How to unmount external drives using xfce eject widget

I am using devmon, and the devices are automounted when plugged in. I want to be able to unmount the devices by clicking the eject widget in thunar. I am only able to unmount through the CLI by sending a command, ie:
devmon --unmount-all
when I tried to eject with thunar I get an error dialog: "Failed to eject [device] Not authorized to perform operation".
How can I use the thunar eject button?
I am using xfce.

  • How to restore external drive using Time Machine?

My external drive quit working and it held my iTunes library and other important documents.  Everything is backed up to Time Machine.  Time Machine is another external drive.  The external drives are Seagate Go Flex that sit on the removable bases.
Any tips going forward?  I was thinking about Drobo?  I need safe backups.
Should I stop everything, get another good drive and somehow restore?  I can't just tell Time Machine to restore contents of lost drive - correct?
    How much risk is there?
I have an iMac 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
Running 10.8.2 - everything is up to date
Thanks for helping.  This is scary.

I can't just tell Time Machine to restore contents of lost drive - correct?
Sure you can. Follow the instructions linked below:
    I can't see backups for a disk/partition that's no longer connected

  • How do I view photos in an external drive using iphoto

I want to view my photos stored on an external drive using iphoto. How do I do that?

iPhoto is not a photo viewer, it's a photo manager with non-destructive processing. If you want a photo viewer, check put Preview.

  • Is it possilbe to install Windows 7 in an external drive using Boot Camp

    Hi,
Is it possilbe to install Windows 7 in an external drive using Boot Camp?  If yes, can you someone show me or direct me where I can find more info?
    Thanks a lot

    You're welcome anytime.
Microsoft doesn't make it easy sometimes
As for the harddisk it surely is possible.

  • Restoring time machine files from unmounted external drive

    Help please..
I have a time machine backup I need to restore.  It's a backup from an external drive that has failed.
When I go "enter time machine," I can't see the contents from the external drive anymore to restore it.. because the external drive isn't mounted.  It's not mounted because it has failed.  I can see when I browse the TM backup directly via finder there are files from the amounted drive in the backup... as I'd expect.
So... How do I restore drives from an unmounted external drive?
Do I need to buy a new drive and name it the same as the old drive?  Then will it show up?

While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.

  • If I replace my old iMac with a new one can I burn DVDs on an external drive using Mountain Lion or Toast?

My 2006 iMac is getting a bit long in the tooth and I was thinking of replacing it with a new one. However, Mac have not included an optical drive and I back up my photographs on DVD as well as external hard drives. I also supply DVDs of my work to friends etc.
Will I be able to burn to an external drive using Mountain Lion or other software such as Toast? Does the burn option still exist on the new machines?

    Hello,
You shouldn't have any problem, if you do just try Burn...

No, the iPad doesn't work that way. The only thing you can access is camera cards (with the adaptor).

  • HT201250 How to backup the Time Capsule to an external drive using Time Machine?

Most of my data is on my Time Capsule since the hard drive on my iMac is too small for my music/movies/pictures and also so multiple devices can wirelessly access the data. I want to back up the files from my iMac and the Time Capsule on an external hard drive using the Time Machine. However, it seems that the Time Machine ignores the Time Capsule as a data source. How can I get this to work?

No, I don't believe this solves your problem.
TIme Machine can be used with a Time Capsule as a backup solution from connected macs and their drives but not from network drives, NAS or Time Capsules.
Thus, if you store files for LAN access on a TC internal drive, and want to back them to the USB/external drive attached to that TC, you cannot use Time Machine to do so.
Time Machine has not way of backing up ANY Time Capsule or NAS or WInPC or other networked drive, as far as I can tell. You will have to use some other backup software.
This is exactly what I bought the TC for myself (tried to use the internal drive on the TC as a NAS for my LAN, storing my music and photos and documents and bought a LaCie 2TB USB3 extneral drive to connect to the TC and hoped to be able to use Time Machine to backup the internal drive to the LaCie drive....but this does not work, as TM cannot backup from a network drive or TC device.

  • How to sync ipod when hard drive and external drive used for music?

