How to unlock desktop icons?

I recently locked my desktop icons and now can't remember who to unlocak them.

Yes I can. But when I do, Get Info shows that all users can read and write to that file and the locked button is unchecked but greyed out so I cannot check it. This is true for each file on the desktop.

  • How to create desktop icon that is a live URL

I am sure I'm overlooking something obvious and that this is a stupid question, but I can't figure out how to do something in OS X SL that is a snap in Windows: How do you create a desktop icon that is a "shortcut" to a web site URL, so that double-clicking the desktop icon causes the default browser to open to that page? All I can figure out is how to save a page to the desktop as an html file through the file menu. But that creates both the icon and a whole folder of other files and appears to just open a static (historical) document. Basically I am just wanting to make a "bookmark" to a single site right on my desktop. (It's my Delicious site where I keep all my bookmarks for all browsers on all devices.)

The easiest way is to just drag the URL from Safari's address bar to your desktop. This will create a .webloc file that points to the URL. Double-clicking the .webloc will launch the browser to navigate to the stored URL.

  • How to change desktop icons?

    Hi guys,
Just wondering if someone can help me out here? Am trying to change the desktop 'icons' in my 20" imac? (I want to change the icon of the HDD and some folders) Can someone help me out? Cheers

If you already have a picture that you want to use as an icon, open it in a picture viewing app (Preview, for instance), and copy it. Now click on the icon of the folder or disk that you want to change and press Command-I (or choose "Get Info" from the Finder's File menu). Click on the icon in the top left-hand corner: you can now paste the picture onto it.

  • How to shrink desktop icons?

I accidentally moved my mouse too fast, possibly whilst pressing another button I'm not too sure and now all the icons on my destop are enlarged and I cant shrink them back to the original size.
    Can anybody help?

    Hi buddy,
I dont know what operating system you have but on Windows 7 you can change the icon size if you right click on desktop > view. There you can select between small, medium and large icons.
For example I have set small icons because its enough in my opinion. :)

  • All desktop icons are itunes icons how to change them

how to change desktop icons back to original, as all are iTunes icons now

First I'd set up a System Restore point. Then try applying the LNK registry fix from the following document:
File Association Fixes for Windows 7
Does that get your icons back to normal?

  • How can I avoid losing my customised desktop icon arrangement?

I have a lot of folder icons on my desktop arranged in a specific way. Recently when I shut down and then re-boot I find all the desktop icons  have been re-arranged. This is a real pain! How can I prevent this from happeining?
I've been using Mac computers for many years and have never had this problem.

    Did I miss something?
Looks like it! Let me repeat what I wrote:
"The issue in that case concerned the dock, and a corrupt preference. The solution was to delete the 'com.apple.dock.plist' from the Preferences folder in the Library, then log out/in."
"Given the issue in my case concerns the desktop, (NOT THE DOCK!) should I do the same with the 'com.apple.desktop.plist' in the Preferences folder?" In other words, do you think deleting the 'com.apple.desktop.plist' might fix the desktop issue?
Your reply - "Haven't a clue. Why deleting the Dock plist file fixed the Desktop issue worked is beyond my ken" - suggests you didn't understand the question, right?

  • How can I remove icons from the Finder sidebar?  Were transferred when I set up laptop from my desktop computer.  Tried dragging off but that didn't work.

How can I remove icons from the Finder sidebar?  Transferred info from my Mac Pro desktop computer (using target mode) and there were folder icons on the Mac Pro Finder sidebar that are now on the MacBook Finder sidebar, even though these folders do not exist on the MacBook.  Tried to drag them off, which is the usual way to get rid of folders that the user adds to the sidebar (as opposed to those that can be added via the Customize Toolbar dropdown menu) but was unsuccessful.  I then unchecked all of the Customize Toolbar menu items and the folder icons still remained.  What else can I do?

Did you hold the Command (Apple) key while dragging them off the sidebar? That usually makes them go *poof*.

  • How do I make the clickpad cause the size of my desktop icons to change?

