How to update 1st gen

Purchased 1st gen ipod touch new.  I cannot update any longer.  Why is this the case?  I spent a lot of money on this device when I purchased new, and now it seems worthless. I will not buy another apple product

The 1G can only go as high s 3.1.3
To find compatible apps:
iOSSearch - search the iTunes store for compatible apps.
Vintapps 3.1.3 - paid app.
Apple Club - filter apps by iOS version.

Is there a way to update 1st gen iPad past 5.1.1?

Yes but if I just wanted to get on the Internet I could have just bought a cheap tablet I can throw away when nothing works but Internet access. Wont b long and all the apps will b outdated. And it slower going through safari to access my outdated apps and not near as convenient. I was going to get an iPad air but I figure it will b almost useless in two or three years.

  • Can't Update 1st-gen Shuffle

I have iTunes 7.0.2 and Mac OS X 10.4.8. My (1st-gen) shuffle is recognized and syncs older or non-DRM songs just fine, but won't sync some newer songs purchased through the iTunes Music Store. I get a message telling my to perform an update from the Summary tab.
Unfortunately, the Update and Restore buttons on the summary tab are disabled, so I can't use them. Nor can I use the iPod Updater 2.0.1 -- it never recognizes the iPod. The iPod Updater 2006-06-28 *does* recognize the iPod, but fails to recognize a software version. Likewise, the summary tab in iTunes says "n/a" for both Software Version and Serial Number. (I've tried "updating" using the 06-28 version; it tries, but gives me an error.)
How can I update this thing? I'd like to have my newer music on my iPod.

I downloaded and tried the Shuffle Reset Utility, but it couldn't restore the shuffle. I received an error message saying "No Firmware."
However, I went to my wife's Windows computer, downloaded the Shuffle reset utility, and it worked fine, there. In fact, the Shuffle worked flawlessly with Windows (I was able to sync it with my wife's iTunes library, etc).
I thought -- great, back in business! However, when I returned to the Mac and tried to sync with my own music library, I have the same problems; the Shuffle's version, serial number, et cetera isn't recognized, I can't sync newer songs, et cetera.
Obviously, the Shuffle isn't the problem. Also, the Shuffle worked fine with my Mac before the latest iTunes update; I'm beginning to think it's a Mac software issue with the update. The other possibility is a connection issue, but I've tried all the direct USB ports on the computer, and also a powered hub (also, the fact that the Shuffle worked fine, before, makes me think that the connection probably isn't the issue).
    Dunno.

  • Updated 1st gen iPad, unable to access apps.

I recently updated my 1st gen iPad and my pictures and music seems to have transferred but none of my apps did. I can see them but cannot open them, they are dark in appearance as they look before they have completed downloading. I accessed the app store and was able to download a new app...

I plugged in my ipad and ITunes says "iTunes was interrupted while restoring the contents of the iPad. Would you like to retore this iPad again now?". I pressed continue restore and a message came up that says "An error occurred while restoring this iPad (-1)". Im not sure where to go from here, or how to "unsync" and "resync".

  • How to update 2nd gen ipod to install apps?

how do i update 2nd gen ipod to install apps? i have no clue what operating sys this is or where to find it. the version is 4.2.1 if that means anything.
i just got it for my son & he wants to be able to text me w/ this device. any help is appreciated

To more easily find compatible apps:
iOSSearch - search the iTunes store for compatible apps.
Apple Club - filter apps by iOS version.
Starting when iOS 7 was released, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)
App Store: Downloading Older Versions of Apps on iOS - Apple Club
App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app
You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.

  • How does the 1st gen appletv with the hard drive work?

I want to know what the hard drive records and stores. Poscasts? Purchased media? Rented media? Your itunes media? Ripped DVD's?
What does the hard drive hold media wise?
Does the 1st gen have the same features as the 2nd, netflix, poscasts, PC media streaming?

Does the 1st gen directly access podcasts without going thru itunes? Like the 2nd gen can do. Can the drive store podcasts?

  • Updated 1st gen mini to 1.4. Now my 5GB mini is 4GB!!!!

