If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.0.1. For the iPad Mini the iOS is 6.0.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are at iOS 4.3.3 as your info above states, you cannot perform an OTA (over the air) update since that feature was introduced with iOS 5 (which you do not have on your device).
As Rudegar above mentioned, connect the iPad to your PC running the newest version of iTunes and update it that way. You update path is direct to iOS 7.0.3 (the newest as of now). You cannot update to anything but the newest version.

If you are on iOS 5+ as your tagline suggests then you should have a Settings > General > Software Update on the iPad for direct update. If you are on iOS 4 (or you can do it this way if you are already on iOS 5) then you can only update by connecting to your computer's iTunes and, if not prompted, click the Check For Updates button the device's Summary tab.
Before you update you should copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases and force a backup.

I have the original iPad and can't figure out how to update IOS 5 or any others.
A first gen iPad can only be updated to iOS 5.1.1 (you can only update a device to the highest iOS version that it supports).
If it's already on iOS 5 then you should have a Settings > General > Software Update option on it for direct update on the iPad, if it's on iOS 4 or below then you can only update via your computer's iTunes.
To update via a computer, connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad via File > Devices > Back Up
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand sidebar of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button