As I work through the day, something I do to the clickpad seems to cause my desktop icons to suddenly grow larger, or shrink smaller.  I have noticed that the icon change happens as I sweep my regular clickpad finger across the clickpad.  I'm not sure what I'm doing with the other hand at the same time, but I seem to be touching the clickpad's left button area at least part of the time.  The sudden increase in size of icons causes them to rearrange themselves into an unfamiliar pattern, i.e. a mess.  So I then must take time to rearrange about 40 icons, thereby becoming vastly less efficient with a computer than I would be if using pencil and paper.  I am not able to reproduce this action at will; it only happens while I'm working normally well, concentrating on other things.
If any of you know exactly how this occurs, and what the feature is called, please tell me the name and, much more importantly, please tell me how I can stop this from occurring.  I've searched HP's instructions for the clickpad, searched for a newer driver, and searched the forums to no avail.  The notebook computer is a Pavilion DV7-4280us (a quick-ship model).  The offending clickpad is, apparently, being beta tested on unsuspecting consumers who, choose to believe the HP tech support and sales folks instead of the numerous previous consumers who have complained about these clickpads in customer reviews.  Overall, this computer really is terrific; but I sure could use some help to prevent these undesirable scramblings of my desktop icons that suddenly outgrow the space allocated to them.  Thanks in advance for your help.

Firefox now always stores the old session which you can access by going to the History menu and selecting "Restore Previous Session".
If you always open the last set of tabs, an alternative approach is this:
    # In the Firefox menu select Preferences to open the Preferences window
    # Go to the General panel
    # Change the setting "When Firefox starts" to "Show my windows and tabs from last time"
If you have it set to the above but it is not remembering the tabs, the file that stores details of sessions may be corrupt.
    # Open your profile folder, for details of how to find it see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Profiles
    # Close Firefox
    # In the profile folder delete sessionstore.js
That file will be recreated when you next start Firefox

  • I recently thought I was updating my Safari browser. When completed, I put all those little files that were on the desktop into the trash. Now my trash is saying it can't be emptied because there are locked files and I don't know how to unlock them

I recently thought I was updating my Safari browser. When completed, I put all those little files that were on the desktop into the trash. Now my trash is saying it can't be emptied because there are locked files and I don't know how to unlock them or get them out of my trash and they keep multiplying. And to make matters worse, I tried renaming them as pdf files thinking that might do the trick.

oh boy ! I'd ask you if you knew what kind of files they were or where they came from, but I don't think you could help me a bunch. Try going to the Utilities folder and running Disk Utilities.  If you want to empty the Trash and it won't empty, go to the finder and choose "secure Empty trash". Worse case scenario-you may have to reinstall Snow Leopard, but I don't know what else to suggest. If you have a DVD of Snow Leopard, boot up from that,  and reinstall the OS. This will not touch the stuff you have on your Hard Drive, then you can update from 10.6 to 10.6.8, otherwise Onyx? Maybe those files are part of the OS which needs them to keep running.  if you hold down the Shift key on reboot, you can reboot in Safe mode and maybe you can take the files out of the trash that way
    good luck

  • How to create shortcut desktop icon for all users???

    Hi,
I am just wondering, what is the technically correct location to place say, a shortcut, for all users to access on their desktops on a given machine?
    Is it C:\Users\Public\Desktop ?
    Or is it C:\Users\All Users\Desktop ?
Would it also be possible to explain the differences as well? Or paste some links to the overview of each one? I am having trouble finding anything from MS.
    Thank you.

In that case, there may be a problem with your Finder preferences or window settings.
Try removing these files, then restarting:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    ~/Desktop/.DS_Store
Let me know if you're not sure how to do that.

  • How do I take bold off of the desktop icon font on my MacBook Pro?

I thought I did it in the past, but I can't figure it out now.  I am looking at the desktop icons on my MacBook Pro, and the font is bothering my eyes.  I am trying to take the bold off, but I cannot figure out how to do it.  I saw where to change the font size and the grid options, but not specifically the bold.  Any ideas?

    Hi CoachSimpson31,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
It sounds like what you may be looking for is the customization window for desktop files and folders. There is no option for bold text, but there is an option to adjust the text size that may be helpful to you.
    Mac Basics: Desktop
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3737
    Customize your desktop
You can change the size of icons, arrange them in a grid, and set other preferences for items on your desktop by changing the view options on your desktop. To change your desktop view options, click the desktop, and then choose View > Show View Options from menu bar. You can try the different settings to see which ones you like—you will immediately see the effects of your changes.
    Have a great day,
    Joe

  • How do i get desktop icons out of the hide mode???

my baby got on my computer and started pressing the keyboard and now my icons are hidden. i have only had my computer for 6 days so i have no idea how to get the icons from the hide mode. when i put the cursor down to the bottom of the desktop the icons pop back up but as soon as i move the cursor up they disappear. please tell me how to get them back to how they were thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Somehow your baby has activated the hidden Dock preference. Go to the Apple menu and choose System Preferences... In Sys Prefs choose the Dock pane. There is a check box to automatically hide or show the Dock.
