  • N9 cannot "calculate a route" without internet con...

Maps are downloaded on the device and working.  In "Drive" an internet connection is required to calculate the desired route.  What is that all about?

I am using internal GPS without assisted GPS (so no need for internet) - but app won't calc the route without internet connection - frustrating.  Now, I let it access the www at the start of navigation - then disconnect www, and all is well for the rest of the route.  I can't see why it needs the www to do the calc - surely the calc algorithm is included in the "Drive" app??  One would think so!  It seems to be using a server-based app to calc the route.

  • !Firmware update without internet connection

I want to upgrade my firmware version.Mine is N72.
But I don't have internet connection.
Is that possible to upgrade offline?
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks .

No it's not possible to update firmware without an internet connenction.
However you can visit a nokia care point and they will update it for you. It will be free if your phone is still under warranty (2 years in europe, 1 year elsewhere). If it's not under warranty it may still be free or they might be a small charge.

  • Route tracking with Ovi Maps without internet conn...

I have been trying to find an app, which would track my  route without connecting to the  internet. This is important in two cases: 1. when there is no service (in the mountains, for instance) 2. when it is prohibitively expensive (like abroad). It is great that I can download Ovi Maps for any location in the world, but I cannot really use it as every app that I know is trying to connect. I found one app, which came close, Parking 2. It does use Ove Maps and one would think that you can track back your car looking at the pre-loaded maps, but this is not the case. It still connects and then loads the maps (which are already pre-loaded on the phone!). And if there is no connection, there are no maps.
Does anyone know of a free or paid app, which can do exactly that: track your route based on the pre-loaded Ovi Maps without connecting to the net?
Thank you in advance for any info

@optiplex - I Understand where you are coming from. It sounds fairly simple. Unfortunately, the maps that ovi has for places like ladakh and other places in the Himalayas are fairly featureless. There are no contours on the map for where the terrain is mountainous. For instance, I have planned an expedition in the Tsomoriri - Peldo - Skarchyu sector. The Terrain ranges from 15000 ft to 22000 + ft. Straight line just aint gonna work. If the map were bit more detailed then I could actually set way points to the destination and then work one way point at a time. Unfortunately, while I am happy that the GPS on N8 works wonderfully well without GPRS/3G or any cellular network, the ovi maps are a let down, in that they are not very detailed. (not talking about cities and towns and not referring to drive navigation at all which according to me works beautifully.)

    1. OVI Maps and Sport Tracker does not need Internet connection if you did the setting correctly.
    2. Sport Tracker will record your trail. The trail can be shown on the Sport Tracker maps. The trail record can also be exported out as KML file and on the PC screen, display the trail on Google Earth.
Unfortunately, I don't think you can use the trail record to guide you back to your starting position while in the mountain.
So how about this method using OVI maps.
    1. Set your Walk navigation to "Straight Line" instead of "Street".
    2. Record your starting position as a Favorite on OVI Maps.
    3. Walk into the mountain.
    3. Use OVI Maps to navigate back to your starting position by selecting "Walk to". OVI maps will show how far and the built in compass will show you which direction is your starting position.
Not sure whether this is what you needed.

How do I update my Nokia N85 without a PC/Windows?

You can try the on device updater (see your user guide for details) but not all updates are released using that method.
The only other option without windows is to take your phone to a nokia care point.  If you are covered by a warranty the update will be free.

  • How to update without high speed access

How do I get system or other updates efficiently with a new iMac Intel Duo that only has access to 28.8 dial up internet access? The download time adds up to days. Is there a CD update we can get every 3-4 months or something like that? High speed has not come our area of rural Iowa.

    Hi GozerMonster!
Take a blank CD to an Apple retail store, and you will probably be able to download and burn updates there, on a demo Mac.
If you do not have an Apple retail store in your area, you can download any update, you may need, on any computer, and then burn to a CD for use on your Mac.
For a faster download, do you have a friend or relative with a high-speed connection?
Visit your local Public Library, they may offer access to computers with a high-speed connection.
Some bookstores & internet cafes have High-Speed connections. If you, a friend or relative, has a portable computer, so this may work for you.
    Good Luck!

  • How to AppleTV without internet?

