How to unmount a disk that thinks it's in use?

Disk Utility will not Erase a backup hard drive disk b/c "Couldn't Unmount Disk." I've been trying to Erase a backup hard drive b/c it mistakenly thinks it's full, and in another discussion I was told to run Erase in Disk Utility.  No space on backup hard drive?
However, each time I try to eject disk, which is what I assume unmount means, I get error message, "The volume can’t be ejected because it’s currently in use." I get this whether I try to eject in Finder or Disk Utility. However, the disk is not in use. It has only a few files, none of which are open. No aps.
Is this a way to force an unmount, similar to a forced quit?
I have a guess as what iMac might think in still "in use: the few files on the backup disk now have alias listed in burn folder. I had earlier thought I'd save those files by burning to a CD disk. Turned out my CD disk wasn't big enough. So, I rejected the idea. Ejected disk, but burn folder remained, and no matter how I try, I can't delete or trash it. I can't remove the 5 folders on it, individually or all together. The burn folder is one of the most stubborn things I've ever come across. Could this be why I can't unmount disk and thus can't erase the disk?
Any other way to unmount or to Erase the disk?
Thanks

Hint:
when you delete files on an external disk, they will stay in the local .trash bin on that disk, and not free up the space on the disk. You have to empty the trash bin on your mac (with the external disk still connected) to free up this hidden trash bin on the external disk.

How does the backup file that I would like to use for restore now require a password, when I just Backed it up on 10/30/14

It requires a password to restore from it because at some point, you checked the box in iTunes to use encrypted backups, at which point you were prompted for, and set a password.
If you now can't remember what that was, then you can not restore from that backup.

  • How do i change so that the HDD currently being used for Time machine becomes the startup disk?

    Hi there,
I bought this mac with 2 HDD's (a 250gb and a 2tb). When I booted up the mac for the first time, I accidently chose the 2tb HDD as the time machine.......thing so this makes the 250gb HDD the startup drive. This is useless for me as I only want the documents to be backed up so I want the 250gb drive to be the time machine and the 2tb to be the startup drive.
I've tried opening the Mac OS X installer and it doesn't allow me to set the start up drive to the 2tb drive as it isbeing used for the time machine and i've already turned it off within the system preferences.
Please tell me it's possible to switch them around other-wise this will just be a wasted purchase completely. I already accept the fact that I may have to wipe the drive and re-install everything as well as the documents etc but as long as I get some sort of solution that will allow me to do this.
Can someone please help me with this!
    Regards
    Eric Wade

Copy off everything you want, restart from the iMac's original disk, choose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu, wipe drives as desired, and then install the OS.

My sons ipad is in disabled mode and his mom doesn't have access to iTunes. Can anyone tell me how I can get it working again?

Take it to an Apple Store for assistance. However, the iPad will be returned to its out of the box configuration (erased). You may be asked to provide proof that the iPad is yours.

  • How to model groups/members that are many to many using logical dimension?

This is the RPD support for cascading prompts in BI Answers. In our data model, we have agentgroups and agents, connected by an agentgroupbridge. Since agents can be in more than one group, the relationship is many:many. We'd like to be able to include both agentgroups and agents as input prompts. When a user selects one or more of the agentgroups in a drop-down selection list, only the agents in the agentgroup(s) selected appear in the agents' drop-down selection list.
agentgroup[full list of agentgroups] => make agentgroup selection => agents[only those agents in selected groups]
We plan to combine agentgroups and the bridge into a view, so that there would only be one step from the group to the members.
Can this be done in an OBI RPD? Is it implementable via logical dimension with hierarchy? If so, parent-child or level-based?
    Thanks!

    Hi thr,
Need to replicate it back in local to check how we can do contraint here with multiple selection of agentgroups in prompts. For sure only a hierarchy in RPD would be able to do this....
Incase you just want to try with one value selected in agentgroups then you can go for presentation variable.
    Prompt1
    - agentgroups column which set presntation variable 'pv_agtgrp'
    Prompt2
    - Show SQL for agentscolumn.bridgetable (pull bridgetable in presentation layer here) and the SQL would be
SELECT agentscolumn.bridgetable from bridgetable.SubjectArea where agentgroups.bridgetable = '@{pv_agtgrp}'. This would also populate a new presentation variable say 'pv_agts'
pv_agts would be used to filter the reports.
Hope this is useful to startwith...

