You cannot do anything but restore it which will wipe the device. If you have been syncing with iTunes, then you're library is on your computer and may be restored.

Your friend may have placed the ipod next to an object that repeatedly pressed the screen. If you do not know the combination, you can try and connect it to the iTunes library you normally sync it. Upon properly ejecting it from iTunes and your PC, you may find that it is now unlocked. If it is, disable the screen lock or change the combination immediately.