I'm looking into buying an Apple TV for the wireless connection to my iPhone 4S to stream videos, games, etc.
But now I'm curious about all the downloaded videos I have on iTunes library that I would like to have at home.
Here's the kicker- no internet at home, only at work. So I usually download during the day, sync my phone and watch when I get home. But of course, I run out of room to keep everything I want even with 160GB iPhone (mostly music).
So here's the question: Is there a way  to move purchased movies from my computer at work to my Apple TV at home AND be able to do all the fun stuff like wirelessly play games on big screen from iPhone?

    AppleTV has no storage.
Unfortunately current models need internet to play protected iTunes content as internet authorisation of playback is needed.
If you have a computer at home you could transfer your downloads from the work machine to the home computer iTunes library.  You could then use Home Sharing for AppleTV to access the computer iTunes library.  You would then need a local network connection between AppleTV and computer plus internet access for AppleTV.
Potentially if your iPhone has internet you might be able to enable a wifi hotspot (or share internet via USB) for the computer, and either allow AppleTV to connect to iPhone too via wifi or share the computer internet (from iphone) over ethernet to AppleTV.  This should work in theory and provided playback is via AppleTV Computers icon the media should just play opver the LAN not the internet, but with iPhone internet used to very briefly authorise the playback.
While it should work I can't guarantee it, and there has also been a post where someone used their iPhone internet allowance quickly using Home Sharing even though such dats should be local not traversing the internet.
In all honesty, I would be wary without a router and decent internet.

  • Installing updates without internet

    Hi there,
I'm new to all of this, so please excuse my naivety on the subject. I own a powermac with Final Cut Studio. It is however, not connected to the internet, because my intention was to use it strictly for editting with no distractions (I have a laptop for using the net!). I have purchased the Apple Pro Training book 1 on Final Cut Studio, but the files on the included disk require me to have the latest version of Final Cut Pro (mine is currently 6.0)
I downloaded the pro applications update from this site on to my laptop (149 mb) and burned the DMG file to a cd, with the hope of installing it from there on to my mac. However, when I insert the disk, I am given the message "The disk you inserted is not readable by this computer." At first I thought it was a dodgy disk so I tried with a new one, but the same message appears.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Rob D

Some advice: you say there was a problem with your "vista settings", so I presume you are downloading your updates on a Windows machine.
Windows uses what is called a "flat file format" whereas the Mac uses a forked file format, split into a data fork and resource fork. There is a possibility that Windows will strip out the Resource fork, rendering your downloaded file useless on the Mac.
Using the Mac's built in Software Update function ensures that updates are delivered by a secure server connection and that they are installed in the correct order. There will be no risk of losing the resource fork and you will only have to restart once, when several updates are installed simultaneously.

  • How to update without Windows?

    Hi
I would like to update my e71 from firmware 200. to 400. - but I do not own a copy of Windows.
I have tried defining a server as detailed here http://www.nokia.co.uk/support/download-software/device-software-update/faq#faq17 but that does not seem to work - is this method still supported? I just get 'Operation Cancelled by the Server' both when I connect via the LAN or by 3g.
How do us non-Windows users update our phones, please?
    Thanks

Not many S60v3FP1 phones (such as the E71) support FOTA.
Even for phones that do support FOTA, it also depends on whether the firmware in question is released via that method. For example, V40 for the 5800 was released only by NSU in the UK while it was released via FOTA in Greece...

  • How to update without Adapter?

I bought my Ipod in America, it is a new 20gig color photo, but i didn't bother to bring the adapter for the wall with me for obvious reasons. It asked me if i wanted to update and i did, but then it says to plug it into the wall adapter, but i can't and it won't let me do anything till i plug it in, what to do?

You have to plug it into an AC adapter to finish the update.
Is there an Apple store nearby? Head over & plug your iPod in there. Or borrow someone's adapter:)

  • A wonder: online map browsing without Internet con...

Hi, my C5 phone is provided by father, who has family contract with mobile network and he assures me that the phone has no Internet connection. Yet, when I use the map service, I see the photo of the landscape appears gradually as 3.5G starts blinking and megabites dowloaded. I can navigate the whole word, with any resolution, as if I am in Google maps. I do not believe that everything is sored in the phone because travelling zillionth of the Earth surface already results in couple of megabytes "downloaded". What is the link and will it cost me a lot when I am abroad?
Migrate my question into more appropriate place. I feel like it applies to more than Cx phones.

I think your father is wrong and someone will get a surprise when the phone bill arrives. While it is possible to pre-download map data from Nokia Maps, this does not include satellite imagery which you can only stream. Cost when you are abroad depends on your operators roaming charges. Needless to say, it will be expensive.
