How to unlock iPhone 4s bought from 3rd party Carphone Warehouse UK

Hi everyone!
Hope you can help?
I purchased an iPhone 4s from Carphone Warehouse UK with an Orange contract. I am traveling to the USA shortly and I would like to use a local SIM card whilst out there as it will dramatically reduce my cost for data etc.
I contacted Orange to unlock my phone. They initially said that they could do it, but when they pulled my details up they said that because I purchased my iPhone through a 3rd party (Carphone Warehouse) and that the handset was not 'Orange branded' that they were unable to do it! I will need to contact Apple to unlock it.
I rang Apple and they said categorically that they do not unlock phones and it is the responsibility of the network to unlock the handset.
I rang Orange back with Apples response. They still said that they could not do it. I tried to reason with them, explaining that I wanted to get unlocked from THEIR network. But apparently its the phone that gets unlocked and not the network?
I decided to go back to my point of purchase. Carphone Warehouse said that they don't unlock phones and that it was a very 'grey' area. They said, that what ever SIM card is initially inserted into the handset, it automatically locks to that network? They didn't like to confirm who is responsible to unlock the phone (Orange or Apple) but they were leaning more toward Apple.
So my questions are:
Has anybody else had the same problem?
Has anybody else resolved this issue?
If this is not possible, can anybody offer any alternatives, other than roaming bundles etc, as they are still expensive?
Thank you all very much for reading this, I hope to hear from you soon,
Ceri

ONLY Orange can unlock your iphone.  No one else at all.  ONLY Orange.
Locking and unlocking is at the sole discretion of the carrier.
You will need to keep taking to Orange.

Only on a supported GSM carrier.
Will there be networks I cant use?
    Yes. CDMA networks.
As I understand it the 4S supports GSM and CDMA networks worldwide.
No, you've misunderstood. The GSM iPhone you can buy in Ireland supports GSM networks only i.e. AT&T

  • Unlocking iPhone 5 bought from Telefonica Movistar in Spain

I have an iPhone 5 bought from Telefonica Movistar in Spain over 2 years ago. I paid full RRP for this phone. I asked Movistar if it can be unlocked. They said they don't do it but for me to contact Apple directly to unlock. How do I get this done?

According to this article your carrier offers unlocking:
    Wireless carrier support and features
The unlocking process has to be started by the carrier, Apple can do nothing about it if they don't want to unlock the device for some reasons:

  • Anyone know how to upload the HTS files from 3rd party provider to GTS??

We are having following files provided by 3rd party provider - CUSTOMS Info
    NAFTA ROO
    U.S. HTS
Per provider, SAP has developed a system so that GTS users can automatically reclassify items that are effected by a change and they have asked us to program the HS data needed.
Anyone know how to do that?
    Please advise,
    Appreciated.

    Hi Reddy,
Thanks for your input firstly, and i still need ur advise on the HTS upload.
    1. Below is the HTS files provided by 3rd party company. and I noticed that there is 3 types of files. "DTR" , "Nom" and "Txt". Could you explain what are they? and If I need to upload them seperately?
    2. Follow the procedure your provided - "classification > upload manually HTS codes into GTS system"  Actually, I didn't find upload mannually HTS codes into GTS  IN THE SAP CUSTOM Managment.
I tried "Load Traiff Code Numbers from XML files" and "Load Commodity code from XML file".
    1) "Load Traiff Code Numbers from XML files"
    2) "Load Commodity code from XML file".
       a)  Select all files.
            - fill in "Data Provider",
            - "XML Files"-All files selected.
            - check " Output list", "simulation mode" "Nomenclature Active" and "Activate All Text Types"
            - no "Alternative Numbering Scheme" selected, and other selected.
            Error msg found:
            - Unable to find any defined structures for tariff assignment rule set "_DHSCN"
            - Incorrect order. Enter the first file(see long text)
        b)   only select "HSCN_Txt_I_00002001001.xml", the other is the same like bove.
              1. prompted to select a "From-Time Zone",   Select "UTC+8"
              2. Simulation was carried out successfully
        c)  only select "HSCN_Nom_I_00002001002.xml", the other is the same like above.
But I meet error for this file:  "Incorrect order. Enter the first file(see long text)"
        d)  only select "HSCN_DTR_I_00002001007.xml", the other is the same like above.

