How to upgade from OS9 FCP to OSX FCP?!

Okay, so I've got an iMac G4 running OSX that I want to install FCP3 on (not enough RAM to run 4/HD). Trouble is, I have a Final Cut 2 installer for OS9, and the FCP3 upgrade installer is OSX, but it appears I have to start my path with FCP2 in OS9! Is there any way around this? Or do I actually have to re-initialize my machine, give it an OS9 partition, install FCP2 in OS9, and then upgrade to FCP3 in OSX?
Anyone?

256MB will hardly run v3, especially with Panther. You need more RAM.
You'd have to install OS9. Boot into OS9. Install v2. Initialize. Install OS X. Then run the upgrade.

  • Transferring data files from OS9.1 to OSX(10.4.7

I've done a lot of reading this evening and I am still unclear about transferring info from OS9.1 to OSX(10.4.7). Programs are not transferrable, but data files were not addressed directly. The platforms are the issue. My understanding is that Office:Mac 2004 and Quicken 2007 will translate data files from AppleWorks6 and Quicken 2000. I have data files on my iMacOS9.1, also backed up on an Acomdata external harddrive. Is there anything, or way, that I can get these files transferred to my new iMac20"(10.4.7)machine? From what I'm reading, FireWire target disk mode holds some faint hope. I'm concerned that if I access the external harddrive, it may require a re-initializing, even though it was originally partitioned to receive both PC and Apple OS files.

Continuing trial and error. My old Imation Floppy Drive worked well to transfer Quicken files across from OS9.1 to OSX(10.4.7). The new iMac apparently had the necessary driver, because everything came to life when I hooked into the USB2.0 port. At 1.4m it's slow. Probably the same success can be accomplished by CD's and probably the same with the Fire Wire Target Disk Mode, if you are careful about the material you try to transfer. In the case of Quicken, when the file was transferred, a dialog box came up giving a recommended procedure to follow. Easy!

  • How can I transfer 2GB files from OS9 machine to OSX machine ??

So I need to transfer MPEG video files greater than 2GB in size from my encoding system to my file server. Encoding system cannot run OSX, so is currently running OS 9.2.2, but file server is running OS 10.4 (NOT OS Server, just regular OS). What is the best approach to this? FTP through network? Is there an utility that will take Apple Talk out of the picture?
Much Thanks to whomever can help!

If you have Ethernet cabling, you can use Apple File Sharing. In older Mac OS, the software is installed automatically when an Ethernet interface is detected at install time.
Although 10.4 and later are not willing to share using AppleTalk, 10.4 and later are certainly willing to share using IP, which has been available since AppleShare Chooser extension v 3.7 (readily useable in OS 7.5.3).
Starting from the older Mac, use the "Server IP Address" button that appears when AppleShare is selected in the Chooser, and enter the IP Address of the more modern Mac. \[If your older Mac is running OS 9 or uses ShareWay IP, you can start from either Mac]
A dialog appears requiring you to enter the Username and Password for the Mac whose files you will be accessing in order to share its Files or Folders. The items being shared are then mounted on the Desktop of the Mac originating the request as "Network Drives" and can be fully manipulated with the Finder.

  • How to import from Adobe After efects to FCP?

Hi guys. I made a text sequence in Adobe After Effects, it is a "composition".
When I try to import it into a sequence in FCP it imports the sequence background from AE and therefor does not overlay the text over my clip but rather blocks out my clip with the AE Background.
What am I dong wrong? How do I make text in AE then overlay it in a squence in FCP?

In the Render Queue click on the name of the output module.
Under the Video Output section choose *RGB + Alpha* from the Channels menu
Then from the Color menu choose *Straight (Unmatted)*

  • How many versions of os9.1 is osx supposed to have?

Is my G3 supposed to have two versions of OS 9? Running classic brings up a previous system and another system I installed, because of trouble getting on a wireless network at home. Disk repair always repairs two rrwww..twi uid files..etc. Also is DiskWarrior the best to repair and remount my Lacie 250 external harddrive? Is there a PCI card to maintain a connection to a windows wireless network? I also live near a powerful radio tower. This causes my connection to run slow and drop.
    Thanks for your help.