  • Hi, I tried to erase my computer and when I turned it back on it went to internet recovery. How do I get past that step so I can use my computer again?

I really need this. I am still in school and I have papers due, please anything will help!

It's not clear what you tried to do or why, but if you intended to wipe everything clean, run the OS X Installer in Internet Recovery. When it's done, the machine will be in the same state as when you took it out of the box, except that the bundled iLife applications will be gone. All your data will be gone too. If that's not what you want, DO NOT follow these instructions.

  • Can't unmount an internal disk that I installed in my tower

Years ago, I added a supplemental internal hard drive (Maxtor) to increase my storage capacity. It continues to work fine. But...
I'd like to be able to do maintenance on it (verify the directory, make any repairs, etc.), and for that, I need to be able to unmount this disk.
Note: there is no eject icon next to the disk's name in my Finder window.
I always get the error message that the volume could not be unmounted, and I've tried to unmount it several ways:
    - Used Terminal to try to unmount
    - Used Disk Utility to try to verify &/or repair
    - Started up with a bootable clone and tried
    - Started up with a bootable Disk Warrior CD and tried
    - Tried to reformat/erase the disk (couldn't)
I have backed up to this drive, using "erase & copy files" (from a sparse image backup), and that worked, so apparently it didn't need to unmount the disk to do that. But I can't copy my computer over to my laptop (in Target Disk Mode), apparently due to this problem. Sigh.
Disk Utility tells me to be sure all folders, files, etc. are not in use on this disk, and then maybe it will unmount. But I see nothing in use or open.
NOTE: I have Sys 9 installed on that volume. For a while, I thought maybe OS X somehow keeps a file open that's related to OS 9 (like maybe sort of having it "stand by" in case Classic needs to load when I try to open an old file or something). But that doesn't seem to be the case after all, since I've booted from a bootable clone on a different, external drive (meaning my normal boot drive is not loaded), and the problem persists. But wait, maybe the clone I've booted from is somehow activating the OS 9 disk in that way, still. But wait, that can't be it, since I've booted from Disk Warrior CD and the problem persists.
Shouldn't I be able to do maintenance on that additionally installed internal disk? And doesn't it have to unmount for that? But how can I get it to unmount? If there is a directory problem causing this, how can I repair the directory to resolve the unmounting problem, if it won't unmunt to accept the repairs? And why isn't there a way to just erase the disk and start over? I guess it has to be unmounted first, fir ANYthing. But HOW??
    Many thanks.

    Hi, Larry.
You wrote: "I always get the error message that the volume could not be unmounted"This implies that you have either:
    a. A file open that is saved on that disk.
    b. An application or background process running that was either launched from that disk or is using a file on that disk.
    c. A Startup Item or Login Item is either being launched from that disk or using a file on that disk, akin to points (a) and (b). See my "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ.
Try restarting in Safe Mode and after logging in, launch Disk Utility.
    Good luck!

  • Imac will not see my hard drive on start up, wants to start from network start up disk that does not exist. How to get rid of it? So there is just one choice / my hard drive.

I have a Intel duo Imac. Everything has been running relatively smoothly for a few years now. All of a sudden my computer will not start. I get the flashing folder with a question mark.
When I go to Start up disk in my system perfernces while the computer is on. I see 2 possible choices. One is my hard drive with the operating system shown. The other is a non-existant Network Start up disk with a question mark in it ( looks like a hard drive with a question mark and it say's its a "network start up disk).
All I think I want to do is get rid of the Network startup with the question mark. I can not find anywhere how one can just remove an old or non existant start up disk without reformatting.
I believe this came from a clients hard drive who had a network system on it. We no longer have that drive. It no longer exists. But a latent icon shows up in start up disk.
When I go to change the start up disk. I can change it to either the hard drive or the network with the question mark. But when I select my hard drive and then got to restart the computer. I get the flashing folder with a question mark on start up. I have also seen the flashing globe a couple times.
When I attempt to run disk utility from may install disk ( holding down "C" on start-up ). Disk utility does not see my hard drive. Just the Apple install disk with the disk utility on it.
What can I do to remedy this short of re-installing? Will a program like Disk Warrior or Tech Tool help?

