How to unmount external HDD automatically on USB 3.0 port ?

Hi All,
Could anybody help me? I use my MBP on battery power usually and have an external HDD. I gave 10 min. to go sleep. Sometimes I have to leave alone my mac e.g. for a long call or manage something. When I come back my machine is sleeping... after wake up I got an alert about unmounting, should formatting external HDD, because can't read it so on... Is any possibility (automator setting?) to unmount automatically before go sleep? I've read the community's discussion but haven't found a real solution. I think it is not lifelike to look at it very attentively during you do 1000 other things and if the unmounting is so important for OS. I trust there is a simple solution maybe you know it.
Thanks,
Zack

From my point of few its not HDD problem because the HDD works in connection with USB 2.0 port.
Im wondering if you already tried to update the USB 3.0 driver.
Did you try this HDD in connection with another computers / USB 3.0 ports?
I think its worth a check.
Furthermore I read about some USB 3.0 controller problems from different manufacturers.
Sometimes it could be possible that some compatibility problems between different devices may arise.

  • Is it possible to plug in an external HDD to the USB connection on my Airport Express for backups?

Is it possible to plug in an external HDD to the USB connection on my Airport Express for backups? As a kind of cheapo Time Capsule?

Unfortunately no, because the USB port on the AirPort Express will only work with a printer and a Keyapan remote control. Hard drives are not supported.
You would need an AirPort Extreme for that type of functionality.

  • External HDD into AEBS USB not right?

I tried plugging in an external HDD to the USB on the AEBS recently and it didn't work quite as I expected. I was expecting the disk to 'mount' on my desktop (maybe with a nice blue disk icon or something).
Instead I have to go in through Finder>Shared Computers>AEBS>HDD and then wait for it to connect.
    Is this right?
It will make it difficult for me to use in the real world for saving & sharing files from and between applications smoothly. Particularly as it seems once the HDD has gone into idle, the device isn't recognised.
Let me know if I've done something wrong.
    Thanks,
    Dan.

It's a new Lacie Neil Poulton 1TB USB2.0 external desktop drive with external power supply. All cables are new.
The drive works fine. I've plugged it in directly to the iMac to format, partition and upload some content and files.
It also works when conected via my AEBS as an Airport disk. Ie I can see it, and can access each of the partitions and load any of the files. I can also watch a HD movie that is stored on the drive.
My problem is that I can't create an alias on the desktop to mount this Airport disk. It's going to cause me problems if every time I need to access the files or load up content I need to go Finder>Shared>Airport Extreme>My Airport Disk etc as I need other applications to access it and so I need to be able to see it as a normal disk.
Please help, as when I tried to create a Finder>File>Make alias this option was greyed out.
    Many thanks,
    Dan.

But my 1 tb hdd is already formatted via ex fat which can work on both mac and Windows no limitation of file size also like if we use ntfs or fat it has a restriction of 4gb file size.

  • How to reformat external HDD?

    Hi,
I'm using a 1TB Hitachi external HDD. It has been working fine for a long time, but somehow it doesn't mount anymore. I opened Disk Utility and tried to repair it, but that didn't work. It showed me this message:
Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
How do I back up the files on a disk I can't open and how do I reformat it?
    Regards,
    Chris Wijland

One of the misconceptions that circulate on ASC is the idea that a journaled HFS volume can be corrupted by a forced unmount, as for example in a system crash or a power failure. That idea is false.
With filesystem journaling, when the volume is remounted after a forced unmount, the directory is automatically repaired, and files are restored to their previous state, using redundant information (the journal) stored on the drive. This is very well established technology, and for all practical purposes, it always works—unless the journal itself is corrupt due to a hardware failure in the drive or elsewhere in the data path. So if the directory of a journaled volume is found to be corrupt, the storage device hosting the volume has thrown at least one unrecoverable hardware error.
People who don't understand journaling will tell you to repair the corrupt volume with Disk Utility (if possible), or with Disk Warrior otherwise, and then go on using the drive as if everything is fine. That might have been good advice years ago, before the introduction of HFS journaling, when it was common for volumes to be corrupted as the result of forced unmounting. Today, because forced unmounts no longer cause that kind of corruption, it's relatively rare—or should be—and when it does happen, the implications are different.
My opinion is that when a drive throws such a severe error that a volume directory not only can't be restored by journal replay, but also can't be repaired by Disk Utility, that drive should no longer be trusted with data. It should be taken to a recycling center.
Deric Horn, the head of filesystem engineering at Apple, gave a presentation at WWDC 2012 in which he stated, with regard to journaled HFS (starting at offset 3:18 in the recording):
The journal means that you can pull power at any time, and your filesystem is still intact. There shouldn't be any data corruption or any volume corruption on that disk.
You can hear the presentation by registering for a free developer account with Apple and going to this page. (Eventually the link will break; if that's already happened, you'll just have to take my word for it.) Look for "What's New In The Filesystem" near the bottom.
If a poster on this site knows more about HFS than the Apple software engineer in charge of it, then the latter should be fired, and the former should get his job. Until that happens, I suggest you believe what Horn says.

