How do I unzip files on my mba 11 inch? I was told to use archive utilites but I can't find it.

I am having the same problem. I downloaded 5 Smilebox slideshows and downloaded the installer as instructed when I tried to open the files. None open, with DiskImageMounter and Disk Utility. Each time I get the installer instructions.

II lost my HP hard drive after doing a HP Recovery Backup using Windows 7. I now have a new computer using Windows 8.1 and I have successfully unzipped all my files including my Thunderbird and Firefox profiles,. I have installed Firefox and Thunderbird on the new computer but cannot figure out how to get my bookmarks (Firefox) or my emails (Thunderbird) off these old profiles. Just substituting the old profiles stops the applications from opening and obviously I did not create these using the application export facility. Can the application be fooled by renaming the file with the name of the new profile? or is there some internal code that the program checks. I'm totally at a loss.

The Profile names have to match what Firefox and Thunderbird is expecting to find. Any difference and they may not start, or they may just create a new Profile ''as they are supposed to when the expected Profile is "gone".''
You can rename the old Profiles to the names of the new Profiles; or you can carefully edit the profiles.ini file to match the Profile names of the old Profiles. ''One mistake and it's toast, though.''
But IMO, the best thing to do is to go to the folder level where the '''profiles.ini''' file and the '''profiles''' folderset is located --

where you should find '''profiles.ini''' and the '''Profiles''' folder, ''and maybe other files / folders''
Copy that whole '''Firefox''' folder from the old installation over to the new one.
With Thunderbird that should work the same as it is based upon the basics in Firefox, but I have never used Thunderbird.

Zip files can be opened with the built in 'Archive Utility' application. Double click any zip file & it will try to unzip it.
This application is tucked away inside /System/Library/CoreServices/Archive Utility. If you want to set preferences for it you need to open the location in Finder by using the 'Go Menu > Go to Folder…', enter /System/Library/CoreServices/ for the path & then open the Archive Utility application and look in it's preferences.
I expect that zipping & rezipping will not do anything useful for you. I suspect that the file format is the issue.
Unzip some files & post what the Finders 'File > Get info' panel shows, take a screenshot of it with 'cmd+shift+4', then drag the crosshairs to select the area. it will appear on the Desktop for uploading here.
You may need to find a compatible player or find a way to convert them if the Mac cannot play them.
P.S. to zip a file(s) select the items & right click, select 'Compress x items' & you will get a zip archive - I don't think it will help you though

Winzip knows how to read tar files.
This is just a wild guess, but try this:
- Copy the file, and rename it jexcelapi_2_5_9.tar.gz
- You may have to do this in cmd.exe because the Windows graphical shell often screws up file names
- Then use WinZip on the copy of the file with the new name.
I'm thinking that maybe when you downloaded the file the filename got corrupted.

For this first intall gunzip. A free version is available here:

After intallation go to cmd promp and transfer to the path where gzip is installed.
Finally type in gzip -d <full path of the file to be decompressed>.

We've been experimenting with this today.
You can avoid getting the file by turning off the autodownload in the IM settings. The sender sees the file transfer, but it's not going to your machine. To get the file, you then need to click on it. It IS still going to Skype's servers though waiting to be retrieved and that is a worry.
A link is generated to retrieve the file. The link is sharable with anyone who is a skype subscriber.
Are these files ever deleted?
This makes me worry about the security all files sent via skype since it is the way-station and holder of these files. For instance, is it possible for a computer to check the randomly assigned numbers until they find all sorts of things?

1. I open my Project (myProject)
2. I Mount the JAR to the FileSystem (like mypackages.jar = which includes com.mus.de.myClass.java)
3. I Mount the File to the FileSystem (like c:\..myfiles..\myProject)
3.1 I add the File to my Project
4. I select File | New -> Classes | Main
4.1 I typed "import com.mus.de.myClass.java" to refer to this package.
4.2 I called some of the public methods