Thank you. That's what I thought will need to happen.
One more question. I tried using the Apple install disk that came with the computer. It's an OS 10.5.6 disk. It does not see my 10.6.8 system internal hard drive to repair. All it see's is itself 10.5.6 disk. Do you think I can use a 10.8+ disk utillity since that is a higher system it will see the 10.6.8. Where the 10.5.6 does not?
I don't want to turn the computer off for fear I'll get the question mark again. P-Ram got me going last time but for how long I don't know?  It would be nice to be able to turn the computer off for the night and startup as usual to give it a rest and try to reset itself.
Thanks for your help, I know I will eventually need to re-install. But I am in the middle of a project with tight deadlines and all I can do right now is back-up. Trying to migrate to another computer temporarily to finish the job. That's a lot of extra work in the short time also.
Just trying to put a band-aid on it for another couple weeks.

  • How do I repair a disk that's OK?

I'm trying to do a remote install, and it fails, telling me that the Macintosh HD needs to be repaired. But when I verify the HD, Disk Utility tells me that the disk is OK. How do I repair a disk that's OK?
Here's the context. I want to install Lion on a MacBook Pro (“MBP”) that’s currently running Leopard. Apple says to install Snow Leopard and then get Lion from the App Store. So I bought a Snow Leopard install disk and thereby discovered that my MBP’s SuperDrive is no longer working. Had I known, I could instead have bought Lion on a flash drive, but I’ve already paid for the install disk. I’ve also got an eMac running Leopard, but I don’t have a FireWire 6-pin to 6-pin cable, so can’t use target disk mode. So I’m trying a remote install.
To remote install, I put the DVD into the eMac and turn on DVD Sharing. Back on the MBP, I use Terminal to enable ODS:
$ defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser EnableODiskBrowsing -bool true
$ defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser ODSSupported -bool true
and reboot, and now I get a Remote Disc in the MBP’s Finder Sidebar Devices. I select the Remote Disc and the eMac shows up in the Finder window. I double click the eMac icon, and the remote Mac OS X Install DVD opens in the Finder window. I double click the installer and it starts running, so I’ve succeeded in starting a remote install. The problem is that the installer quickly fails with this message:
The disk “Macintosh HD” needs to be repaired.
Go to the computer with the Mac OS X Install DVD, open Remote Install Mac OS X (located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder) and follow the onscreen instructions for restarting your computer using the DVD.
When the Mac OS X Installer opens, follow the onscreen instructions to install Mac OS X. During installation, the Installer repairs the disk automatically.
I think what it’s suggesting is that I boot my MBP from the remote disk. (Right?) I think that won’t work for me because I’ve got a MacBook Pro rather than a MacBook Air or Mac Mini, which are the only types that can boot from a remote disk. (Right?) Instead I thought I’d do whatever repair is necessary to the MBP’s Macintosh HD and then try the remote install again. So I ran Disk Utility on the MBP to verify the Macintosh HD, but it succeeds with “The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK.”
I can’t remote install until the disk is repaired. But how can I repair a non-existent problem?

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
      1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
      2. Restart the computer.
      3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
      4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple
          logo appears.
      5. Wait for installer to finish loading.

  • How can I create a new folder in an external disk that is connected via USB to my Mac?

How can I create a new folder in an external disk that is connected via USB to my Mac?

Just like you would create a new folder anywhere. Open the drive's icon from your desktop or the Finder, and click shift-command-N. (Or use the Finder menu if you prefer - File - New Folder).
If you can't create a folder, your drive may be the wrong format (you can't write to a Windows/NTFS formatted drive, for example). You'll have to back up any files you have on there, and then use Disk Utility to reformat it to Mac Extended (if it will only be used on a Mac) or MS-DOS format (if you want to share it with a PC).

I have a Windows 7 Pro OEM disk that can install either the 32 bit or 64 bit versions.  When trying to setup a dual boot for my Mac Mini using Bootcamp version 5.0.3, I get the message that I have the 32 bit version of Windows.  Any ideas on how I can get it to recognize the 64 bit version so that I can partition my "Mini"?

If by "OEM" you mean the disk came with another Win computer, it won't work. You need either a full retail verison or the "System Builders' Edition." I used the latter for my BC installation and it worked flawlessly and was marked as 64-bit--no mention of 32-bit.

You'll need to provide some more information .... what current mac mini do you have? Click on the apple in the left corner of the menu bar, click about this mac, and what does it say for processor, memory, and os x version?
When you say you have no DVD, do you have the mac mini server or is the DVD broken?
You can't do anything with 10.6 Snow Leopard on a PowerPC mini, however, if it is an Intel-based mini, you could probably hook up the systems in target disk mode to install 10.6.