  • External HDD mirroring using USB Interface

Has anyone out there explored the possibility of mirroring two external HDDs (identical ones) through the USB interface ? If so, I would like to know how it can be achieved.
When I say mirroring, I mean that a single write operation actually duplicates the information on two separate external disks simultaneously. Much like the professional RAID mirroring on more expensive solutions. I am looking at a very inexpensive way of having redundancy built in for safeguarding my data. Perhaps some app out there can do this for me ? Or perhaps this may be a good idea for a brand new App ? Compromise on speed may be an issue, but it would be great value for money.

That is actually a classic backup solution using time machine, where both boot drive as well as EHD is being backed up incrementally in a format which is native to OS Mavericks. Such a backup can only be used to "Restore" the files back onto the source machine. Excellent for normal backup operations.
However, what I have in mind is two sets of EHDs (external HDD) formatted to FAT or maybe the NTFS, where the files are kept in a standard format and can be read on ANY machine whether OS X or Windows.
On a proper mirrored system, both HDDs appear to be one only, and the filesystem also appear to be one. So when we handle a file from the mirrored system, the cloning on the two HDD is done transparently without the user getting to know of it. Failure of one HDD will not result in loss of data since that would be available on the other HDD, and when the faulty HDD is replaced, the data gets replicated again from the good HDD. Such a mirrored system is very expensive and not affordable by ordinary mortals like most of us.
So, to get around the expense part of the whole thing, now that we have fast USB3 interfaces, we can possible use 2 x cheap EHDs hooked onto two separate USB 3 ports, and use them as a mirrored set. It is understandable that since the computer cannot access two USB ports simultaneously, there will be some trade-off to the speed of handling the two EHDs, but, that is acceptable. At least we have two identical sets of data available, which can be used in an emergency on any other system. Should one EHD crash, we can always extract all data from the second one.
I am not sure if such an arrangement is possible using the existing functionality of the OS X, and so someone may need to whip up an app or a script for doing this. Alternately, some really clever geek could come up with some remarkable solution/work-around. Looking forward for some bright spark from somewhere.

Hello! Resetting the ports is done by resetting the pmu. press the button once with all external cables unhooked. Below is a pict of an example of the pmu location. Also an intermittent problem is often a bad cable. Tom

  • How to share external HDD using SFTP or FTP on Mountain Lion?

    Hi,
I would like to know how to share my extrenal HDD connected to my iMac using SFTP or FTP. I have seen that it is possible on OSX 10.5 but not in 10.8.
    Thanks.

you could always download a free sftp server then you could make any drive external or internel avaible from ftp clinets
but imho it's a very odd way to want to share unless it's over the Internet then in all cases ftp and sftp the wrong solution
smd, airdrop and tons of others are more modern and faster and easier to share files between computers no matter the operating system

  • How to import external HDD iPhoto library to internal storage Photos+iCloud

I have a larger iPhoto library of +250GB on a external USB drive, I want all of that in iCloud with the new Photos app, however I would also like to have them on my internal drive on the 'optimized storage' options so I have access to them (and if need be the full version can download from iCloud to my internal drive). How do I do this?

So here's how I think this could work:
    1. Upload the library on your USB drive to iCloud, note that the drive needs to be formatted HFS+ in order to work based on this article: https://help.apple.com/photos/mac/1.0/?lang=en#/pht211de786
    2. Create a new library on your internal drive
    3. Make that library your System Photo Library in Photos Preferences
    4. Turn on iCloud Photo Library and set the preference to 'Optimize Mac Storage'
Doing this will no longer sync the library on the USB drive with iCloud.

  • How to open external HDD box on 3,5" 320 GB Toshiba HDD?

I have an old 3,5" 320 GB Toshiba HDD (this model: http://pan2.fotovista.com/dev/2/5/00496952/l_00496952.jpg)
(and no garantee anymore) I think it's broken I'm not sure. Because there is power and the LED is blinking but the HD don't start (I mean there isn't "this" start sound).
So my question is how can I open the case to connect it directly into my PC or what can I do?
Sry for my bad English ^^

    Hi
Looks like a HDD malfunction head crash, etc
In my opinion there are no many options.
If the warranty is valid then you should visit your dealer and ask for the replacement, fix, etc
If the warranty is not valid then the dealer would not replace this part.
What to sayin such case you could try to remove the HDD from the bracket (dont ask me how, I dont have this HDD) and could try to connect it to a desktop PC using a IDE or SATA cable (this depends on the HDD) to ensure if it's possible to get a access to the HDD

When i need to close the disk down to put more musik or movies on it, i need to select which one i will close save.
The problem is i can't rename those or put another icon on it to see witch disk i need to select.
Even if i rename the disk on the pc the main name always is toshiba HDD.
I hope you know what i mean because I'm worry to lose data or damage the disk to not close corectly

Hmm not quite sure if this would work but try to format the USB flash memory stick firstly
Before the USB flash memory stick would be formatted, you could be able to change the file system as well as the device name.