  • Can an Unlocked Iphone 4S bought from apple in Ireland work on any network in the USA?

So im moving to the united states in a months time and im considering buying an unlocked Iphone 4S from Apple here in Ireland. Can I still use the phone in Boston when I move there? Will there be networks I cant use? As I understand it the 4S supports GSM and CDMA networks worldwide. However on other websites I have read that If I buy it here then it will only work on AT&T over there. Is this true and if so,, Why?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Ryan.

  • Will an unlocked iPhone 6 bought from the Apple website work in India on Indian carriers?

    Hey,
I'm thinking of buying an unlocked iPhone 6 from the Apple website. On the website it states that it will work on any of the carriers in the United States. Since it does not mention the possibility of its use in India, I wanted to confirm if it would be usable on an Indian Carrier with all the services enabled.

It will work provided you are on a supported iPhone carrier. In order to purchase it, you must have a billing and shipping address in the US.
You may not get 4G/LTE service outside the US.
You will not get any warranty or post-warranty support for the phone. You must return to the US or send the phone to a friend/relative in the US and have them bring it in.

  • Can I use my unlock iPhone 4S (bought from UK) in Hong Kong?

I've heard about the GSM and CDMA carriers but not sure what they are?? So can the unlocked iPhone 4S be used internationally? I'll be travelling to Hong Kong and will get the micro SIM there.

Not for iPhone. The problem with warranty/support in India is that such is handled by the official carriers, not Apple, and they absolutely will not touch any iPhone not purchased from them.

I am aware of the iOS 6 features that cannot be used in India. Other than that, any network issues, antena problem (like the iphone 4s) etc?

  • Unlocked iPhone 6 (bought from overseas) in Verizon

    Hello
I bought an iPhone 6 from South Korea few weeks ago (Model: A1586).
Now I'm back in the States, willing to use it in Verizon.
I already have a 2 year contract with Verizon and it ends at April, so if I want to use my new iPhone, it has to be through Verizon.
Cause if I try to use my iPhone through other carriers and to close my account in Verizon (since I cannot afford to pay for two lines), there will be a penalty of $150.
It seems like A1586 both works with GSM and CDMA format. And the type of LTE bands which Verizon uses, are included in the bands that A1586 supports. Also, my iPhone is unlocked. Which means, logically my iPhone should work with Verizon.
But, since my iPhone was not bought through Verizon there were some difficulties in activating. If I type in the IMEI in Verizon's website to activate, my iPhone's IMEI was not added to Verizon's database so they could not search for the device. And a message that this device is not compatible with the Verizon wireless network popped up.
Then I called the Verizon customer center and tried to translocate my information from my previous SIM card to my new iPhone's micro SIM and plugged it into my iPhone, but my iPhone just couldn't catch Verizon's signals (No service). Though I believe it should be logically possible. I restored all the information in iPhone and it still does not work.
What should I do to use my iPhone in Verizon?

It is unlikely you will be able to use this phone on Verizon.
Your best bet would be to sell your phone on a site such as swappa.com and use the proceeds to purchase a phone compatible with the Verizon network. One thing swappa.com also does is allows people to swap phones if you can find someone willing to do so. You may be able to get an even trade. Just make sure you get one which is meant for Verizon.
Your phone's ID will have to be in Verizon's database for it to be allowed on their network. A phone originally meant for a foreign network will not be in their database AND Verizon will not add it in order to be able to activate on their network.

Unless you are a current/former customer, using/used that phone on a network in the UK, you can forget about getting it officially unlocked, as none of the UK carriers will authorize unlocking unless you are a current/former customer.
