How to update Firefox

I need to update Firefox, but "Check for Updates" in the Help menu is grayed out, even though I'm logged on to my computer as an admin. (I think the auto updates aren't happening either, probably for the same reason, whatever it is; that's why my Firefox version is so old.) It also won't let me install a new version when I download it -- says I lack the appropriate permissions. Besides telling me to log on as an admin, the Help article says, "To make Check for Updates" enabled permanently, change the permissions on the Firefox installation directory." But it doesn't say what or where the "Firefox installation directory" is, how to get there, or how to change the permissions. Searches in Firefox Help for "installation directory" don't find anything useful. Help?

Hi,
Is there a reason why you want to downgrade from a lower version to an even lower version? You can do the downgrade yourself but I won't tell you where to get the link to it as I'd be telling you to go back to a old and unsupported version of Firefox and also because the link is easily searchable.
Feel free to use the old unsupported and insecure versions of Firefox. Please however remember that puts your System and personal data at an increased risk. You may then wish to mitigate that by having well rehearsed bare metal restore strategies or using a virtual machine.

How to update Firefox in Solaris 11?

I installed here successfully Solaris 11.
When I looked at the Firefox browser it is still v3.6.10
When I look into the "Help" menu of Firefox on other systems there is a menu entry "Update Firefox" or "Search for updates".
This is (was) not the case in Firefox v3.6.10.
How can I update Firefox here?
Do I really have to manually de-install old (=current) and manually install new version?

I've recently installed Suse Linux Enterprise Server 10 sp3. It has firefox 3.5.2. I'd like to know how to update it to the latest version. I've downloaded and decompressed the firefox file but cannot install it (update the residetn version).

Install VirtualBox on your desktop/laptop
Download Oracle Linux.
Use that to create a virutal machine under VBox
Download Oracle 11.2 for Linux
Install that on your virtual Linux server.
Then, getting back to your original question, you can just access firefox from your desktop and not worry about using from the vm.

I was updating Firefox from version 6 to version 7, after updating I tried to open Firefox and the message I got is this: This application has failed to start because xul.dll was not found. How can I fix this?

I was updating Firefox to the newest version 7.0.1 from version 6.0.2 I think it was, I clicked the restart Firefox button that always comes up after updating. It started updating and then Firefox never restarted like it was supposed to after it was done updating. I then tried to open Firefox and it told me "This application has failed to start because xul.dll was not found." I did have Firefox crash on maybe about 30 minutes or so earlier which bothered me because I have been using Firefox for years and never had it crash on me before but I didn't think much of it at the time it happened because I was able to go back onto Firefox and finish what I had been working on. A while later I checked for updates and updated. The first time I tried to update it didn't work though so I had to shutdown Firefox and reopen Firefox and start the update a second time. It was after the second time that when I tried to open Firefox I got that message about failing to start because xul.dll can't be found. I filed a crash report when my Firefox crashed. This would have been around 1am-2am in the morning that Firefox first crashed and then wouldn't allow me to open it after updating. I have a DELL laptop running the Windows XP operating system but the laptop is probably at least 6 or 7 years old. The laptop will no longer charge so I always have to have it plugged into an outlet. Both my laptop hard drive and my external hard drive give me messages that I am running out of disk space on my hard drive. I bought this laptop 6 or 7 years ago second hand so it could be even older. In short it's a piece of crap and it gives me all kinds of issues but I currently can't afford a new one, but I have never had any problems with Firefox and I use Firefox more than any other aspect of my laptop so it's really really bothering me. May you please help me fix it?

Unfortunately I tried that and it didn't work. Thanks for the help though. I tried to uninstall and it said I couldn't because the file is corrupt or something, but I think I finally got it uninstalled and/or deleted or whatever, but now I try to reinstall/download it again from the beginning and I can't. No matter what I do I can not get Firefox working again. No matter how many times I try to redownload it. Any other suggestions?

Updated Firefox, now when I open a new tab, there is two seperate google search bars; how do I get rid of the unnecessary search bar?

I updated Firefox, and after I restarted it, when I opened a new tab, I found that I now had two Google search bars: one next to where you type web addresses, and one right above my pinned sites (or my frequently visited sites). I'm just trying to:
1. Figure out why it is necessary to have two of the pretty much identically useful search bars when I really only need one (or can physically type Google in)
and
2. How do I get rid of the unnecessary second Google search bar above my frequently visited and therefore pinned sites.
If you have any ideas of how to remove this annoying addition, I would appreciate it.

I am guessing that you installed an extension, related to "new tab", which added the first search bar. Firefox 31 in includes a search bar for the "new tab" page; so now you have two.
Take a look at that extension (Options or Preferences) to see how to disable ones of those 2 search bars. Or see if an update has been released for that extension, specifically for Firefox 31, with an option to disable the search bar.

Simply go to:
1.View 2.Select tool bars 3. Uncheck any of the toolbars below: a. Babylon toolbar b. Softonic Eng 7 Community tool bar!
4.Finish.... if nothing happened try to unchechked other tool bars.

You appear to be using the Developer Edition / Aurora pre-release version, which creates a new Profile upon installation or update on the Aurora channel. Open '''Options > General''' and tick or untick the box at the top which says '''Allow Firefox Developer Edition and Firefox to run at the same time'''. Once you restart ''[as told to]'' you will "toggle" over to the other Profile, where your bookmarks are - ''hopefully''.