    Hi guys,
I have a real problem. I recently removed all my iTunes music, iTunes software and iPod software to install a new hard drive.
Upon installing the iPod software, i just downloaded the latest software updater and updated the iPod. I have the 1st generation 5GB iPod mini. However, after updating it to 1.4 with the latest updater, by 5GB mini has a total storage of 4GB (3.76..GB).
I have tried to restore the mini to factory conditions etc etc and cannot get the mini to format the drive back to 5GB. Has anyone else suffered this same problem and is their a soluntion?.
    Look forward to any assistance.

  • Problem Updating 1st Gen Nano software from 1.2 to 1.3

Try this as a separate thread...
I have a first gen nano with software version 1.2 (from the 6-28-06 update) and when I plug it into my usb port, i tunes 7.0.1.8 launches to sync. This is as it should be; however this action gives a prompt to update from version 1.2 to 1.3, which I wanted to do.
The problem is that after a short while, I get a message that state that the nano can not be updated because some of the files on it are being used by another program. This is not true as best as I can , other than itunes itself being open.
Any help with this problem would be appreciated...

    Hey, tampa!
That's something I was going to mention, if the other suggestions didn't help.
    Try this:
    Go to Task Manager.
Under the Processes tab, end "iTunes.exe". unplugg all the other USB devices from your computer, reset your iPod (hold the Menu and center buttons together for 7 seconds), then connect it again.
Then, I was also going to say that this could be drive letter confusion in Windows. Have you tried assigning your iPod a different drive letteR? try these steps:
Log off of any other users on your computer.
1 - Don’t plug in your iPod yet.
2 - Go to "START -> Control Panel -> Admin Tools (if you don't see this, click on "classic view" button on the left panel) -> Computer Management."
3 - Click on the "Disk Management" button in the left panel area.
4 - Now, with "Computer Management" and Control Panel windows opened, reset your iPod, and connect it.
5 - Right-click on your iPod's listing there (after a few moments when it gets recognized in this drive window), and click on "Change Drive letter and Paths". Then the "Change..." button.
Here's what it should look like:
Assign your iPod the letter "M" "N", "O" or the like (further along in the alphabet).
For more details, see this article:

We'll see what happens with this..

My itunes said there was a new software update I could download so I clicked ok. The "apple software update" box ran for days!!!!...I am not joking. Supposedly it has to backup, then download and restore. I finally had to stop it not knowing if it was stuck or not so I clicked "stop"...now it is stuck in the cancelling mode....for days!!!! My itunes is no longer on my desk top so now what? I am so new to all of this stuff!

Ok, I have itunes (newest version) back on my desktop. No way am I going to try to download new 2.2 software until I hear otherwise. I might though go to the apple store and have them load it. I guess I resolved my own issue this time!

  • MBA 1st Gen and Lion Performance

    Hi,
Does anyone have experience on updating 1st Gen MBA to OSX Lion? How is performance feeling and memory consuption?
Mine have almoust 300mb RAM left and with Lion this should be worst. Correct?
    Cheers, Thanks

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
I recommend you to keep Snow Leopard, because if Snow Leopard consumes most of the RAM, Lion will consume more memory. Also, note that your MacBook Air has got soldered RAM, so it's impossible to increase RAM

  • Hi all - any idea how to download songs from an old AOL iTunes account - have updated to Apple ID which is fine for new songs but didn't realise this wouldn't include the old songs.  Have a 1st gen ipod with the original purchases on if that helps

Hi all - any idea how to download songs from an old AOL iTunes account - have updated to Apple ID which is fine for new songs but didn't realise this wouldn't include the old songs.  Have a 1st gen ipod with the original purchases on if that helps

....... is there a way for me to get my old music library (which was controlled by my dad's apple ID) onto my new mac, but from that point on, start using my own apple ID for purchases?........
Yes, once the content is in iTunes on your computer, just click it to play and authorise your computer to play it by entering your Dad's ID and password.
Log into your own account and start purchasing your own content which will then be added to the existing content.