    Welcome to the Discussions.
DiskWarrior has such a good reputation that it is in danger of being thought to be what it is not, and then to be blamed for not doing what it is not designed to do. Alsoft's DW is a file utility, not a disk utility like ATTO's, FWB's, Intech's and La Cie's.
DW does not even touch the logical structures of a HDD. Its business is solely with file organization on the volume that you see on the desktop, which is only the visible one of several partitions on a drive. DW works wondrous well at creating an entirely new file directory from scratch (ie it does not attempt to 'repair' a corrupt file directory), and, only after doing this, it can also repair the boot blocks (pointers to the blest System Folder) on one of the invisible partitions. DW, in fact, cannot work at all if the partitioning of your drive is corrupt. DW has no capacity to reinstall or replace the hard disk's driver.
Disk utilities, by contrast, are concerned to erase, format, partition and polish your drive's invisible logical structures, and to install a driver. Some of them may spare a passing glance at your data in the visible partition, but disk utilities are not primarily concerned with what is stored on a disk so much as with how and where it is stored. Their finest work of preparation or drive rescue (except for driver installation) usually results in total loss of all data.
In the light of all this you will see that DW is something to use to attend to your stored data after you have repaired and mounted your LaCie drive with Apple's Drive Setup, or better, LaCie's Silverlining v6.5.4 (which includes a FireWire bridge update). v6.5.1 should have come with the drive (on CD), and the updater 6.5.4 is downloadable. Your stored data will survive installation of a disk driver or new bridge firmware. They will be totally destroyed by reformatting/repartitioning the drive. The distinctions are important.

  • How to upgade from gt 120 to newer video card.

    Hi,
I have a Macpro 4,1 with sx 2.26 quad core proccessors, 10 gb of memory and a Gt 120 that seems to be dieing. I understand that with the 10.8.3 updates and beyond apple has added support for many new graphics cards. I was wondering if there were any besides the ones sold by apple that would work in my mac as a plug and play upgrade. I want to get something to play some newer games as well as do video editting but not something that will break the bank. I was speciffically looking into the xfx Radeon HD 7850. I am should also note that i need something that can also drive a 50 inch 1080p display as that is what I am using as a monitor. I was hoping to get help from people here as I am fairly new to macs in terms of upgrading hardware.
    Thank You,
    Steve

1080p display is a cinch. Anything can do that.
For older Macs, the Apple-firmware 5770 , about US$250, is the recommended card, but yours can drive a faster card.
Anything that is not a "Mac Edition" or specifically says EFI-firmware comes with a caveat:
does not show Startup screens, Installer screens, Debug screens, or Alt-Boot screens -- at all, ever.
In addition, some cards available today require an 8-pin aux cable or an 8-pin Plus a 6-pin (your Mac has two 6-pin Aux connectors only)

  • Upgrading a iMac G3 from OS9.2 to OSX. Firmware upgrade problem.

I am having trouble updating the firmware on my iMac G3 400mhz computer. I am running 9.2 but there seems to be a sleep problem. The computer shuts off, after holding the programmer's button, during start up. So, the 4.1.1 update doesn't take. As well as when trying to start the system up fresh the screen stays black and only when I manually innitiate sleep and start up again does the screen come back on. I am at a loss.

Now, here is what I did from the very beginning.
I replaced the battery, set the power management button, booted up the computer, the computer starts up in sleep mode ( Screen is off and won't come back on till I manually press the power button to put the system to sleep. I then press it again to wake it up, only then will the screen come back on). I then shut down the system to install the firmwarre update. I held down the programmers button, system tones then the computer shuts down before starting up. I then start it up again and the computer tones 2 times as if it were resetting the PRAM. After start up a message sayes that the firmware was not installed.
    I am getting rather confused.

  • Can you access files on OSX system from OS9 system on the same iMac?

