How to update a nokia handset?

is it possible to up-date the nokia firmware without having to switch the phone on.
problem; when i switch the phone on, the nokia hand shake appears, then when the main screen supposed to appear its just a white screen, after a while the phone just shuts down.

Hi,I disagree with deepestblue, (sorry) fot 2 reasons.
1) Not all updates are available over the air !
2) It is always adviseable to back up first ( better to be safe than sorry), Google how to update softwate on Nokia phone and see what you find ! I know latest Nokia phones have user data protection, but think it is more advisable to use computer than phone !
The decision is yours, both methods are possible, so make your own choice, just RESEARCH first.

@IRFAN_aadat if you are on Windows, you need Microsoft Zune. In Mac OS X, your need the Windows Phone-App. However, which software version and which firmware version do you have? The last update was last year!

If your network has no new updates for your phone then you are on the most recent version for your handset. Attempting to update your phone to a version not approved by your network will indeed void your warranty and potentially damage your phone.
Also it isn't permitted to discuss non approved methods of flashing phones on this forum.

The Nokia 110 will update over the air or it can be updated at a Nokia Care point.
Open the application SW update (see icon below) to check for an update using the Mobile Data network.
Press the 'Accept As Solution' icon if I have solved your problem, click on the Star Icon below if my advice has helped you!

How to update the Nokia 1520 using sd card

I have a Lumia 1520. I do not have a WiFi connedtion for phone updates. The first update I did was yesterday and I had to find a free wifi hotspot. I understand that you can do this via a computer to micro SD card to phone. How do I do this? I can find no guide to tell me how as I have searched this site, google and Nokia + Windows Phone sites and can find nothing. I 'think' I can down load latest updates to my computer and move it to a SD card but how do I get the phone to run/install the update.
A how to guide would be nice for this as its inconvienent to search out wifi hotspots all the time.

Unfortunately it is not unknown for network provider to give out incorrect code but your code should be in similar format to this as you mention:
#pw+000000000000000+1#
You use repeated "*" presses to obtain "pw+", allowing about a second between repeated presses; once you have mastered it the first time there is no problem.
Note that there are only limited attempts at inputting this code before you are locked out.

Thank you for your post. To update your Nokia 6680, you need to download Nokia PC Suite on your PC and install it. After the installation, open it and plug in your device to your PC with the USB cable, once it recognises your device it should search automatically for the latest update.

you can also check thru Nokia Suite on PC but if it states that you have the latest version, then there is no updates available for you then.

Phone not working after firmware update for nokia ...

I tried updating my nokia 5800 today when the new firmware was released. i have already updated my other phone including another 5800. But when I updated the firmware of another 5800 (my 5800 through nokia software updater from pc/laptop), after the nokia updater application said that the update was successful, my phone showed the nokia logo with the new firmware version. It's supposed to reboot automatically and continue as normal but after waiting for like 15 minutes, my phone's still not turning on and still showed on the screen that the phone was not connected. That's when I unplugged it off from the USB cable and tried to turn it on, but it will just vibrate for a few seconds and then nothing! It won't turn on or work! I've tried to search on how to fix this problem but to no avail.. please help me.. is my phone going to work again?

There two ways to update/upgrade your phone firmware. By NSU, pc running pcsuite connected to your phone; and by FOTA or over the air if supported by your provider. Don't bother with that parameters, just request from your provider the setup/configuration for data e.g 3g, gprs, mms ect. or you can go to Nokia for it. Data access must be activated & running to avail for FOTA. Get the product code of your phone(written in the box) or, under the battery compartment, for it will ask for that if there is an upgrade available in your area.
Download the latest version of pcsuite for your phone, then install it to your pc/laptop and connect your phone via cable (recommended), when connection is established, select from the menu software update. You should have internet connection with that pc.
In over the air(FOTA), connection via 3g (recommended, faster) just look in the menu for software update, it will prompt you what to enter. Data services that I mentioned above should be activated, supported & tested running, else no go.

These are the maing things I am waiting by the next update for nokia n8! please don't release new update without completing these requests below! we have paid big money to buy this device and i am not satisfied for nothing, I am regreting of what i have done, i could buy another os platform phone! damn but i had faith in nokia, but now i know i have done a big mistake. atleast please get these updates on as soon as possible. nokia you have just lost one customer!
1. Media transfer in progress message ( never ends, when mp3 files copy to the device )
2. Go to application and scroll down using right hand scroll bar ( see it is really laggy/choppy - not only in application everywhere if you use scrollbar its really laggy choppy!!!)
but, if you go to, application, music player/photo album, and use the scroll bar ( it's really nice smooth ) we want like that in all applications/every where.
3. Music player with custom equalizer, ( not enough, pop, rock, bass booster etc )
4. NTFS file reader.
5. mkv/avi bug ( some mkv/avi files play but some not )
6. reddish purple display bug ( half side reddish color in screen saver clock )
7. Video camera recording at 30 fps with auto focus ( n8 can record at 30 fps with autofocus)
8. New browser!!!!
9. proccessor over clock to 800mhz

2/ you can mod the scroll speed
3/You can customize your equaliser with tunewiki, download for free on ovistore
5/mkv and avi are only containers but there are so so so many formats of image or sound, just think about it and just use a converter
6/ i never saw this, keep it safe and don't let it fall next time
7/ it's already recording at 30fps for tvquality..
It's impossible for hd quality i'm actually experiencing it (30fps for hd + autofocus), the processor OR (maybe) the mass storage is not enough speedy, the result is a movie with a lag every 2seconds, even set at 30fps the final average stay between 27 and 29 (depends of the movie's lenght, moreover the autofocus is very badly used and very loud, you can hear it parasiting the sound of the video
Is your eyes able to see the difference between a video captured in 25fps and 30fps?
8/for your browser (data or internet) you can dl some on ovistore for free (xplore etc.. OPERA etc..)
9/ overclock??? Did you see or hear any fan in your n8?? Or do you want to melt it?
Just think about what you're asking! It 's possible or just ridiculous. how do you speak of the best phone ever released?
Just learn to use it and to know it, maybe you will be able to criticize it
