderbolt capability and obviously before I go out and spend $400 I'd like to know if it's 100% possible.
So, would it be possible to run a thunderbolt cable from a PC to an iMac to use it as a standalone monitor or would the iMac completely reject it purely based on the fact it's not a apple product?
Or could you just use the "Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter" to get it to work?

Even though the PC motherboard might have Thunderbolt capability you need to research further to see if the Thunderbolt port on the board supports video out and is certified to work in Target Display Mode. To date I have not seen any that meet this criteria, another PC shortcoming. Also you may benefit by reading Apple's FAQ on Target Display Mode, at least book mark it.

  • I made a picture collage in pages from the pictures in iPhoto.  You used to be able to print and then say save as a jpeg to iPhoto and that option is gone.  How do you turn your document into a jpeg now.

If you chose print, you can save as PDF. If you open the saved PDF in preview, you can save as JPEG, GIF, PNG. FYI you can crop in preview.
Another option is you could use command + shift + 4 to do a screen shot of a specific part of of the screen.

  • Upgrading to a Macbook Pro and Turning my iMac into a Hardrive

My old PowerPC iMac G5 is running Final Cut Pro really slow. Rendering about 10 seconds of clip take like 40 to 60 seconds to render. I dont think that is normal because my dad's Powerbook Pro or what the old MacBook Pro, renders faster when my iMac is only a year old while his is 3 years old I think.
Anyways, would it be wise to move to a Macbook Pro 17" because I want a mobile workstation I can take with me to school and such not. I am planning on turning my iMac into a hard drive with my LaCie.
My last question. If I turn my iMac into a external hardrive can I hook up my LaCie into my iMac and then acess it from the MacBook Pro? or will I have to hook the LaCie directly into the MacBook Pro?

    Er, wow.
Something is running, that's for sure. Limewire is a type of bittorrent, yes, and would be pulling network activity like that. Try quitting both, so only Activity Monitor is running.
To be honest, its outside the scope of a video editing board to help you trouble shoot your computer (sorry if that seems like a brush-off), but Activity monitor should tell you what you need to know. I'll answer a few more posts though.
Show the Activity Monitor Window, and in the top drop down option, select 'All Processes' and tell me what the top hit is, when sorted by % CPU column, for me, it's Activity Monitor itself, averaging about 5%-10% of my much slower computer than yours. Typical Idle %'s are 85%-99% when not doing anything other than looking at the Activity Monitor.
Talk to who else uses or set up the computer - perhaps they have some background tasks running.
Another alternative is to create a new user, log out of this one, use the new user log in just to edit video, don't do anything else with that user account. Be aware, you can't use the other users files from the new user though.

What peripherals do you need to turn your iPhone into a conference room speakerphone system?
If you buy a separate conference mic and a speaker, can they somehow work together off the iPhone headphone jack like a huge set of group earphones?  What if you want to connect 2 mics and a speaker?
Do you have to be very careful that they can all be attached somehow at the same time?
Are there reasonably priced conference room speakerphone peripherals the work well together that you would recommend?

Why don't you contact Apple and find out?  Certainly if you can find your way around the internet to have been able to find this forum, you can certainly find the number for AppleCare.

  • How do I use my late 2011 iMac ( with thunderbolt) as external monitor for laptop/Xbox or other device with hdmi as output.

May be this question has been asked thousand times. how do I use my mid 2011 iMac ( with thunderbolt) as external monitor for laptop/Xbox or other device with hdmi as output. if apple hasn't removed that feature and has just moved that functinoality to thunderbolt then how can I use it. currently there is no laptop available with thunderbolt output. no 3rd party converter available. whats the use of having feature on latest functionality if we cant use it. I wish they would have made one port has mini-dvi and other thunderbolt for backward compatibility untill some vendor comes up with converter.

    It Says :
Mac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011) and iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) and later computers support Target Display Mode via Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable (2 m) when the source is another Thunderbolt-equipped computer.
Name one computer model/vendor which has thunderbolt as output for display + audio. this is so stupid to move to new technology without availbility of its compatible devices.

  • IMAC 27 inch as external monitor for PC issue

I'm not able to use the iMAC 27 inch as external monitor with my PC which has ATI 5870 graphic card. I use DP (displayport)-> miniDP cable. Any help?
    Thank you.
    M

It appears that none of the ATI HD 5XXX series cards are compatible with the iMac unless they have a mini displayport connector (ie eyefinity models and the $700 HD 5970). The ATI HD 4xxx models with the full size display port do seem to work also. I am curious as to whether this incompatibility carried over into the new iMac models....

  • How to turn two users into one?

    Hey there!
As I selled my MBP last month I copied all its datas to my iMac via migration assistant and created a new user for it. So I have now two accounts with different photos, documents etc.
My problem now is how to turn these two users into one?
I want all my photos appear in Aperture of my first user, I want all my documents appear in "Documents" of the first user and so on..
Is it able? If yes, how could I realize it?
    Thanks for your support!
    René
PS: 2 Users on iMac -> 1 User on iMac.

Thanks for your help at first.
But you usually can't "merge" two "normal" user accounts successfully.  If both accounts have data for the same application, it will be very difficult or impossible to merge them by copying files & folders.
I cannot merge them.. So there is the question how to copy all medias from Aperture to my other Aperture medias?
Can I export my whole medias and import in at the other users Aperture? And how? #
Edit: I dont want to have two different libraries at all.. I want them to be together in just one..

  • How to turn a silhouette into an outline?

I need to create a line drawing of the outline of a chair. I tried following the various Illustrator tutorials to take the image of a chair and create a silhouette. However, I can't figure out how to take this silhouette and get just the outline of it. The Illustrator Image Trace tool doesn't seem to have an option to just save the outline.
Is there an easy way in Illustrator or Photoshop to turn this silhouette into an outline image that I can save as a file? I will print the outline in a very light opacity so that the lines are barely visible for hand rendering. I don't want to use the pen tool to outline the silhouette because my hand is too shaky to do a good job.
    THank you for any advice...

Thank you Monika and Steve for suggesting to ungroup and then use the direct selection to edit it, and to change the fill to zero and the stroke to a very thin line.
It turned out that the outline was very wavy/crooked, since image trace outlined the pixels somewhat haphazardly. So the final solution was complicated because I had to learn how to use direct select and edit anchor points to straighten out the lines.
I guess it would have been easier to use a light box and just trace the image by hand. oh well. I learned alot about Illustrator.
Thank you again for your helpfulness!

  • How to Turn USB Camcorder Into WebCam

I have a Sony HandyCam DCR-SR68 and I would like to use it as a WebCam for my Computer.  Is there any cheap (free?)way to do this?  I have the USB cable, but I would not like to get a video card to convert it to digital.  I would like to know if there are any drivers or software I can use so I just plug my camera into my comuter and it can be used as a webcam.  Thanks!

With an Intel based Mac, you can boot from either FW or USB. Clone your internal drive to an external one using either SuperDuper, Carbon Copy Cloner, or
    SilverKeeper.
I use SuperDuper since it was the only one that was Tiger compatible from Day One. The other two took several weeks to be updated and I couldn't be without a backup utility that long.