The apple software updater was updating my OSX4.6 to 4.8 but there was not enough disk space so when the window that told me that appeared I just clicked on shutdown. When I try to start my iMac again all I get is the Apple Logo screen with the animated wheel. So I am assuming that the OSX updating screwed up my OSX's ability to boot. Ok - so I thought I would reinstall my original Tiger software but I do not have enough hard disk space to do that. So I booted to OS9 which is still on my iMac and removed what files that I could, but still not enough free space. From OS9 I do not see any of the files that I have on the OSX desktop so that I can delete some of them. Is there some way for me to access the OSX hard disk or desktop files from OS9?
    Bruce

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Any files on your OS X desktop are OK to delete, but not the desktop folder itself. That desktop folder is found in your Users -> yourname folder.
    See my FAQ On http://www.macmaps.com/safetodeleteormove.html
to understand how Mac OS X is structured, so you don't delete something by accident.
Free up at least 15% of the hard disk before attempting to boot back into Mac OS X. This amount is arbitrary, but has been found to be the best amount of space to use Mac OS X in.

  • From G3 OS9 to Intel OSX

I'm helping my older uncle, an OS 9 power user, get a new computer.
He understands lots of things about computers, but there are many themes and ideas that he doesn't get, so consider him a newbie. He says he doesn't learn well hands on, but likes reading books (books by Pouge being his favourite).
    He has:
G3 iBook (I think it's the white dual USB version with the clear keys) with OS 9
    Switching too:
    Macbook Pro
I only breifly used OS 9, so I need a little help too.
    Here's what I need:
-He's an Office 98 for Mac user, we need a good book on the 2004 Office. He uses Powerpoint a lot!
-How to get his old files to his new computer (Migration + Firewire?)
-Would we need a file converter to use his old powerpoint/word/excel files to the new 2004 office, or will they just open regularly.
-He uses the OS 9 version of Outlook, is there a way to backup his settings and use them in Mail or Entourage?
A lot of the books I had found on switching from OS 9, were switching to 10.1 or 10.2, which would be iffy on helping him. Is there an online resource for switching to tiger directly?

About switching up to OSX. You say books switching to OSX.1 etc are iffy. Look under Mac OS X Tiger: Missing Manual by David Pogue on Amazon.com and there are secondhand ones from $13.98. There is a chapter on where the things you miss in OS 9 have gone, and what has replaced them. That is extremely useful.
Another tip for switching up from OS9 to OSX. I would recommend downloading the free hotkeys application Spark from Versiontracker at http://versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/22675
If you are like me then one of the things you might sorely miss at first in switching to OS X is the OS 9 function keys by which you could configure a function key to load an application with the press of one key. With Spark you can do just that for applications and documents. So if you configure separate function keys for your mail application, browser and eg Word, then that will give you a core basic way of getting on with your daily work while still learning all the ins and outs of OSX, which will take a while.
The good news is that even coming this late to OSX it is very worth it and will become second nature. I'm 18 months out of OS9 and now can hardly even remember what different things were called in that system.

  • How can I transfer my photobooks from iphoto 08 on osx 10.5.8 to iphoto 11 on macbook osx 10.8.1 without loosing layout?

How can I transfer my photobooks from iphoto 08 on osx 10.5.8 to iphoto 11 on macbook osx 10.8.1 without loosing layout? I prepared 3 books in iphoto 08  and wanted to order them yesterday. I got the message, that this version is not supported anymore. I also have a macbook osx 10.8.1. However I did not manage to transfer the books to it. What can I do? I really would not like to recreate the books from scratch in th new version.

You will have to convert your 08 library to iPhoto 11 by copying the library to your Macbook and opening it with iPhoto 11.
However, check to see if the theme you're using in 08 is available in 11.  If it isn't you'll probably lose the book or be assigned to some other theme.
If the theme you've chosen isn't available in 11 find one that is available in both versions and convert to it in the 08 library before you move it to 11.

  • How to go from mac oxs 10.5.8 to mac osx 10.6.8

I bought an Iphone 5 and i can't use itune because I need a newer version but I can't have it because I don't have osx 10.6.8... where do I find it ?

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
