First update your 10.6 version to 10.6.8 from the software update under the Apple Menu.
This will add direct access to the Mac App store via a new application.
Now launch the App Store from your Applications folder - Its the new icon a letter A formed from a ruler pencil and pen on a blue circle !
Once launched you need to add your iTunes account details or create an account add payment details etc...
Sign in purchase download and follow install processes to upgrade to 10.8 Mountain Lion.
OH and to be safe BEFORE you install backup your current system to an external drive ! -

I run 10.8 on my MacBook pro and need 10.8 to run the xcode 5 dev tools on my work mac... I thought it would be a simple download, didn't realise we'd have to pay? Frankly the differences are in no way deserving of any price tag!

I recently purchased an iPod Classic but it won't operate from my system (Which is lame!) ... I was considering updating from Panther to Tiger or Leopard (they seem to be the same price) ... I've read many posts about the new Leopard's bugs etc., also I'm about to start doing some pre production (music) from home using Pro-Tools --- And I read on the digi design site that Leopard is not compatible with their system as of yet ...After reading the post I'm leaning towards not getting Leopard until Apple works out the kinks - Now Tiger ... on the iPod Classic box it requires Mac OSX 10.4.8 (which I didn't see until I got home) --- It looks like on the apple site that Tiger runs 10.4.6 -- (***??) Note that the stated System Requirements for any version of OS X, are the bare Minimum.
As roam posted, once an OS has been installed, the point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), 10.4.x to 10.4.11 (Pending), and 10.5.x to 10.5.1 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
If your Mac meets the Leopard System Requirements. Leopard 10.5.x, can be purchased at The Apple Store (U.S.).
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased, sometimes less expensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, HardCore Mac, AllMac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
The discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

To install firmware updates in your Mac, OS X copies the firmware to the EFI partition (a small partition at the start of the drive), and they are installed the next time your Mac starts up. This means that your USB drive with OS X Mavericks must be formatted in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" and have a GUID partition table. With this, all firmware updates will be installed to your computer. -

I have thee Mac computers with Mac OS 10.6.8, one of which is a Mac Pro. No matter how many updates I install from Adobe, their Flash Player does not work on any of these 3 computers. I don't know how to contact Adobe Systems about this problem, but I think it is their responsibility to make sure that their so-called "universal" software works proplerly on a relatively recent operating system like OS 10.6.8 that is still in widespread use. When you install the updates, nothing happens -- not even an error message. What is the point of a universal player that is not universal? It works fine on my MacBook Pro with OS 9 Mavericks, but it does not work at all -- indeed, has never worked -- on my 3 Macs with OS 10.6.8. Has anyone contacted Adobe Systems to find out why the Flash Player does not work with OS 10.6.8 and what they plan to do about it?

If it still won't install, do these two things: First uninstall any Flash by going into the second level Hard Drive Library>Internet Plug-ins, and trash the Flash Player.plugin and flashplayer.xpt. Then boot into Safe Boot, Shift at the startup chime (give it much longer than a usual boot) and run the installer while booted in Safe Boot. -
