How to upgrade 10.5.8 to yosemite

I have Mac Mini with 10.5.8. I want to upgrade the OS - not sure how to, or if my Mini can cope with Yosemite. How do I find out? Thanks.

You would first need to update to 10.6.8 so you can access the App Store. System requirements can be found at the link below.

  • How to upgrade MB Pro Lion to Yosemite

Looking for some "how to" advice on upgrading software from(Late Year 2011) 15" Mac Book Pro Lion 10.7.5 to newer Yosemite OS X.    I'd also like to remove  all old non-working Power PC Apps and any other junk, bugs or viruses it might have.   Looking forward to anyones opinions or recommendations on these upgrades.  Thanks H.

First check and see if your machine is in the recall pool:
    Apple Recall:"
    https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/
It will help us to know how much RAM is installed. I would say you'd need at least 8 GB to be effective.
I personally have avoided Yosemite, read a lot of posts here and on the Yosemite site. I'm still running Mavericks and Lion.
You might also consider upgrading your HD to an SSD:
    https://www.macsales.com/
Is the vendor of choice for me.
If you're set on Yosemite the site is here:
    https://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/
Make a working clone of your current OS before you do anything.
You might do a clean install of Lion and migrate just the applications you want.
"any other junk, bugs or viruses it might have."
If you don't feel it's running up to spec check out the serial number on the recall site.

How do I get iphoto to upgrade photo library after upgrading os from snowleopard to yosemite?

    To add to OT's advice:
You may need to delete your current iPhoto from the Applications folder, if it is a version of iPhoto '11, before the App Store will allow you to download it from the main page.
To locate iPhoto at the AppStore, open the "Featured" tab and enter "iPhoto" into the search field.

  • How to upgrade from os x 10.6.8 to Lion os 10.7.2

How to upgrade from os x 10.6.8 to Lion os 10.7.2?

Open the Mac App Store and try downloading Yosemite. If you get told it's incompatible, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.
Unless you previously got an installer for Mac OS X 10.7 through 10.7.2, you can only upgrade to a newer version.

  • How to upgrade SAFARI in OS X 10.6.8

How to upgrade SAFARI in OSX 10.6.8

    Yosemite works fine for me.
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) model number 5,1 or higher
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won’t have to go though the revert process.
Check to make sure your applications are compatible.

Or you can try Mountain Lion.

  • Just upgraded my 2014 iMac to yosemite. Now my Bose sound link won't work. The bluetooth is connected and it beeps as normal, just no sound comes from the speaker. This is very frustrating (along with the now flat rather than 3D icons on the desktop)

I have just upgraded my 2014 iMac to YOSEMITE. Now my Bose Soundlink bluetooth speaker connects, beeps as normal, but produces no sound from the Bose speaker whatsoever. HELP PLEASE

I have now recently downloaded 10.0.2 which is confusing in itself, as, as far as I can ascertain that is actually version 11, but I'm not even sure about that.
Version 10.0.2 is the newest version and the successor to GarageBand '11 (version 6.0.5).
The '11 is referring to the iLife '11 suit of multimedia application - the older GarageBand was a part of this bundle.
Have a look at Edgar's graphical enhanced manuals, the explain very detailed how things work and why. You can buy them as iBooks from the iBook store or directly from the page:

Help.....Adobe Photoshop CS5 does not load now that I upgraded my MacPro to yosemite....anybody have this problem and how was it fixed?

Yes. The Yosemite upgrade is notorious for damaging CS5 installs. Please reinstall and let us know how it goes.
Also make sure Yosemite is upgraded to 10.10.1
The reinstall will set your instal to 12.0.0  If Help > Updates does not work, go here Adobe - Photoshop : For Macintosh
download and apply the updates for Photoshop and Adobe Camera Raw.

