I tried through itunes, it is impossible. The plate jumps out - this version ON is the actual version.
iOS 4.2.1 is the end of the line for the iPhone 3G, there are no further updates available.

<Edited by Host>With the IMEI number I was able to check your iPhone's simlock status, it is locked. If it's jailbroken and you are updating the phone to a higher iOS you will lose your unlock and jailbreak status. As for updating the iPhone, you can plug your iPhone into a computer via USB and run iTunes, it should then automatically scan for a newer version of iOS.

You can't. If your device qualifies for the most recent iOS version (your iPhone 4S does), that is the version that will be installed. If, on the other hand, your device was an iPhone 4 (not the S), the device does *not* qualify for iOS 8 so iOS 7 would instead be installed.

Hi, how are you going about it at present? Are you trying via Wi-Fi or by linking your phone to a computer and using iTunes?
There is a massive, massive demand for this at present so if you've started to download the software and then get an error message, close 'Settings' and retry again. The same is true if you're seeing a massive time for download displayed, 20+ hrs.
Keep trying at different times, I had about 5-6 attempts before it worked for me last night on both my iPhone and iPad.

(1) Plug into computer
(2) Launch iTunes and select your iPod in the sidebar (in "DEVICES")
(3) If iTunes reports an available iPod update, click the "Update" button
(4) WAIT for the process to finish. Do NOT interrupt.

I Don't think this is possible, as it would mean having to downgrade from IOS 5.1.1, on a 3GS you will see a slight performance decrease but I do not think that you can update to anything but the most recent software update.
