How to unpartition a mac hard drive on OSX 10.7.4?
I have tried using Windows in the past, and I want to put everything back on to one large OSX partition.
However, I get a certain error message when I try to return it to one unified disk.
It says:
Your disk could not be returned to a single partition.
An error occured while restoring the disk to a single partition.
The easiest way to remove it is to use Disk Utility.
Can't stress this enough. Backup, backup, backup! before doing any of the following. And I don't mean Time Machine. Also be aware that you will not have an emergency drive to boot to, or restore OS X from. So first having a backup on a bootable drive is essential, since you could restore that. To make a complete, bootable clone, use SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner. You can also use Disk Utility to clone one drive to another.
1) Make the Recovery partition visible in Disk Utility by using a program like Secrets: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/27025/secrets . Install the System Preference pane by double clicking the downloaded pref pane. Open the System Preferences and click on Secrets. Click on the Disk Utility heading at the left. At the right, turn on the check box for "Show Hidden Partitions". Click the "Update Secrets" button at the lower left. Close the System Preferences.
2) Launch Disk Utility. Highlight the Recovery partition, right click on it and select Mount the partition. Or highlight the partition and click the Mount icon at the top of Disk Utility's pane.
3) With the Recovery partition highlighted, erase the partition. You may get an error message, ignore it.
4) In the left column, highlight the physical drive the Recovery partition is on. Then select the Partition tab at the right.
5) Highlight the Recovery partition and press the minus sign.
6) Click and hold on the bottom edge of the partition above and drag it to the bottom, if it doesn't go there automatically, the press apply.

How do I Rename Mac Hard Drive with Home Folder Only?
Hello,
I have a Macbook Pro with an SSD which has OSX Snow Leopard and my Applications, and the other hard drive has my Home Folder. I replaced the optical drive with the SSD.
The other hard drive has the standard name of 'Macintosh HD'. I need to change it to something without spaces in order to get some developer software to work (i.e., it can't have spaces in the workspace name, and now that my Home folder is on a drive that doesn't have OSX, it refers to it as '/Volumes/Macintosh HD/.../...'
I ran into a disaster by simply changing the 'Macintosh HD' name to 'MacintoshHD' - It prevented me from logging in and I had to use the OSX Install disk to use the command line to rename the hard drive back to 'Macintosh HD'. My guess is because my account was referencing a home folder location that no longer existed.
My question is how can I rename my hard drive with my Home Folder? Can I change the hard drive name, and then immediately change my Account to reference the new hard drive name (and thus the new location of my home folder), and then reboot? Will this work if I do this in this order? Or is there another way to handle this entirely?
I'm very hesitant to try this again as I don't want to have to go back and use the OSX install disk - my SSD took the place of the optical drive and I have to go and take it out, put it back in...etc.
Any help is appreciated.
Regards
Chicago29I don't have a setup to test this, but you might try the following:
Create a second "normal" admin account with its home folder on the boot drive, then log out of your regular account and log into the new one. From there you could rename the large hard drive, then go to System Preferences>Accounts, select the first account, then right-click>Advanced options to change its home directory path to match the new HD name. That way you're not changing the home folder path "in mid-air."
It's probably a good idea to keep a tiny "self-contained" admin account on the boot drive anyway, so you don't get locked out in the event of future trouble accessing the large disk. -

Time Machine Linked to New Upgraded Mac Hard Drive
I recently upgraded my Mac hard drive. Unfortunately, Time Machine linked to the new hard drive. My computer hard drive icon now shows up as a Time Machine back-up drive.
I went into Time Machine preferences and changed the back-up drive to my regular external back-up hard drive. When I go into Time Machine Preferences - Select Disk my external back-up hard drive is the only drive listed.
However, my Mac hard drive icon still shows up with the blue Time Machine back-up icon. Any ideas how to unlink my Mac hard drive from Time Machine so that it shows up in the Finder window with the typical gray hard drive icon instead of the blue Time Machine icon?felicityrose wrote:
the replacement computer I wanted (and have not gotten) is a new unibody macbook, which does not have Firewire
Does your drive also have a USB connection? Many F/W drives do. If so, you can do it directly. While USB is slower than FireWire, it's a whole lot faster than wireless.
Can I just drag the whole back-up file from my hard drive onto the friend's computer and then connect via wireless?
No, that won't work.
Depending on what kind of Mac your friend has, you might be able to copy the whole drive to a USB drive via Disk Utility, then migrate from there to your new computer.
Or is this an impossible dream and I am better off taking it in to the experts?
Yes. Absolutely. Entirely. It will be well worth the wait. -
I have an alias of one of my external hard drives in my trash. When I tried to delete it, it showed that I was deleting 80,000 files and counting. I stopped the delete process and when I clicked on "show original" all my external H.D.'s and my Mac hard drive show up. How do I delete this alias from the trash without loosing all my files? When I tried to drag it back to the desk top, it just made a duplicate and remained in the trash. When I turned off the external H.D., the trash was then empty. Tried rebooting the computer and then turning the external hard drive back on and the alias shows up in the trash again. Much help appreciated.
RichIn Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.
If it does contain data...

Mac Pro tower can support drives up to 4TB is size.

How do i reformat my hard drive on mac mini late 2011 with yosemite before selling my mac
how do i reformat my hard drive on mac mini late 2011 with yosemite before selling my mac
You can't legally sell or give away that computer with Yosemite installed.
Before you sell or give away your computer, in addition to the steps listed in this support article, take these steps:
1. Run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test. The buyer will do this (or he should), and you don't want to be surprised by the results.
2. Reset the PRAM and the SMC, which might contain personal information.
3. If you set a firmware password, remove it by running Firmware Password Utility in Recovery mode.
4. If you activated FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, turn it off.
5. If you use Boot Camp, the partition must be deleted.
6. If you created any other data partitions on the internal drive, remove them in Disk Utility.
7. If the machine has an internal hard drive, erase the one remaining data partition with the option to zero out data. An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You can't legally or practically transfer any software downloaded from the Mac App Store to the new owner of the machine, even if it was free. That includes OS X, so if you upgraded to OS X 10.7 or later, you must reinstall an older OS, either from the installation media, if applicable, or by starting up in Internet Recovery mode (option-command-R at the startup chime.) If you installed from physical media, deliver those to the new owner.
If you're selling the machine, or donating it in working order, and it originally shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, then you have the option of installing either from the discs that came with it or from a retail Snow Leopard disc (which you must then transfer to the buyer.) The buyer should understand that if he doesn't get the original discs from you, he won't get the bundled iLife applications or the Apple Hardware Test. Replacements for the original discs can be ordered from Apple.
The new owner will have to redownload any software that came from the App Store, including OS X upgrades, under his or her Apple ID. If you ever updated the bundled iLife applications (Garage Band, iMovie, and iPhoto) through the App Store, you can't transfer those either. The buyer will have to purchase them.
Remove the machine from your list of registered products. If it's still covered by an AppleCare Protection Plan, transfer the coverage to the new owner by following the instructions in the AppleCare Terms and Conditions (under the heading "Transfer of Plan.") -

I am looking to back up my MAC, and I need to know how big of an external hard drive I need
I am looking to back up my MAC, and I need to know how big of an external hard drive I need. How do I determine this?
Well, they recommend at least 2 - 3 times the size of your hard drive if you are using Time Machine because that keeps making backups until it runs out of space (and then deletes the oldest to make room for the newest).
However, if you prefer to have a bootable clone as a backup, you need about the same size as your hard drive since it is a perfect copy of your system (unless you want to partition and keep an older clone separately).
So, check to see how large your hard drive is and go from there. -
