How to update iPod touch 4 Gen to current IOS? It is 3 years old and won't update past IOS 4.2.1.
I had to restore my iPod when I bought a new computer and it won't update the IOS. iTunes tells me it is up-to-date, but all the apps say I need IOS 5. How can I update this? Thanks
If you are using IOS 4, you need to connect to iTune (computer) to update software.

until I updated him from SnowLeopard 10.6.8 to Mavericks 10.9.2.
2 Days all was OK. Next Morning-Start he needs (until now) 3 minutes to show me a SCREEN only milky white. After that he starts like ever with all ICONS in about 1 minute. (together 4 min.)
..But I must notice, that I cannot make anything, because the „BLUETOOTH APPLE WIRELESS KEYBOARD and the APPLE MAGIC MOUSE“ doesn't work anything like before.
I could nothing do, I must drop my APPLE only out.

Is there anyway to upgrade the software on the ipod touch gen 2, its up to date on the software but need a newer one is it possible to get newer software to get more games and apps to work. Any help would be great.
The CPU in that device does not have enough internal RAM to support any iOS above 4.2.1

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your iPod. Only if you back up your iPod manually before syncing, you can restore your device from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
Do this:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your iPod to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your ipod without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your device for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the iPod for the first time.
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.

My grandson's ipod touch gen 4 was stolen so I picked up a used ipod touch gen 2 only to find out I can't upgrade beyond 4.2.1 iOS, so I am trying to find apps that run on that iOS. Enter an unfriendly App Store for those of us not used to using it!

My iPod Touch Gen 5 will no longer synch with iTunes on my computer. Only change since this happened is update to iPod to OS 8.1.1 iPod synch remains stuck in "Step 8 of 8"
On your computer go to the control panel (hover in the lower right corner) then programs, add/remove programs
Uninstall iTunes, Apple Mobile Device Service, Apple Application Support then go to apple.com and redownload and reinstall iTunes and try again.
You won't lose any content, you're not deleting that, just the programs that access them.
What is thought to happen is that sometimes a new version of itunes doesn't update the drivers in those other two programs. The only way to update the drivers is to force it by uninstalling the programs which allows itunes to write the correct ones.
My iPad and iPod did exactly the same thing and this is how I fixed it. -

When I click on "update," it will ask me for my password, the it'll say "waiting" with the little bar, then the icon will return to normal, but no update has taken place and the App Store icon will show the original number of updates. I have turned the wifi on and off and rebooted many times.
If I do a restore from iTunes, do I lose all game progresses?

Your game progresses are part of the backup data. In order to save them before you restore, back up manually by right clicking on your device in the device list and choosing "backup". I purchased a used ipod touch 2 nd gen 8 gb. ITunes prompts me to upgrade to iTunes to IOS 4.1 from 2.2.1 but I get an error message #1 saying there is a hardware issue. I have tried all of the things the guide says to do but it still won't work. Any suggestions?

Otherwise you will have to go to elsewhere. Jailbreaking voids the warranty and Apple will no longer help. -