    Nope. http://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT204144
Even that limited list in the Apple support article is incorrect. It says any of those can AirDrop with "a Mac with OS X Yosemite". That is wrong. You are the one that is correct about the Mac support, not Apple.
Ahh, yes. I was going by this, http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/, but I didn't see the Lightning connector.

  • Can I upgrade this OS X to Yosemite when it comes out

ccan I upgrade OS X Mavericks to Yosemite when it comes out

Yosemite will be a free upgrade when it is released but older Macs may not be able to run it. For example the first generation MacBook Air cannot run it.
If you do the following we can check which model you have and tell you whether yours can run it.
Go to the Apple menu and select "About this Mac" - How much memory does it say, and what is the current OS X version?
Now twice on the OS X version number, it should then show the serial number, what is it?
You can now use that serial number at this website - http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/ it will tell you the model of Mac you have, and if you open the detailed information for that model and scroll down it will tell you what versions of OS X it is capable of running.
As mentioned the first (original) MacBook Air model the macbookair1,1 cannot run Yosemite, or Mavericks, or Mountain Lion, it can only run up to Lion. Later models including the macbookair2,1 can run Yosemite, Mavericks and Mountain Lion.
With regards to memory, you cannot upgrade the memory and it will have come with at least 2GB as standard. This is enough to run Yosemite but if you had 4 or even 8 it would be much better. Therefore even if you have a model that is compatible with Yosemite - if it only has 2GB of RAM (which cannot be upgraded on the MacBook Air) you might want to think about selling it and getting a newer one with more memory.

  • Lost music from iTunes after upgrading MacBookPro to OS X Yosemite

Lost music from iTunes after upgrading MacBookPro to OS X Yosemite. Has anyone had this problem? How did you re-import all your lost music? My iTunes currently only contains all of the music I have purchased from the iTunes Store but nothing that was burned to my iTunes. All of my music files still seem to be located on my hard drive within the iTunes folder but they did not re-import into the library during the upgrade to Yosemite. Thanx for your help.

    Hi OrangeOAK,
Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, you still have the music on the computer but need to re add it to iTunes. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you isolate or resolve the issue.
Adding music and other content to iTunes - Apple Support
Adding content on your computer to iTunes
iTunes helps you add digital audio and video files on your computer directly to your iTunes library. You can add audio files that are in AAC, MP3, WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless, or Audible.com (.aa) format. If you have unprotected WMA content, iTunes for Windows can convert these files to one of these formats. You can also add video content in QuickTime or MPEG-4 format to iTunes. To learn how to add these files to iTunes follow the steps below.
    Open iTunes
From the File menu, choose one of the following choices:
    MacAdd to Library
    Windows
    Add File to Library
    Add Folder to Library
Navigate to and select the file or folder that you want to add
If iTunes is set to "Copy files to the iTunes Music folder when adding to library," iTunes will copy all content that is added to the iTunes library to the iTunes Music folder. To adjust this setting or change the location of this folder, go to the Advanced tab in iTunes Preferences.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Have a great day,
    Mario

  • How do you stop download of OS Yosemite. From BOwa1

How do you stop download of OS Yosemite. I started the download but changed my mind. can i stop the download or remove the upgrade after download.
    Thank You,

I don't know of a way to stop the download, but when it finishes it will run automatically. Simply quit the installer. You can then delete it from the Applications folder like any other file.

  • How to upgrade Pages with a redemption code

I am not sure where and how to upgrade Pages using a redemption code given to me by Apple, as an old coworker's ID is stuck as the original purchaser for the program and cannot be changed. I was issued an exception/redemption code but I don't know how to use it, whenever I click update it just brings me to the same box with his ID asking for the password we don't know. Please help! Pages will no longer allow me to open and use my work documents. iMac has been upgraded to Yosemite. Thanks!

If you have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac:
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5/5.01 can not open Pages 5.1 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.1 sometimes can not open its own files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.5.1 only runs on Yosemite and has yet another file format.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has not only managed to confuse all its users, but also itself.
Note: Apple has removed over 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:
Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.