The Ipod can hold all of my music. My laptop has some current music, the external drive has old music albums. How do I set up the music library / itunes library to sync with the ipod and not erase the music from the external drive when it is not connected.
I am used to adding mp3s to player, and they stay there until deleted. Now I sync the Ipod, and if I don't keep the external drive attached, the Ipod loses the old music.
I have searched all discussion lines and do not quite understand the how to of multiple libraries versus other options.
    Thanks.

Easiest way is to make sure your exHD is plugged in before opening iTunes and syncing your iPod.

  • How do you view file on an external drive using Unix?

    Hi Folks,
I'm a serious UNIX newbie...Basically I took up unix in order to use a specific image processing software package... I've learned enough to write a script to batch process all of my images, but I have so many that I would like to use an external (USB) drive to hold the data and point the script towards those files.
Is there any way to navigate to an external drive in UNIX?
I see a lot about "mounting" drives, but I have no idea how to do this... I really need someone to hold my hand!
    Thanks.
    -Brent.

    PS:
here is an example of mounting a network drive if you have to go across the network and actually have the external drive mounted, as opposed to just copying to/from (which would probably be the case coz' things like "scp" are going to ask you for a password):
    mount -t smb server.work.com:/vol/vol0/Projects /Projects
-t is keyword for type of of filesystem and smb is the actual type.
server.work.com:/vol/vol0/Projects is path to actual directory on external networked drive. The trailing "/Projects" is the mount point and name on your computer.
Visit the "man" pages for mount in Terminal for more info, at prompt, type
    man mount
You won't have to bother with this with a locally mounted (i.e., on the same computer that you are working on) firewire or USB drive. The local path is just
    /Volumes/{NameOfExternalFirewireOrUSBdrive}/{filepath}

  • How create a mirror'ed set up on 2 external drives, using disk utility?

I Do a Time Machine Backup (external HD#1) of my entire system, but I want to do a manual bakcup of some data too in another external HD (external HD#2). As weel, I want to mirror in another external HD (external HD#3) the data of the HD#2. How can I do that? Because now, I am doinf it manually, and sometimes I don't know which HD has the newest files. Thak you.

Use a program like Carbon Copy Cloner to backup or clone or archive for each volume.
    Clone your system:

A mirror is just in case of a drive failure. Having multiple backup sets is more important and even though you said "mirror" I don't think you want to use RAID1 (mirror) for your backups, not yet. Maybe to experiment with. TimeMachine and one or two clone of your data and system, yes.

  • How do I capture footage from camera to an external drive using a macbook

i'm trying to use my external drive to store my project because otherwise i don't have enough memory. however, there is i think only one firewire port on my macbook. if i connect the camera directly to the external drive it doesn't seem like fce can find it in easy set up. how do i connect my macbook, camera, and external drive so that i can work off my external drive? anyone?

I have the same query with my macbook which only has 1 firewire 400 port.
I haven't bought an external drive yet, but want to buy the one that has the right connections.
After you connect the camera to the ext. hard drive what connection do you use between hard drive and macbook? Ethernet?
Also, any recommended hard drives, I've heard Lacie are a good one but which model?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Cannot Eject External Drive Using Space/Leopard

Since I installed Leopard, I find it very useful. But in order to eject the external drive, I must quit all applications (six), which forces me to open the same documents each time. Isn't there a way to eject the external drive so that I can keep my applications open in Spaces?

This issue got worse for me. I read a bunch of posts about troubles with Time Machine and Spaces, so I turned Spaces off on my computer and restarted it.
Time Machine immediately started working and did a small backup successfully. I tried to eject the disk to see if it would work and it did!
The problem now is that the computer won't recognize my USB drive after I ejected it. I plug it in and the drive will not show up in the Finder and the drive just keeps rhythmically clicking away. I've tried restarting my computer without luck. Also, the USB drive works normally on a different computer.
Finally, I turned Time Machine off and the drive immediately appeared in the Finder and is OK. The drive (a new FireLite formatted Mac OS Extended-Journaled) just won't work with Time Machine. For me, this all started after I turned on Spaces the first time.
